Brian K. Vaughan to Write ‘Runaways’ Movie

Brian K. Vaughan to Write ‘Runaways’ Movie

Big name superheroes like The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers aren’t the only Marvel properties hitting the big screen.

The lesser known characters are getting their crack at film stardom, including the ragtag group of young heroes known as the Runaways.

Created in 2002 by Brian K. Vaughan as part of Marvel’s Tsunami line, Runaways follows a group of kids who discover their parents are evil supervillains. Vaughn, who left the series at the conclusion of the second volume, will return to the property he co-created and write the script for the upcoming movie.

No director is currently attached to the film, but maybe they’ll hire Richard Donner and the movie will be like a super-powered version of The Goonies.

Nick Fury May Appear in Future Marvel Films

Nick Fury May Appear in Future Marvel Films

Nick Fury’s appearance in the special scene after the end credits of Iron Man may not be the last we see of the man with the eye patch.

Fans have assumed that Samuel L. Jackson will naturally resume the role in the forthcoming Avengers movie, but now we have a little more evidence to support that prediction. Well, not much, but at least it’s something.

According to Devin Faraci at CHUD, Jackson recently met with Kevin Feige, the President of Production at Marvel Studios. The two haven’t met since Jackson filmed the cameo scene in Iron Man. It’s only idle speculation as to what the two met about, but Marvel could be getting a fast start on assembling its Avengers and getting them locked down with contracts.

The Avengers film is currently slated for release in July 2011.

‘Punisher War Zone’ Teaser Poster Released

‘Punisher War Zone’ Teaser Poster Released

Punisher War Zone won’t be hitting theaters until December, but that’s not about to stop the marketing machine at Lions Gate from advertising it. The first poster for the film has been released and, well, it’s about what you’d expect. The Punisher loves bullets and he loves skulls, so why not combine the two?

It looks like an image ready made for a shirt at Hot Topic, if it isn’t already on sale there already. At least the poster lets us know that lots of bullets will be fired in the film. Will there be anymore parking ticket antics with fire hydrants like in the last Punisher movie though?

Punisher War Zone hits theaters on December 5. The film stars Ray Stevenson as Frank Castle/The Punisher, Dominic West as Jigsaw and Wayne Knight as Microchip.

Official ‘Hellboy II’ Poster Revealed

Official ‘Hellboy II’ Poster Revealed

When it comes to comic book movies this summer, most of the attention has been focused on Iron Man and The Dark Knight. What about the man with the big red fist?

Hellboy II: The Golden Army hits theaters on July 11 and has the potential to be the best of the lot. After all, Academy Award nominated director Guillermo del Toro is at the helm of the picture and it stars Ron Perlman. Everyone loves Ron Perlman, right?

The marketing machine for the upcoming sequel is starting to kick into gear, beginning with the release of the official one-sheet poster you’re sure to see in the multiplex soon. Sure, it’s not as cool as the Drew Struzan poster, but nothing is. Struzan posters are just too awesome for the common man. Besides, this official poster has everything you need to know about the film: there’s a red guy with a big fist and a gun. Enough said.

For a look at the full sized poster, visit Superhero Hype and judge for yourself how cool Hellboy’s leather pants are.

Witchblade Hits the Big Screen with New Movie

Witchblade Hits the Big Screen with New Movie

Why should Marvel and DC be the only comic book companies making serious bank at the box office? Top Cow Productions has officially begun work on a live-action feature adaptation of their popular Witchblade comic book series.

The series already spawned a live-action television show on TNT that lasted for two seasons. Plus, half naked women beating up bad guys with an awesome glove is the type of can’t miss concept that Hollywood craves.

The producers hope to start production of the film in September.

First ‘Dragonball’ Poster Revealed

First ‘Dragonball’ Poster Revealed

Dragonball may not be coming out until next year, but 20th Century Fox is getting an early jump on advertising. The first teaser posters for the film have been spotted in the wild and they’re, well, about what you would expect: a picture of a ball.

If someone was unfamiliar with the concept behind Dragonball, they might just think it’s a sports movie similar to Rollerball or a film inspired by Marble Madness. Depending on how you feel about the manga and the anime, those might be preferable options.

Slashfilm has the full-sized picture of the teaser poster if you can’t get enough pictures of balls.

‘Mortal Kombat Versus DC Universe’ A Reality?

‘Mortal Kombat Versus DC Universe’ A Reality?

There were rumors back in Fall 2007 that the next Mortal Kombat game would pit the Kombatants against superheroes from the DC Universe, but they were quickly scoffed at and ignored.

After all, how could these two universes possibly come together? Would DC really allow Scorpion to rip Batman’s head off? Foolishness!

Well, all those people look like the fools now. Mortal Kombat Online has gotten wind that Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe is a reality.

The Mortal Kombat series is good at violence but poor when it comes to the comic book universe (see Malibu’s Mortal Kombat comics). On the flip side, the DC superheroes are great at comics and poor when it comes to fighting games (see Justice League Task Force on the 16-bit consoles). Can these two great tastes combine and taste great together?

Not many details about the title are known at the moment. Future details (and an official confirmation from Midway) may be forthcoming on developer Ed Boon’s website, Noob.com.

Black Panther Cartoon in Development

Black Panther Cartoon in Development

Spider-Man and the X-Men are almost always on television in one animated form of another. Heck, even iron Man is getting an animated series these days. Can’t we see new characters getting a shot at animated success instead of the same old same old?

Apparently, we can. During BET’s network upfront presentation, it was announced that a Black Panther animated series will debut on the channel in the future.

No information was given as to when we can expect to see the series or what it will be like, but considering Reginald Huldin is BET’s president of entertainment and also the current writer for the Black Panther comic series, the character should be in good hands.

‘Catwoman’ Cancelled With Issue #82

‘Catwoman’ Cancelled With Issue #82

After DC released its last round of solicitations, people naturally assumed Catwoman was being cancelled with issue #81. That’s just unfounded nonsense. It’s actually being cancelled with issue #82!

According to writer Will Pfeifer, Selina Kyle will get one more issue in August before her solo title officially gets the axe. Did she have to spend one of her nine lives to do it? If so, does she have any more to spare in order to get a series relaunch?

Perhaps in the future, but as of now, Pfeifer has no information on any future plans for Catwoman. Fans will just have to be happy with one extra helping of their favorite cat buglar for the time being.
