FLASH GORDON RETURNS AT DYNAMITE!

August 25th, 2011 – Runnemede, NJ – The iconic legend Flash Gordon is making his dynamic splash back into comics with Dynamite Entertainment this November!

Flash Gordon – Zeitgeist

As Flash Gordon’s story begins, it is a time of two-fisted swashbuckling, of fearsome threats and wild adventure-and of ever-growing threats on the horizon. Three valiant humans — Flash Gordon, Dale Arden and Dr. Hans Zarkov — are plucked from the Earth, traveling to the distant planet Mongo. Their exploits are legendary, battling the machinations and terror schemes of the dreaded emperor Ming, the All-Seeing Ruler of Mongo. But they did not fight alone! And coming up, witness a startling meeting with Ming the Merciless! With the fate of our world helpless, can even Flash Gordon save us?

Alex Ross had this to say about Flash Gordon – Zeitgeist, “Finally, after all this time, I’m working on a Flash Gordon series that brings the best I have to contribute to this legendary character and forerunner of all comic books!”

“I couldn’t be happier about this project,” stated writer Eric Trautmann. “It is a genuine treat to be able to let my inner ‘pulpster’ out, and write in an idiom I rarely get to play in, which has a rich core of optimism and innocence. We’re very much approaching the comic as if it were the Flash Gordon movie we’d all want to see. Add to that, I’ve adored Flash Gordon for as long as I’ve been reading, and the opportunity to play with Alex Raymond’s material — in a way I don’t think has been done before — is truly exciting. The Raymond strips were just so plot-dense, with a sense of ‘anything goes’ that I look for — often unsuccessfully — in contemporary comics. And, of course, several times a week, I check my e-mail, and find a dozen amazing pieces of artwork from Alex Ross; I’d be hard-pressed to find someone who has a greater understanding of the characters, or who harbors more affection for them, than Alex. He has laser-like clarity about the look and feel of the characters, the setting, the story, technology, making it all look new, and at the same time quite familiar. He’s an exceptional ‘vision holder’ for our tale.”

“Dynamite has added another classic character to our growing library of comics,” says Dynamite Entertainment President and Publisher Nick Barrucci. “Eric has put together an amazing story and all Flash Gordon fans will fall in love with this book, just as I have!”

DYNAMITE SNARES THE SPIDER!

Following up the announcement made on 8/17 that Dynamite Comics will be bringing the Pulp icon THE SHADOW back to comics, Dynamite announced today that fellow Pulp legend THE SPIDER will be joining the company’s growing cast of characters.

On board for Dynamite’s take on the millionaire turned somewhat horrifying hero will be writer David Liss, currently writing Marvel’s MYSTERY MEN mini series, artist Colton Worley and cover artists Alex Ross and John Cassaday.

Based on the art released thus far, Dynamite’s visual take on the character hews more toward how The Spider appeared in serials produced in the late 1930s and early 1940s by Columbia Pictures than how he has been portrayed in the original Pulps or in other comic adaptations, most recently that done by Moonstone Entertainment.

Who Knows What Evil Lurks? Dynamite Knows As It Picks Up “The Shadow”

the-shadow-alex-ross-cover-1-300x406-9798513Dynamite Entertainment has signed a comprehensive licensing agreement with Conde Nast for comic books based on The Shadow. Arguably the most famous pulp hero of the 20th century and an inspiration for Batman among many others, The Shadow has been featured in comic books, comic strips, television, video games, and at least five motion pictures.

“We are pleased and excited to entrust The Shadow to the capable, creative hands of Dynamite Entertainment,” said Jerry Birenz, licensing attorney for Conde Nast.  “We look forward to a continuation of the long tradition of The Shadow in comic books, and the enjoying of the new adventures and experiences Dynamite Entertainment will bring us.”

Introduced as a mysterious radio narrator by David Chrisman, William Sweets, and Harry Engman Charlot for Street and Smith Publications, The Shadow was fully developed and transformed into a pop culture icon by pulp writer Walter B. Gibson.

The Shadow debuted on July 31, 1930, as the mysterious narrator of the Street and Smith radio program Detective Story Hour.  After gaining popularity among the show’s listeners, the narrator became the star of The Shadow Magazine on April 1, 1931, a pulp series created and primarily written by the prolific Gibson.

“Pursuing The Shadow has been a life time quest,” says Dynamite Entertainment President and Publisher Nick Barrucci.  “Dynamite is working to launch the Shadow with some of the comic industries leading talent including John Cassaday, Alex Ross, Ryan Sook and Jae Lee, with more to be announced – creators who will bring justice to The Shadow.”

Just as with Dynamite’s pick up of The Green Hornet, this could also signal movement on a new Shadow movie. The Shadow was last seen on screen in 1994 in a film starring Alec Baldwin, Penelope Ann Miller, John Lone, Ian McKellen, and Tim Curry. In years past, Sam Raimi has also expressed interest in doing a Shadow movie.

The Shadow Returns!

After sixteen years, The Shadow will once again be haunting the comic book shops. The classic character who starred in both pulp magazines and his popular radio show will be returning in the hands of Dynamite Entertainment. Dynamite currently publishes pulp-related properties The Green Hornet, The Phantom and John Carter of Mars. Dynamite’s President and Publisher were quoted in a press release, saying “pursuing The Shadow has been a lifetime quest.”

No creative teams have been announced thus far.

Zorro Rides Again #1 by Matt Wagner

Matt Wagner returns to Zorro

Zorro Rides Again #1 by Matt WagnerMatt Wagner (Mage, [[[Grendel]]]) returns to conclude his story of Alejeandro de la Vega and his son, Don Diego, in Zorro Rides Again #1, coming this July from Dynamite Entertainment.

“It’s a special joy for me to return to the world and adventures of America’s first costumed adventurer– the original archetype of the modern superhero– Zorro,” says writer Wagner . “As longtime readers know, we left the narrative of the previous Zorro series on a bit of a cliffhanger and now that storyline finally comes to its exciting fruition.  These next two storylines not only introduce some major new characters but also represent significant and catastrophic changes in Zorro’s world-events that cause him to call question everything he does and everything for which he stands.”

“From cover to script to everything in between, Matt has proven himself over and over again with his thrilling, pulp-y and defining take on Zorro,” says Dynamite Editor Joe Rybandt.  “We’re pairing him up for Zorro Rides Again with artist Esteve Pols, who’s kicking the dust off his boots from the Lone Ranger/Zorro cross-over. Together, they’re going to shake up Zorro’s world as you’ve never seen before.”

‘Warehouse 13’ Opens its Doors for Dynamite Entertainment

While no creative talent has been named, we think this is a pretty cool announcement.

November 18, 2010, Runnemede, NJ – Dynamite Entertainment has signed a comprehensive license agreement with NBC Universal Television, DVD, Music and Consumer Products Group for comic books based on Syfy’s hit dramedy series, Warehouse 13. Warehouse 13 premiered on July 7, 2009 on Syfy as the most successful series in Syfy’s history and will return for a 3rd season in the Summer of 2011. A holiday-themed episode will air next month.

“We’re very excited to be working with our friends at Dynamite Entertainment, again,” said Chris Lucero, Director of Global Licensing, NBC Universal Television Consumer Products Group.  “With Dynamite’s stable of thrilling storytellers and talented artists, we’re confident that Warehouse 13 will stand side-by-side with some of the best comics in the industry today.”

“It is a fantastic opportunity for Dynamite to bring a popular TV Show such as Warehouse 13 to the comics market,” said Dynamite President Nick Barrucci.  “Dynamite’s Warehouse 13 comic books will be an excellent companion to the TV Show, and I am excited for fans to see what we have up our sleeves!”

