* New Pooh to view: Here’s a reason to celebrate: "In August, Dutton will publish Return to the Hundred Acre Wood, the first authorized sequel to the Winnie-the-Pooh books in years. The author is David Benedictus, who finally prevailed upon A.A. Milne’s estate to let him write a book. ‘We thought David had a wonderful feel for the material,” a Pooh trustee tells The Wall Street Journal. “No doubt some will say it’s not as good as the original, but it’s very good, and we’re pleased with it.’ " Call it a hunch, but I’ll bet that book isn’t cut in the publishing downturn. (Via The Daily Beast.)

* Space And Time magazine has updated their website.

* If Norse legends are good enough for Neil Gaiman, they’re good enough for J.R.R. Tolkien. HarperCollins has bought the rights to an unpublished work written before The Hobbit, The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrún, edited and introduced by Tolkien’s son Christopher. The work, written when Tolkien was professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford University during the ’20s and ’30s, makes available for the first time the author’s extensive retelling in English narrative verse of the epic Norse tales of Sigurd the Völsung and the Fall of the Niflungs. The book is expected for May 2010.

* Barnes & Noble’s holiday sales dropped, though not as badly as expected.

* J. Steven York on the coming publishing apocalypse and electronic saviors.

* Disneyland Shanghai? "Walt Disney Co said today it’s going to submit a joint application report with the Shanghai government to China’s central government to build a new theme park. The company was responding to a Wall Street Journal report saying the joint venture is for a $3.59 billion Shanghai Disneyland to open in 2014 with Disney taking a 43% stake while a holding company owned by the local government keeping 57%."

LONE JUSTICE: CRASH! is the new graphic novel from the Harvey Award nominated team of Robert Tinnell and Mark Wheatley.  It will begin right here on ComicMix on Monday, January 12th.  And in the interest of making all things EZ, we present the top 6 essential things you should know before you start reading:

1) LONE JUSTICE: CRASH! is a two-fisted, pulp adventure set in the year 1930, just after the big Wall Street crash in 1929.  It is a time when there is great uncertainty in life, work and politics.  But it was also a time when pulp magazines were introducing vital new characters to the public that we would eventually come to call Super Heroes.  So, step aside, Doc Savage, the Shadow, and the Spider – and make way for Lone Justice!

2) LONE JUSTICE: CRASH! is the sideways sequel to the Harvey Award nominated EZ STREET graphic novel, also perpetrated by the Tinnell and Wheatley team. Why sideways? In EZ STREET, the central characters Scott and Danny Fletcher are attempting to create a graphic novel.  And LONE JUSTICE: CRASH! is the graphic novel they create.

3) Yes, that means Tinnell and Wheatley are taking credit for the work of two fictional characters.  They have no shame.

4) Maybe you don’t need to know that the core ideas behind Lone Justice’s tribulations in CRASH! can be found in the pages of EZ STREET – particularly in the character of the homeless man young Scott and Danny befriended.  But if you are aware it just might make the reading experience a little richer.  No, really – there are parallels to life events in EZ STREET all through LONE JUSTICE: CRASH!

5) You should probably be aware of just how devastating the Depression was on the United States and its residents.  It was much worse than what is going on today, so far.  Tent cities – known as Hoovervilles (after President Herbert Hoover) really existed.  Hopefully, there will not be any Bushvilles before LONE JUSTICE: CRASH! finishes running on ComicMix.

6) There were often official efforts to keep transient homeless folks out of cities and towns and even entire states.  These were people who were just trying to survive.  But California, for example, would try to keep people from pouring into the state – and they were prone to use force.

Rob Zombie has, not surprisingly, signed on direct a sequel to his remake of John Carpenter’s Halloween. He and Dimension Films have stressed this will not be a remake of Halloween 2. 

Production is gearing up so H2 can be shot starting in March and readied for release in October according to Variety.

“The new film picks up right as the first remake ended, following the aftermath of Michael Myers’ murderous rampage through the eyes of the sister he hunted,” said the trade.

Zombie initially told the studio that he wasn’t interested in coming back, despite the remake’s $60 million haul last year.

"I was so burned out. (But) I took a long break, made a record and I got excited again," Zombie said. "Now, we’ll be hauling ass, and that’s the problem making a movie called Halloween‘ If you come out Nov. 1 or after, nobody cares. If it was called anything else, I’d be fine."

Zombie is also at work on other films incluiding the animated film The Haunted World of El Superbeasto, based upon his comic book series, The Adventures of El Superbeasto. He’s also directing the live action Rob Zombie’s Tyrannosaurus Rex for Dimension.

This week, in a desperate attempt to disguise the fact that he doesn’t have any coherent way to tie the reviewed books together, Andrew Wheeler will adopt a “countdown” format to write about three brand-new Manga volumes.

Adding to the difficulty level: he will also write about himself in the third person, for no good reason.

Kaze no Hana, Vol. 3

This is the end of “Book One” of Kaze no Hana, in which not nearly enough is wrapped up and hardly any indication is given that the series will continue on to a “Book Two” sometime, somewhere. (For those who are lost: reviews of Volume One and Volume Two.)

