Seemingly minutes after Comic-Con International called it a wrap for 2010, Warner Bros.’ publicity machine cranked it into high gear and released four teaser posters for June 2011’s Green Lantern feature film. Our apologies for the delay in sharing them with you.

Of course, one of the con’s highlights was Ryan Reynolds’s encounter with a young fan, who asked about the oath. Apparently, hearing him solemnly recite the oath caused fainting, oohs, aaahs, and other orgasmic responses.

While some have quibbled over the still-in-the-works costume (personally, we hated the mask we saw on the Entertainment Weekly cover), what was shown to the packed room was well received.

Complete with some idiot in the audience with a vuvuzela, Warner Bros. showcased three upcoming new films in this Hall H presentation.

Green Lantern— Ryan Reynolds (Hal Jordan/Green Lantern), Blake Lively (Carol
Ferris), Peter Sarsgaard (Dr. Hector Hammond), Mark Strong (Sinestro), director Martin Campbell (Casino Royale, The Mask of Zorro) screenwriter Gerg Berlanti, and Geoff Johns (DC Chief Creative Officer and Green Lantern comic writer) all took a break from filming to show up and talk about the film, on a panel moderated by Geoff Boucher of the LA Times. A preview was shown, with Reynolds reciting the oath and the audience going nuts over it.

Reynolds was wearing a ring of his own, which he presented to an audience member. When asked about if it’s tough being married to a Marvel character (have they forgotten about Hannibal King and Deadpool? Maybe he converted…) he replied that “we probably have more comic books lying around then other married couples … although that might not be true for this crowd.”

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Not much here this time, just Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy) and some new footage. The audience was screaming for the footage, but left disappointed.

Sucker Punch — Zack Snyder returned to Comic-Con with his first non-adapted project, in a film that seems to be part Inception, part Tank Girl (moderator Boucher prefers “Alice in Wonderland meets One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest“).

He also brought a lot of the kick-ass actresses from the film, Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Carla Gugino, Jena Malone,
and Jamie Chung.

Kevin Kelly, liveblogging at G4 said of the shown footage: “Wow,
this movie looks like a fanboy’s wet dream: robots, giant mech suits
(that look very Big Daddy-ish), dragons, biplanes, samurai swords, hot
girls in sexy outfits …. But
it’s still hard to tell what it’s really about. A young girl gets
checked into a mental institute when she’s young … and enters some
sort of fantasy world.”

A new Looney Tunes television series is on the horizon, and the 80-year-old cartoon characters are getting another face lift. Jessica Borutski spent nearly two years redesigning the Looney Tunes characters for Warner Bros., saying, “I gave them slightly different proportions that
emphasize things I always
liked about the characters. An example is Bugs’ feet. I streamlined
them and made them bigger.” When the studio released the news about the upcoming cartoon series, along with promo art, many fans were in an uproar.

Borutski experienced a backlash of criticism and negativity towards her work. Many fans found the redesigns “desthpicable”, or as CartoonBrew.com put it, “embarrassing.” Although some people embraced the new style as being fun and more modern, the media’s attention has focused on the negative reactions to Borutski’s art. Pete Emslie, a freelance artist like Borutski and an admirer of her work, expressed his take on the situation in his blog: “If these designs were of brand new characters with no previous history
in cartoons, I believe that these images would be embraced by the
majority of animation fans and recognized for how appealing they are in
terms of graphic design and feeling of inner life and personality. The
problem of course is that these are the Looney Tunes characters, with a
long illustrious past… Most of us would rather that they not be
messed with…”

As has been unofficially discussed on the net, Warner Premiere continues to exploit DCE’s major heroes. The details on the next release were officially unveiled today in the following press release.

BURBANK, CA, (June 29, 2010) – To save an earthbound Kryptonian, the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight unite once again – this time to battle the powerful forces of Darkseid – in Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, the ninth entry in the popular, ongoing series of DC Universe Animated Original PG-13 Movies coming September 28, 2010 from Warner Premiere, DC Comics and Warner Bros. Animation. The highly anticipated, full-length film will be distributed by Warner Home Video as a Special Edition Blu-Ray™ and 2-Disc Special Edition DVD as well as single disc DVD. The film will also be available On Demand and for Download.

Fan favorites Tim Daly (Private Practice) and Kevin Conroy (China Beach) return to their seminal roles as Superman and Batman, respectively. The celebrity-laden guest cast is headed by Andre Braugher (Men of a Certain Age) as the daunting Darkseid. Sci-Fi heroine Summer Glau (Serenity/Firefly, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) provides the voice of Supergirl, and seven-time Emmy Award winner Ed Asner (Up) reprises his Superman: The Animated Series/Justice League role as Granny Goodness.

Based on the DC Comics series/graphic novel Superman/Batman: Supergirl by Jeph Loeb, Michael Turner & Peter Steigerwald, Superman/Batman: Apocalypse is produced by animation legend Bruce Timm and directed by Lauren Montgomery (Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths) from a script by Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Tab Murphy (Gorillas in the Mist).

