Review: ‘Peanuts 1970’s Collection Volume 2’

As [[[the Peanuts]]] gang further cemented themselves into the fabric of American society, one could always count on the animated specials arriving each year. Unfortunately, as the 1970s progressed, the strip and specials continued to lose their charm and appeal, coasting on their heyday a decade previously.

That regression is fairly evident in [[[Peanuts 1970’s Collection Volume 2]]], out today from Warner Home Video. The two-disc set contains six episodes, one of which makes its home video debut. Absent are two self-congratulatory specials which also aired during this period.

The vocal cast changed as actors aged but remained in the same range and was likely not as noticeable year to year but is more obvious in rewatching these in a short order. There are also some odd proportional changes, notable in the final two specials contained here. There’s a different change as Vince Guaraldi’s death robbed the specials of their jazz-inspired music, which was often the best thing about any one of these.

[[[Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown]]] (1/28/75) opens the set as the gang at Birchwood Elementary School grows obsessive about the romance in the air. Linus suddenly has the hots for his teacher at one end and then there’s Schroeder, who’s fairly oblivious to the day. And then there’s poor Charlie Brown, hoping for valentines and receiving none.

There are several lapses in logic beginning with Sally and Linus suddenly in the same class as their older siblings while Peppermint Patti and Marcie are now attending the same school as their cross-town pals. Worse, the teacher has abandoned the class in the middle of the class party (with Shermy making a final cameo appearance). In during the more lax era, no adult would walk out of school leaving a room full of children unattended. Perhaps the best bit is Linus tosses away the chocolates he failed to give his teacher, unaware each piece is being gobbled up by Snoopy and Woodstock.

Last Minute Video Considerations – Family Edition

The Blu-ray conversion process continued throughout the year and there’s something for everyone. As the hours dwindle towards Santa’s arrival, here’s a trio of family-friendly Blu-ray offerings that are perfect – as long as you don’t have these on standard DVD. Warner Home Video wisely released A Charlie Brown Christmas and Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas some weeks back, completing the hat trick with the Blu-ray debut of Horton Hears a Who!

These are basically the standard DVDs upgraded to Blu-ray so everything looks and sounds marvelous. All the standard DVD extras are still here so there’s little to compel you to upgrade, especially since the prices treat these like the full-length feature films when the reality is, these were thirty minute television specials.

None of the above robs the trio from their power to entertain. The Charlie Brown special, which has been collected in multiple DVD sets, remains the king of them all as it pokes fun at the commercialization of the holiday and Linus’ speech at the end refocuses attention to the spiritual side of the holiday. With Vince Guaraldi’s amazing jazz score, this remains the gold standard.

Also earning the gold is Chuck Jones, who brilliantly adapted Dr. Seuss Grinch. He buried his own art style in favor of bringing the book to life, adding all the right touches. Having Boris Karloff narrate was a stroke of genius and the original score and songs only added to the surreal qualities that we adore about Seuss.

This Horton is the 1970 version, which is a pretty fair adaptation. Also from Chuck Jones, it shows how cheap animation had gotten in the four years between his Grinch and Horton, as the cartoon looks more limited. The adaptation boasts the usual voice actors of the era including the wonderful Hans Conreid as Horton and the narrator; June Foray and Ravenscroft.

As Blu-rays, they all look pretty fine, notably The Grinch. The extras contain making of featurettes across the thee along with biographical notes on the cast and crew, and other bits and pieces. Best are the extra animated fare such as It’s Christmastime Again, Charlie Brown, the lesser known 1992 follow-up Peanuts Christmas special or the other animated Seuss tales Daisy-Head Mayzie and. Butter Battle Book. The Grinch has the annoying Phil Hartman history from TNT but makes up for it with a nice spotlight on singer Thurl Ravenscroft and composer Albert Hague. Horton also contains the 1994 special, In Search of Dr. Seuss, which is a loving portrait of the genius.

It should be noted that the specials come as combo sets complete with standard DVD and digital copy (Windows only). If you don’t own any version, this clearly is the one to get – just find the right sale.

Review: ‘Peanuts 1970s Collection Vol. 1’ on DVD

Charles Schulz always said he created his [[[Peanuts]]] strips adults but clearly, the comic strip struck a chord with readers of all ages so by the late 1960s, the franchise had become a pop culture hit with tons of merchandising. Notable among them were the television specials which continued for decades.