To recap briefly: Momoka Futami is yet another typical cute Japanese teenage girl, who just wants to live a normal life. But she’s actually part of a family that has spent the past few hundred years defending the world against the minions of an evil god that was trapped under a mountain, using eight “spiritual swords.” There’s also an opposed group that wants to free the evil god – they don’t seem to consider him evil, actually – and they use “sacred swords,” which are totally different in a way that’s never been clear.

Kaze no Hana has a fairly large cast of people with vestigial (at best) noses, and it’s difficult to tell them apart much of the time. This book also has a lot of talking and emoting rather than fighting monsters, though one character does turn out, unexpectedly, to be a werewolf. There’s also a huge plot problem that gets resolved exceptionally quickly, leading this reader to wonder if perhaps the original serialization of this story was hurried to a conclusion quicker than the creators had planned.

Iron Man 2 screenwriter Justin Theroux told MTV’s Splash Page that the Entertainment Weekly reports as to why Terrence Howard was dropped from the cast in favor of Don Cheadle were not entirely accurate.

“I can’t really speak to the plot stuff and all the rest of it but Rhodes is completely present in a very strong and big way,” Theroux said Tony Stark’s friend and the future War Machine. “He’s completely present.”

“All that stuff that was in the EW article,” said Theroux regarding statements Howard was being dropped when the story being crafted minimized Rhodey’s role,. “I don’t know. I can only tell you what I know which is that from a writing standpoint we didn’t do anything differently [with the character]. It’s not like we were sitting there going, we need less of this or that. We just approached the characters and the story on their own terms.”

Meantime, Spoiler TV found some casting sheets for parts in the sequel which is set to shoot in April 2009 for a May 2010 release.

Just the other day we were talking about Universal seeking ideas for a third Nutty Professor film.  Now, Genius Products has announced the release of animated The Nutty Professor on DVD next Tuesday.

Tyler Mane (Mission: Impossible) will return as the deadly Michael Myers in a sequel to Rob Zombie’s Halloween, itself a remake of John Carpenter’s 1978 classic. Filming will begin in March with the release expected for next Halloween and others from the 2007 cast are expected back.

Smokin’ Aces : Blowback, a sequel to Smokin’ Aces, from director Joe Carnahan, will be a direct-to-DVD production, according to Moviehole. Carnahan’s blog indicates some of the original cast will be back.

Speaking of unnecessary films, Albert S. Ruddy spoke with Cannonball Run Pit Stop about a slew of projects including a remake of Megaforce, perhaps best known as the only other film Persis Khambatta made after Star Trek: The Motion Picture. He claims the South Park team of Matt Parker and Trey Stone have asked him about rights for a remake.

Ruddy wants to remake the celebrity filled disaster Cannonball Ball saying, ”We’d like to do another one, but the rights get very convoluted as you can imagine. Raymond Chow sold his library to 20th-Century Fox for a fortune, so getting a chain of title is a lot more complex than it used to be. If we can work it all out, than we can do another one.” Complete with Burt Reynolds, he promises.

Ruddy says he’s at work with Jet Li on something called Raging Fury, a film not yet listed at IMDb.

Ruddy and Clint Eastwood will reteam for the first time since Million Dollar Baby and make Remembering Mark Twain.  Eastwood is said to be ready to direct the film in 2009 and play the elderly Twain in bookend scenes. “It’s a really sweet, beautiful movie. So that’s what I’m all about!” During Eastwood’s publicity for his current film, Changeling, this has not come up.

There’s a lot of prequel/sequel talk in the air this week.  First, rumors have it that Jennifer Aniston is being offered tons of cash to reprise her character in a follow-up to The Break-Up, opposite Vince Vaughn.

On the other hand, Corey Haim says he’s up for a Lost Boys film; one he claims will be a prequel to the first film and not a follow-up to the direct-to-DVD sequel that was released in July. He told Bloody Disgusting, “I’ve seen the whole movie; I don’t like it, to be honest with you. I don’t like it, I’m not gonna lie to you. I don’t like it as much as the first one.”

No official word has come from Warner Bros. or any of the Lost Boys participants so Haim could be drumming up work for himself. Still, he clearly had his own vision of how the next film should be done. “[The] direction [will be] more so like the first one…" Haim described. "As far as I heard, it will be thrown back into the proper genre it was when Joel [Schumacher] executed it.”

Warner Bros. announced yesterday that they have signed a three-year first-look deal with The Office’s Steve Carell. The deal, according to Variety, has led to the formation of Carousel Productions to be overseen by Vance DeGeneres and Charlie Hartsock.

The new deal does not guarantee a sequel to the television spin-off, but given its $230 million success around the world, the gears have started to turn.  Anne Hathaway, his co-star, already told the press she was up for a second film.

"My idea was to partner with friends of mine, people I trusted, with whom I share a certain sensibility," Carell told Variety. "I have some ideas for films, but I’ve gotten to know so many people who are funny, talented and fertile with ideas that I’m confident this very strong base of friendships will lead to projects."

After the fifth season of the NBC hit, he will co-star with Tina Fey as spouses in Date Night for 20th Century-Fox and director Shawn Levy.