After a spaceship splashes down in Gotham City Harbor, Batman and Superman encounter a mysterious Kryptonian with powers as great as those of the Man of Steel. The Kryptonian is soon revealed to be Kara, cousin of Superman, who takes her under his wing to educate her about the ways of Earth. However, the villainous Darkseid has other plans. Seeing an opportunity to finally defeat Superman, Darkseid abducts and gains control of Kara, utilizing the powerful Kryptonian to do his bidding. It’s up to Batman and Superman to save Kara, but they’ll have to take the fight to Darkseid within his hostile world – where unknown, deadly threats lurk around every corner, including a brainwashed Kryptonian able to match Superman blow-for-blow.

In addition to the feature film, the Superman/Batman: Apocalypse Special Edition Blu-Ray™ and 2-Disc Special Edition DVD include the third DC Showcase animated short, Green Arrow.  Screenwriter Greg Weisman’s story finds Oliver Queen at the Star City International Airport to pick up his girlfriend, only to be forced into action as Green Arrow to protect the 10-year-old Princess of Vlatava from his old nemesis Merlyn the Magnificent and the League of Assassins. The short features the voices of Neal McDonough (Desperate Housewives) and Malcolm McDowell (Entourage). Bruce Timm is executive producer.

Film Review – ALGENY: The Genetic Factor

On August 26, 2006, Green Glass Films began production on ALGENY: The Genetic Factor. Written and directed by Andrew Burroughs, this movie was inspired by Jeremy Rifkin’s book The Biotech Century . In that book, Rifkin coined the term “algeny”, when an organism upgrades its biology.

This led to the movie’s story about a young man named Justin (played by Alfred E. Rutherford), an orphan who is about to propose to his girlfriend and who has been getting shots for several years due to an illness he doesn’t understand. But Justin’s life changes when he realizes a man is following him one day. Very quickly, he discovers that he has never been ill, that his blood, in fact, has a perfect defense system that shields him from any disease. And unfortunately for him, a major pharmaceutical company knows about him and wants him dead before any number of cures and vaccines can be developed from his blood samples.

The movie has been screed at several film festivals since its completion and has won several awards. It was the winner for “HBO Best Feature Film” at the Martha’s Vineyard African-American Film Festival and winner of the Paul Robeson Award at the Newark Black Film Festival. It was the official selection at Berlin/Germany Black International Cinema and the American Black Film Festival.

‘Batman: Under the Red Hood’ Website goes Live

The official website is now live for Batman: Under the Red Hood, the next DC Universe Animated Original PG-13 Movies coming July 27, 2010 from Warner Premiere. The full-length Warner Bros. Animation film will be distributed by Warner Home Video.

The film’s trailer and 11 film images are now available for public viewing on the website. The website promises to be updated regularly with new images, video, cast information and contests.

Warner adds ‘Superman II’, ‘V’, ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ and More Genre Titles to DVD2Blu Program

Apparently, Warner Bros. has achieved success with their program of allowing people to upgrade from standard DVD to Blu-ray and has announced an expansion of the DVD2Blu program. The studio called our attention to the growing number of genre titles that ComicMix fans were most likely to be interested in exploring.

This program is a nice idea as is their Archive programming, effectively producing Disc on Demand offerings from their library. Now, if only they would offer some of those lost and forgotten films also in Blu-ray. Maybe in the future. In the meantime, here’s the press release:

Burbank, Calif., May 6, 2010 – Responding to the extraordinary growth of Blu-ray set-top hardware, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group has expanded its “DVD2Blu” upgrade program. Tony Stark isn’t just a cool exec with a heart of steel. He’s also the technological hero called Iron Man. And with Iron Man 2 coming out this Friday, we’re sure to see new suits of armor with cool improvements. Over the years, Tony has constantly redesigned and updated his armor. There’s been stealth armor, undersea armor, space armor, briefcase armor, armor that has horned face plates, armor with extended shoulder pads, etc., etc.

But some changes are not all they’re cracked up to be and perhaps should’ve been left on the drawing board. So let’s take a look at some of the silliest upgrades Iron Man has made to his famous armor.

We were teased with the next direct-to-DVD animated feature when Justice League came out a few months back. Personally, we never understood why Jason Todd was resurrected or why DC and Warner Home Video considered this story worthy of adaptation, but here is comes. What follows is the press release with the details:

We’ve just been informed that American anime producer and pioneer Carl Macek died Saturday of a heart attack. He was 58.

Carl created Robotech out of editing and redubbing three separate anime series Macross, Southern Cross, and Mospeada, co-founded Spumco with John Krickafalusi (Ren & Stimpy) and
co-founded Streamline Pictures (Akira, Vampire Hunter D, Fist of the North Star,
Laputa, My Neighbor Totoro) with Jerry Beck. Jerry remembers him here.

His history with comics was long-standing, as he directly wrote some of the Robotech comics for Comico, the books that pushed that company well into the black. Gerry Giovinco, publisher of Comico, has his own remembrance here. In later years, he was also responsible for the animated movie of the Chaos Comics character Lady Death, and had been working on translating episodes of Bleach and Naruto.

It could be argued that he was the most influential man in animation that never worked at Disney or Warner Brothers. He was a one of a kind guy, and will be missed.