A key difference between the strips and the animated television fare is that the specials are clearly aimed at younger audiences whose demands on story logic are far lower. That could explain why several of offerings contained in [[[Peanuts 1970s Collection]]] cause you to wonder how things could be. The two-disc set, out on Tuesday from Warner Home Video (who kindly provided a review copy), contains the first six specials from the decade covering 1971-1974. Eight more are no doubt being saved for volume two.

As the 1970s arrived, Peanuts stopped being about the kids and their struggles with childhood and life itself. The existential suffering of Charlie Brown was slowly being replaced with the comical exploits of Snoopy, who had eclipsed his owner in popularity. At the dawn of the new decade, Schulz gave him a buddy, Woodstock the bird. More strip and screen time was taken from the kids and given to the pet buddies. For me, the strip suffered greatly and began its long slow decline in quality during this period.

In [[[There’s no Time for Love, Charlie Brown]]] and [[[A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving]]], the absence of adults weakens the overall story. The former story involves a field trip to a local museum where Charlie Brown needs to write a top-notch report to salvage his grades. Somehow, he and Peppermint Patty, whose school is also taking a trip, wind up in a supermarket and Charlie can’t seem to tell the difference. But, where are the teachers and parent chaperons? Similarly, the holiday episode has Patty, Marcy, and Franklin somehow manage to abandon their families, having invited themselves over to Charlie’s house for the traditional meal while Charlie is expected to travel with Sally and his parents to grandma’s house. At no point does it make sense these kids would be allowed to leave family traditions nor would Charlie’s parents actively allow him to prep a meal (albeit one consisting of toast, popcorn, jelly beans and pretzel sticks). There’s also something just plain wrong about watching Woodstock eat turkey during the end credits.

Review: ‘Peanuts 1960’s Collection’ DVD

I’ll be honest and tell you that I am in the minority who felt that [[[Peanuts]]] stopped being funny after 1972 and should have been retired long before Charles M. Schulz’s death. All its charm and whimsy had been drained out of it as witnessed by the 1970s material that has been reprinted since his passing. The world had changed and their innocent worldview ceased to feel at all relevant.  But once Schulz found his characters and voice, the strip was brilliant for quite some time.

By 1965, Charles Schulz’s Peanuts had grown to become one of the most popular comic strips launched since the end of World War II if not the 20th Century. It made perfect sense that the characters would eventually find their way onto television. They were first licensed for use as pitchmen for Ford in 1961 and appeared in black and white commercials animated by Bill Meléndez. When Lee Mendelson tried to make a documentary on Schulz in 1963, he hired Meléndez to create a short segment while hiring Vince Guaraldi for the score. The proposed show never sold but sowed the seeds for what came soon after.

As we know today, that first holiday special, was something unique and heartwarming from Guaraldi’s amazing score to the characters being funny and poignant.  While the holiday-themed specials have become television perennials, several of the others have not achieved the same attention.

That oversight is rectified in the Peanuts 1960’s Collection
, coming Tuesday from Warner Home Video. Those first six half-hour cartoons which set the standard for animated specials thereafter, are collected on two discs. In addition to [[[A Charlie Brown Christmas]]], there’s also [[[Charlie Brown’s All-Stars]]], [[[It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown]]], [[[You’re in Love, Charlie Brown]]], [[[He’s your Dog Charlie Brown]]], and [[[It was a Short Summer, Charlie Brown]]].

Interview: Jeff Kinney

Nine years ago, game developer Jeff Kinney started to write the diary of a boy named Gregg Heffley.  A few years after that, he began to publish the story on the website FunBrain.com.    Charles Kochman  picked it up for the Harry N. Abrams imprint, Amulet Books, and the Diary of a Wimpy Kid phenomenon was on.

Since then, Kinney published a sequel, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules and, this month, the Diary of a Wimpy Kid Do it Yourself Book.   A third story, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Last Straw is due in January.

The series has a passionate following.  Like Harry Potter, the books attract kids (who may be too young for Rowling’s longer novels) who can’t wait to read them.  Bookstores plan parties around new volumes.

Jeff was in Baltimore for the recent Comic-Con, where Abrams sold advance copies of the new Do It Yourself book. We spoke with him at the Harvey awards, where he was nominated in eight categories, including Best New Talent, Best New Series, Best Writer, and Special Award for Humor.  He lost in every category, but he had the longest lines at the show, as kids waited an hour and more for his autograph.

