ComicMix Six: Original Star Trek Backstory

The new Star Trek movie is in theaters, introducing the characters to new fans and surprising old fans. As anyone who’s read a single review, interview or promotional piece is aware of, this movie features some alterations to Trek‘s past thanks to a little time travel manipulation.

But what about the original past and backstory? What did the original series establish when it went on the air?

Here then are a list of six stories from the television series that filled us in on just who these folks were before they joined the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701.

‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’ release date changed again

Movesto datum releasum!

The release date for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is on the move again as Warner Bros. has shifted the HP6 release date to Wednesday, July 15, 2009 from Friday, July 17. The move should please those of you who have already waited an extra 8+ months for the movie, which had originally been set to release in November 21, 2008.

The new Wednesday release date for HP6 shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, given that Warner Bros. released Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix on Wednesday, July 11, 2007.

Warner Bros. reveals DC-themed mural on the backlot

Last Tuesday, Warner Bros. Animation unveiled its new cartoon billboard (the first new one in 15 years) at an event hosted by Mario Lopez on the Warner Bros. Studios lot.

This is actually a pretty big deal in Hollywood politics, and signals just how important the stable of DC characters are to Warner Bros. and their future.

The event was well attended. From left to right: Sam Register (Executive Vice President, Creative Affairs, Warner Bros. Animation), Warner Bros. Television President Peter Roth, “Teen Titans” producer Glen Murakami, “Batman: The Brave and the Bold” producer James Tucker, Julie Newmar (Catwoman from original “Batman” TV series), legendary animation producer Bruce Timm, Diedrich Bader (voice of Batman in “Batman: The Brave and the Bold”) and voice director Andrea Romano.

Jonah Keel has more information over at Collider, including interviews.

Wanted: Game developers for ‘Batman: The Brave and the Bold’

Wanted: Game developers for ‘Batman: The Brave and the Bold’

Finally, we can post a listing where someone can make money.

Warner Bros. Animation and Mochi Media, in partnership with DC Comics, are asking developers to submit ideas for a new Flash game (the programming language, not necessarily the character) based on the Cartoon Network series Batman: The Brave and the Bold, produced by Warner Bros. Animation. The game would be developed and produced for KidsWB.com, the premium, ad-supported destination from Warner Bros. Television Group. Game developers can submit their game design ideas, mockups and game portfolios now through March 27 for evaluation by professionals at Warner Bros. Animation, Mochi Media and DC Comics.

Ten finalists will be chosen and then allowed two months to further develop their Flash game concepts and the finished games will be featured on KidsWB.com this June. All ten finalists will be awarded cash prizes with the top developer receiving $9,000 and a contract for a second game valued at $15,000. Details and rules for the promotion can be found at  www.braveandtheboldcastingcall.com .

Kyle Piccolo watches the Watchmen

Kyle Piccolo watches the Watchmen

NY-based web producer For Your Imagination announced a major marketing deal with Warner Bros. theatrical arm to promote Watchmen. As part of the 6-figure deal FYI will integrate the movie into the storylines of a quartet of shows including Abigail’s Teen Diary, The Retributioners, HungrymanTV’s Phistophicles and the latest installment of Kyle Piccolo: Comic Shop Therapist. Take a look at the first of three new episodes:

Michael from FYI mentioned to us: "As part of our integrated sponsorship with Warner Brothers new film ‘Watchmen’ we have embedded easter eggs throughout the video that will lead viewers to more cool Watchmen content. The easter eggs, powered by Innovid, appear throughout the episode and are the beginning of what we think will be a revolution in terms of how we create video for the internet. Of course the show itself includes all sorts of Watchmen references and images too."

Batman sequel on hold until 2011

Batman sequel on hold until 2011

According to E! Online, a sequel to The Dark Knight is two years away. At least.

Director Christopher Nolan has inked a deal with Warner Bros. to helm Inception, based on his own screenplay. The sci-fi action film "set within the architecture of the mind" aims to begin shooting this summer and hit theaters in summer 2010, according to the studio.

This probably shouldn’t surprise anyone, though. It was three years between Batman Begins, and last year’s The Dark Knight. In between, Nolan made The Prestige, starring Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman as rival magicians.

The only potential problem, of course, is if they want to do another Terminator sequel for 2011, which would keep Bale’s schedule very filled and could conceivable dilute the impact of each film in theaters.

ComicMix Quick Picks – February 11, 2009

Today’s collection of items may not be worth a post of their own, but may be of interest:

  • An online Heath Ledger fan club has put up an online petition calling for Warner Brothers to withdraw the role of the Joker from Batman movies once and for all. They already have over 2,000 supporters "freaks." They’re also on YouTube, Facebook and Flickr.
  • The Battlestar Galactica prequel spinoff Caprica will be available on DVD and as a digital download on April 21 of this year but will not air until the show is ready to launch on SciFi– a full year later. Caprica, which will lay the groundwork for a 22-episode series scheduled to launch in 2010, is executive produced by BSG‘s Ronald D. Moore and David Eick and Remi Aubuchon (24) and stars Eric Stoltz, Esai Morales and Polly Walker.
  • Blambot presents the grammar of comic book lettering.
  • Danica McKellar (The Wonder Years, The West Wing) will become lead math correspondent for the weekly Science Channel series Brink, joining host Josh Zepps. Danica graduated summa cum laude from UCLA with a degree in mathematics, is co-author of a published proof, and wrote two math books for junior high girls, called Math Doesn’t Suck: How to Survive Middle-School Math and not Break a Nail and Kiss My Math.
  • The CW is collaborating with publisher Alloy Entertainment on a one-hour drama pilot adapted from the book series "The Vampire Diaries". Kevin Williamson (Scream) will write and executive produce, working alongside Julie Plec (Kyle XY). If the CW wanted vampires, why couldn’t they bring Buffy or Angel back?

Tomb Raider returning to the big screen?

Tomb Raider returning to the big screen?

Lara Croft may be returning to the big screen in a continuation of the Tomb Raider franchise. Warner Bros. and producer Dan Lin are in early development of a project with Ian Livingstone of gaming publisher Eidos as co-producer. No word if Angelina Jolie will return to the role of Ms. Croft, or if they’ll recast the part.

Tomb Raider has been licensed as a Top Cow comic since 1997.
