A highly placed source with one of Hollywood’s leading film production companies has revealed to ComicMix that an agent for a Scottish businessman has been offering around to studios and producers the purported feature film rights to Marvelman, the superhero property whose rights status has been in limbo since publisher Eclipse Comics went into bankruptcy in the middle of Neil Gaiman’s iconic run as its writer more than twenty years ago.

Any movement tending to resolve the rights to Marvelman – and to bring it back into print – would be welcome news for fans who have been following the Marvelman saga for more than two decades and been put through a roller coaster ride of ups and downs as a litany of claimants to the rights to Miracleman have continually come out of the woodwork.

When the title was first brought into the United States from England, Eclipse Comics prudently changed Marvelman to Miracleman to avoid obvious potential trademark issues with Marvel Comics, and the series has continued to generate interest in the comics world more than twenty years after it was last published. One top comics editor, speaking not-for-attribution, told ComicMix that “If a publisher could actually be assured that they had the rights to publish the title, and most importantly, if Neil would license the rights to his scripts and would agree to finish the scripts for the story he started but never got to finish, the book sales would be through the roof – we’re talking astronomical. The fact that the title got into the Gaiman/McFarlane litigation has kept it in the spotlight. And Alan Moore wrote issues of the title before Neil, and Alan still has a bit of a following. But Alan isn’t the key to the deal. It’s all about Gaiman.”

IDW’s #3!

IDW Publishing, home to Star Trek, 30 Days of Night, Transformers, Doctor Who, G.I. Joe, Fallen Angel, Locke and Key, and ComicMix’s upcoming line of print graphic novels and comics, today announced the 10 year old company hit the #3 spot in the monthly Diamond sales figures. That places them ahead of Image Comics and Dark Horse Comics, a remarkable achievement for a "back-of-the-catalog" publisher.

"This is a huge milestone for us, and the culmination of a decade of hard work by the many different people to have contributed to IDW over the years," IDW CEO Ted Adams stated. "This is clearly a great beginning to our second decade."

Last week, the company received no less than five Eisner nominations, and is just coming out with their 10th anniversary history. It’s been a hell of a week for the San Diego based publisher, and to celebrate the staff went to the Los Angeles Dodgers / San Diego Padres baseball game.

"IDW has always focused on producing quality comics and books, and it’s gratifying to see fans enjoying our books so much," IDW publisher and editor-in-chief Chris Ryall noted. "There is definitely a lot more great things to come for the company and our readers," no doubt referring to the upcoming release of GrimJack: The Manx Cat, Jon Sable Freelance: Ashes of Eden, and Demons of Sherwood.

Among other ComicMix projects, of course!

Now that the 2009 Eisner Award nominations are out, we’d like to again congratulate all of the nominees– but we’d like to also take a moment of your time and explain why we aren’t among them.

It’s really simple– we didn’t submit anything for the Eisner nominations this year.

This probably comes as a surprise to a number of our fans, and certainly all of the talented folks that work for us and created award worthy pieces. No, we didn’t even submit EZ Street, even though it got a Harvey nomination for 2008 as Best Online Comic.

The reason is shown in the photo to the right of the Eisner judges. See the big guy with the glasses on the far right? That’s Andrew Wheeler. He does a lot of reviewing for us here at ComicMix, and we’ve paid him for them. Filthy lucre has changed hands.

We were as surprised as he was when he was selected for the judging panel– and we knew immediately that we were in a potential ethical bind. Could we submit work without putting Andrew in a bind? Heck, there’s a category for which Andrew is indirectly eligible, Best Comics-Related Periodical/Journalism. And yet, we couldn’t in good conscience ask Andrew to recuse himself; he’s a damn fine reviewer and that’s why we love him, and a look at the nominations makes you realize exactly how good he is. But if we were nominated in any category, it would call Andrew’s impartiality into question and taint the awards.

Ultimately, we just decided to give this year’s Eisners a pass, rather than let there be even a hint of impropriety. We’re sorry that this unfairly penalizes our creators, but we didn’t see a better way.

So once more, congratulations to all the nominess. And we’ll see you this year at the Harvey Awards… and watch out for us next year in San Diego!

We’re off to I-Con 28

We’re on the road again this weekend, this time to I-Con 28, which is all over Suffolk Country this weekend (no, it’s not at Stony Brook Univeristy this year, major repairs going on, don’t ask) and various ComicMix folks will be out in force.

And many many more friendly folks– David Mack, Keith DeCandido, Peter David, Larry Hama, Jeness Crawford, Bob Rozakis, Greg Pak, Jane Yolen, Holly Black, the list goes on and on and on.

I-Con is home to one of the wider spectrums of fans, from anime to science and technology, and generally draws about six thousand people a year and is never the same from year to year. So if you’ve never been there, give it a shot. Tell them we sent you.

ComicMix co-founder, production manager and news site scribe Glenn Hauman will be leaving his position at the end of the week to focus on his growing career as a male nude model.

"I’ve been offered a stimulating position out in Long Island," Hauman stated, "and like all native Long Islanders I long for the opportunity to return. And I really mean long."

Glenn had been debating this prickly decision for some time. "I enjoy comics and I can tolerate my partners, but let’s face it — I won’t be young and handsome forever, and I owe it to humanity to squeeze every last drop out of my nature-given charms." Word has it he’s in negotiations with the renown Flava-Punisher agency.

In response to this announcement, ComicMix editor-in-chief Mike Gold stated "Are you kidding me? The guy’s 40! He can’t bend over, let alone dance! Good luck with this one, pal!"

Man, we are so behind… busy busy busy here. Some items from the past few days to tide you over:

  • The "comics on handhelds" panel at SXSW, covered by ComicMix contributor Chris Ullrich for one of the thirteen other blogs he writes for.

  • And speaking of ComicMix contributors past and present, Rick Marshall made it up to the Webcomics Weekend and covered it heavily.

  • Quote of the day, from John Rogers:
    There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

  • Take the above with a grain of salt– Rogers drinks. Heavily. And who can blame him?

  • Of course, if you want your own quote, you can try Quotes On Comics. This will probably save Dirk Deppey five minutes a day or so when he does ¡Journalista!

  • Papercutz is going to publish Geronimo Stilton graphic novels beginning in August.  The first graphic novel titles under the deal are The Discovery of America and The Secret of the Sphinx.  Scholastic Inc publishes the Geronimo Stilton book series in the US.

Lunacon 2009 will be taking place this coming weekend, March 20-22, at the Hilton Rye Town in Rye Brook, New York.

Pre-registration is closed and the hotel is already sold out, but it’s still looking like it’ll be a great show. ComicMix contributors Bob Greenberger, Jean Krevor, Amy Goldschlager, Kim Kindya, Alexandra Honigsberg, Dennis McCunney, Aaron Rosenberg, Jenifer Rosenberg, Andrew Wheeler, and yours truly are all program participants, along with guests of honor Dave Freer, Larry Dixon, Mercedes Lackey, and Eric Flint.

We hope to see you there.

Oh, and yes– Wally Wood did the logo for the convention. Ain’t that neat?