ComicMix: 
I read your books this week. Sorry I’m a little late, but my kid is grown.  They’re really fun.  I met your mom today.  I saw the line for your signing, which was thrilling. 

Jeff Kinney:  Thank you very much.  I had no idea if it was long or short.  I just sat there and signed. 

CMx:  Was this your first comic convention?  I know you’ve done book conventions. 

JK:  I’ve done a few others.  Actually, I got my book picked up at New York Comic-Con two years ago.  And I just wandered around with a manuscript and lucked into meeting Charlie Kochman, who picked it up on first sight.  He took a look at it for maybe 30 seconds and said, “This is what we want.  This is why we came here.”

Obama, McCain or Snoopy?

Obama, McCain or Snoopy?

For those turned off by both Obama and McCain and won’t even consider Nader, then you might want to consider exercising your right by voting for Charlie Brown. To keep people engaged in the electoral process Rock the Vote has worked with United Media to craft a Peanuts-centric website where people can legitimately register for the general election while also casting a vote for Snoopy, Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy or Sally.

No surprise that as of this morning, Snoopy has a strong lead across the land. Additionally, Warner Home Video has planned a rerelease of You’re Not Elected, Charlie Brown for October 7.  The DVD has been remastered in a new deluxe edition.

By 1967, [[[Peanuts]]] wasn’t just another comic strip in the local newspaper, it was a media phenomenon. The first TV special, A Charlie Brown Christmas, had won an Emmy amid universal acclaim two years earlier, and You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown was about to open on Broadway. It was the epitome of mainstream entertainment – on May 24th, California Governor Ronald Reagan and the state legislature even proclaimed it “Charles Schulz Day.” The strip hadn’t quite hit its ‘70s mega-merchandising heyday, but it was getting there.

At the same time, not all that far from Schulz’s Santa Rosa home, Berkley was roiling with anti-war fervor and the Summer of Love had hit San Francisco. Peanuts had been seen as an edgy, almost countercultural strip in the early 1950s, but those days were long past, and Peanuts was the Establishment. In those days, you were with the pigs or with the longhairs, right? And where did Peanuts stand?

From the evidence here, Peanuts stood where it had always stood: on its own, only rarely commenting on specific issues of the day (such as the “bird-hippie” who would become Woodstock in another year or two), but talking around those issues in ways that most of America could laugh at… some more uncomfortably than others. Schulz was never one to declare himself on one side of an issue or the other; he’d just write and draw his cartoons, and let others make their interpretations.

It’s hard to wait for February 13th when you’re a California resident. There you are, counting down the days until a kid in a yellow, zig-zagged shirt comes down your chimney, pontificates on life and lets out bloodcurdling screams of "Aaaaarrrrghh!" while trying in vain to kick your football.

Sadly, you have another six days to wait until Charles M. Schulz Day. Yes, on today’s date in 2000, the California Legislature declared February 13th the official day to honor the creator of Charlie Brown, who died just a day earlier on Feb. 12. They liked him so much, in fact, that they also named an airport after him.

Just think, comic hopefuls, someday something as simple as a few scribbles of a beagle with World War I-related delusions could earn you a day of recognition and your name on a major traffic hub.

One of my favorite bloggers, Jon Swift, stepped out of satirical mode for a post to excoriate Chris Muir, a radical reactionary strip cartoonist who recently drew Hillary Clinton in blackface to mock a recent speech given by the Senator in which she quoted a Negro spiritual by affecting a cadence that didn’t sound quite right coming from a white upper-class woman.  (Lots of folks from all ends of the political spectrum were able to mock that same speech snippet without adding insult to injury.)

Swift noted, "If Chris Muir drew Charles Schulz’s Peanuts, for example, he wouldn’t have bothered drawing a panel showing Lucy pulling the football away at the last minute when Charlie Brown tries to kick it. That would be too Old School for him. Instead, Muir would just have Lucy say, ‘Democrats always pull the football away at the last minute when you are trying to kick it, Charlie Brown.’ Lucy and Charlie Brown would also probably be in their underwear."  His commenters responded by issuing a challenge to bloggers to "Show us how Chris Muir would do your favourite newspaper, comic book or web comic!"

Lots of popular liberal bloggers have already responded, including Chris Clark (For Better or For Muir), skippy the bush kangaroo (who riffs on Muir with Mutts) and Amanda Marcotte of Pandagon, who I think captures Muir’s zeitgeit perfectly with this apology to Aaron McGruder:
