Chris Claremont returns to write X-Men, forever

The Cubs win the World Series. Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston get back together. Chris Claremont writes the X-Men again. One of those things, at last, has happened.

Chris Claremont, the writer of the X-Men for 16 years, from Uncanny X-Men #94 to X-Men #3, is returning to the characters that he made famous. Starting in May, Chris Claremont will be writing X-Men Forever, a new bi-weekly series that literally continues from where he left off. No really– right where he left off. X-Men Forever will create a fork in Marvel continuity, continuing the series the way he wanted. Artwork will be by Tom Grummett. The series will premiere in May, with preview issues in March and April.

Chris is also working on an original X-Men graphic novel with artwork by Milo Manera.

ComicMix will be running an in-depth interview with Chris Claremont shortly, which will explain where’s he’s going with it. In the meantime, leave your comments and questions for Chris here.

Lone Justice: Crash! is the new graphic novel from the Harvey award nominated team of Robert Tinnell and Mark Wheatley. Regular visitors to ComicMix also know Mark Wheatley as the co-creator (also along with Robert Tinnell) of EZ Street, as well as Frankenstein Mobster on his own.

For many of Mark’s fans and admirers, it is his painting and color work that set his art apart from others– and Mark has set up video cameras in his studio sanctum to document exactly what arcane methods he uses to create his color comics and illustrations. We’ve already shown you his drawing technique, now see how he finishes the work. Feel free to comment– Mark will be on hand to answer any questions.

Congratulations on your return to the small screen tonight. It’s been a while, and I know many have been awaiting your return. However, a cautionary note:

In my job here at ComicMix, I spend a lot of time talking pop culture with a number of comics professionals. I recently found myself in a discussion with a writer about Lost, and he said, quote, "I used to follow the show, but they just had too many dangling plot threads and unresolved story elements– I stopped watching."

Guys, when Chris Claremont says your series has too many dangling plotlines, you have a problem.

I mean, add a few super powers, and… hmm. Add superpowers to a convoluted plotline… didn’t I just get something about that? Why, yes I did:

Consider yourselves warned.

(Incidentally, Chris Claremont has a newly redesigned web site and blog, although he’s still working out the bugs of the migration and some of the redirects are still touchy. Go over and take a look, show him some love.)

This two-fisted pulp adventure began last week on ComicMix, but it’s been in the works for a while… in fact, we had a promotional video at the San Diego Comic-Con this past summer. Human Target TV pilot in the works for Fox

Fox is working on a pilot for the Human Target, based on the cult DC Comics character Christopher Chance, created by Len Wein, Carmine Infantino, and ComicMix contributor Dick Giordano. Christopher Chance operates by impersonating his clients in order to eliminate threats to them, making himself the target. The character first appeared in Action Comics #419.

The Human Target has already been turned into a TV series back in 1992, starring Rick Springfield. The new pilot is written by Jericho co-creator Jonathan Steinberg, and comes from Warner Bros. TV, McG’s Wonderland Sound and Vision and DC Comics. (Via Hollywood Reporter.)

Congratulations to ComicMix alumni Michael Dinowitz and his wife Judith on the birth of their newest child, a baby boy at 3:12 PM today. Little munchkin weighed 8lb 7oz and measured 21.5 inches long. Mazel tov!

Lone Justice: Crash! is the new graphic novel from the Harvey award nominated team of Robert Tinnell and Mark Wheatley. This two-fisted pulp adventure began yesterday on ComicMix, but the roots of the creation of Lone Justice: Crash! started long ago.

Creating a new graphic novel doesn’t happen in a vacuum. And people like Robert Tinnell and Mark Wheatley are easily influenced. So readers would be well advised to take a look at what other creative efforts have had a hand in shaping the look and feel.

First – we start with what has warped the mind of Robert Tinnell, in his own words:

1.) MARTIN – First and foremost I have to acknowledge George Romero’s film, MARTIN. Much of what I write is inspired by this brilliant little deconstructionist vampire story and the way it so grounded fantasy in reality, in banality, actually. I often say, quite sincerely, I consider the film an American classic. So if you’re reading LONE JUSTICE: CRASH! and detect a deconstructionist approach to the superhero genre, bear in mind that in addition to the obvious comic book influences, Romero’s flick continues to linger in the background of my mind.

ComicMix Six: What you need to know about ‘Lone Justice: Crash!’

LONE JUSTICE: CRASH! is the new graphic novel from the Harvey Award nominated team of Robert Tinnell and Mark Wheatley.  It will begin right here on ComicMix on Monday, January 12th.  And in the interest of making all things EZ, we present the top 6 essential things you should know before you start reading:

1) LONE JUSTICE: CRASH! is a two-fisted, pulp adventure set in the year 1930, just after the big Wall Street crash in 1929.  It is a time when there is great uncertainty in life, work and politics.  But it was also a time when pulp magazines were introducing vital new characters to the public that we would eventually come to call Super Heroes.  So, step aside, Doc Savage, the Shadow, and the Spider – and make way for Lone Justice!

2) LONE JUSTICE: CRASH! is the sideways sequel to the Harvey Award nominated EZ STREET graphic novel, also perpetrated by the Tinnell and Wheatley team. Why sideways? In EZ STREET, the central characters Scott and Danny Fletcher are attempting to create a graphic novel.  And LONE JUSTICE: CRASH! is the graphic novel they create.

3) Yes, that means Tinnell and Wheatley are taking credit for the work of two fictional characters.  They have no shame.

4) Maybe you don’t need to know that the core ideas behind Lone Justice’s tribulations in CRASH! can be found in the pages of EZ STREET – particularly in the character of the homeless man young Scott and Danny befriended.  But if you are aware it just might make the reading experience a little richer.  No, really – there are parallels to life events in EZ STREET all through LONE JUSTICE: CRASH!

5) You should probably be aware of just how devastating the Depression was on the United States and its residents.  It was much worse than what is going on today, so far.  Tent cities – known as Hoovervilles (after President Herbert Hoover) really existed.  Hopefully, there will not be any Bushvilles before LONE JUSTICE: CRASH! finishes running on ComicMix.

6) There were often official efforts to keep transient homeless folks out of cities and towns and even entire states.  These were people who were just trying to survive.  But California, for example, would try to keep people from pouring into the state – and they were prone to use force.

…going to be revealed in exactly 12 hours from now as part of a special edition of Doctor Who Confidential to be aired on BBC ONE today at 17:35 Greenwich mean time, 12:35 PM Eastern standard time.

Following the announcement in October that David Tennant would be stepping down from his role as the Doctor at the end of 2009*, speculation has been mounting as to who would take over from him for the fifth series of this iconic BBC drama that will air in 2010.

Who do we think will get the job? Well, there’s a reason William Petersen is leaving CSI…