Warehouse 13 follows two Secret Service agents who find themselves abruptly transferred to a massive, top-secret storage facility in windswept South Dakota which houses every strange artifact, mysterious relic, fantastical object and preternatural souvenir ever collected by the U.S. government. The Warehouse’s caretaker Artie Nielsen (Saul Rubinek) charges Agents Pete Lattimer (Eddie McClintock) and Myka Bering (Joanne Kelly) with chasing down reports of supernatural and paranormal activity in search of new objects to cache at the Warehouse, as well as helping him to control the Warehouse itself. Allison Scagliotti plays Claudia, Artie’s apprentice.

Warehouse 13 is produced for Syfy by Universal Cable Productions. Jack Kenny (The Book of Daniel) is Executive Producer and Showrunner.

Garth Ennis Creates ‘Jenny Blood’ for Dynamite

Garth Ennis Creates ‘Jenny Blood’ for Dynamite

Continuing writer Garth Ennis’ successful longstanding working relationship with Dynamite Entertainment, the publisher today announcde the newest hard-hitting series from Garth entitled Jennifer Blood.

The title character is a suburban wife and mom by day, and a ruthless vigilante by night!  Every day she makes breakfast, takes the kids to school, cleans the house, naps for an hour or two, makes dinner, puts the kids to bed, and kisses her husband goodnight.  At night she goes down to the secret compartment in the basement, tools up with all manner of high-powered weaponry, goes downtown and kills bad guys by the dozen- then comes home to her family.

The story is told in the form of her diary, a little pink one with a rabbit on the front. This suburban punisher is ready to be unleashed in a story that can only be told by the legendary Garth Ennis.  The company has withheld the name of the series artist but did confirm that painter Tim Bradstreet will provide the covers when the series arrives in Febraury.

“I’ve been writing such grim, serious stuff for so long now that I fancied having some fun again,” says writer Garth Ennis.  “Pitch-black fun, yes, but fun all the same. Hence Jennifer Blood.”

“Garth has an uncanny ability to create compelling characters from scratch,” Dynamite President Nick Barrucci said in a press release.  “From The Boys to Preacher – as well as re-defining an iconic character like The Punisher – we’re proud to be working with Garth on Jennifer Blood!  Tim Bradstreet painting the main covers is icing on the cake!”

Buck Rogers returns in May with 25 cent #0 issue

Buck Rogers returns in May with 25 cent #0 issue

Dynamite Entertainment announces that its upcoming Buck Rogers comic book series will blast off in May with issue #0 with the low low cover price of 25¢.

"We’re planning Buck’s launch to be one of our biggest of 2009, one that will propel him into the comics future, "said Dynamite President Nick Barrucci. "We could think of no more appropriate way to welcome fans to this totally fresh take on one of comicdom’s first heroes than to offer his first new comics adventure in years at this incredible introductory price."

"Dynamite’s reinvention of Buck Rogers will follow the path Dynamite has blazed with its previous successful titles, and to ensure the comics audience can read the launch, we’re releasing the comic at a .25¢ cover price.  Dynamite is proud to be instrumental in re-inventing and continuing the legacies of  historical characters and their worlds with creators who can execute great stories.  We’re equally proud of the consistent critical and fan responses to our efforts, and are confident that Scott Beatty and Carlos Rafael will deliver.  We’re confident that Buck Rogers will extend Dynamite’s own tradition of creating and bringing together generations of fans in the most thrilling way possible, which is why we are launching it at an Introductory Priced.  This will allow retailers to stock it, and fans to try it, and see the quality, inexpensively."

According to series writer Scott Beatty "I can’t begin to describe my excitement in working with Dynamite and the Dille Estate to chronicle the all-new adventures of science fiction’s original spaceman, Buck Rogers."

"Buck is a sci-fi icon. We wouldn’t have STAR TREK or STAR WARS or many of the familiar trappings of the genre without the trails blazed by Buck with his trusty ray-gun and jet-pack. And with that in mind, I’m humbled by the fact that I get to work with such an important and indelible literary creation.

Featuring covers by John Cassaday on the series– and a special variant cover on issue #1 by Alex Ross– with story by Scott Beatty, and interior art by Carlos Rafael, Dynamite predicts Buck Rogers will be the smash hit sci-fi and adventure series of 2009 (and beyo-o-o-o-nd).
