New Pulp Author Jim Beard reviews Altus Press’ Doc Savage “Skull Island” novel by New Pulp Author Will Murray.

If you’re like me, you probably wondered what exactly we’d be getting in the new Doc Savage novel, SKULL ISLAND, it being both a Doc story featuring King Kong and a way to celebrate the 80th anniversaries of both legendary creations. Well, after reading the book, I’m happy to report that author Will Murray’s put some definite heart and soul into it and crafted what is now my most favorite of the recent “Wild Adventures of Doc Savage” series of novels.

But, that said, it’s different from just about any other Doc book you’ve ever read, something we’re clued in on by the “Will Murray” byline and the absence of the traditional “Kenneth Robeson” house name.

For me, the story was literally one that I didn’t want to put down; it’s that engaging. It begins at the end, right after Kong’s infamous nosedive off the Empire State Building, which leads directly to Doc’s involvement – or, rather, his telling of a tale to his aides of when he first met the giant simian. Yes, the great majority of the novel is a flashback to Doc Savage’s early days and therein is found its fascinating core. In essence, what we have here is the heretofore Secret Origin of Doc Savage.

Doc and his father – yes, you read that right; his father – head off on a quest for Doc’s grandfather, Stormalong Savage, which takes them into strange waters and exotic climes…and ultimately Skull Island. There they run afoul of enemies of many different stripes and discover wonders beyond their imagining. And a humongous ape-like “god-beast” called Kong.

Murray’s defining of the relationship here between Clark Senior and Clark Junior is practically worth the price of admission alone. This is a young Doc, fresh out of World War I and not exactly the bronze hero of the pulp adventures we know so well, and it’s with that admission that I can see some potential backlash with diehard Doc fans. This is a Doc who has not quite found his mission in life yet, nor honed all his skills and formed his famous tenets – most especially the rule against killing. This Doc kills and kills in often savage ways, which at points drenches the narrative in a bloodbath that may even disturb some readers. But, and it’s important to point this out, there’s a method behind Murray’s seeming madness – it all leads to something and something significant, namely the forging of the Doc Savage of the famous pulp adventures. And Murray does this all with style and careful thought and exciting imagery and action.

One of the things I loved about this novel is its use of language, precisely that which flies back and forth between elder and younger Savage in many bouts of witty verbal “fencing.” Will Murray has obviously crafted all his Doc books with care, but in SKULL ISLAND I believe I saw even more attention to detail, to dialogue, to atmosphere and to adventure. The story moves right along, only slightly bogging down a bit past its mid-section, and really defines the term “page turner.” Murray gives this one his best and finest and the book benefits from that in ways too numerous to list.

As I said before, this is a story of origins. Here we learn the origin of Doc’s trilling, of his disdain of guns and his inexhaustible search for knowledge, even the origin of the Hidalgo Trading Co. hanger. We also discover more information on the Savage family then we’ve ever had revealed to us before and hints of not only some of Doc’s other early adventures – did you know he was on the Titanic? – but also those of his father and grandfather, both famous explorers in their own right. Heck, we even hear about Doc’s uncle, another adventurer in the family. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the author is suggesting here that readers might care to hear more of these adventures, as separate works.

But, again, it’s the relationship between father and son that really stands out in the novel, one that careens between dysfunctional and loving, and it’s that which will stay with me for some time to come. In fact, knowing the fate of Clark Savage Senior in 1933’s MAN OF BRONZE will perhaps add another layer of pathos to your reading of SKULL ISLAND.

And, oh yes, King Kong is here, too. You will discover much more about his origins, also, as well as Skull Island’s original inhabitants. And that’s all fascinating as well. Dinosaur fans will especially have reason to love this book. Kong and his environs are not given short shrift in the slightest; the King looms over this book with all the weight and gravity he deserves.

In all, I’m a richer pulp fan for having read SKULL ISLAND. Will Murray takes our expectations and delivers upon them while still striking off on his own path, assembling a story that will please both Savage and Kong aficionados and remind us all just how cool pulp can be. There’s heart and soul here, like I said, and I for one can’t quite see how Murray will manage to top this one….but I know he will, somehow.

Known for breaking new ground in radio and entertainment, Dragnet was truly a pioneering program in many ways. This was most evident in the actual stories told in each episode, some sentimental, some brutal, all as realistic as show star and creator Jack Webb could make them. Strong stories and great characterizations make up every show featured in Dragnet, Volume 7.

The story featured in each episode is, as noted in the famous opening narration, “…true.” Although many shows focused on lesser crimes, Dragnet did not shy away from violence or topics thought forbidden. This program was in every sense a true police procedural and dealt with crimes of all sorts. Dragnet was one of the first radio shows to deal with crimes involving sexual motivations, true psychological issues, drug use among juveniles, and even the murder of children. Never gratuitous in its portrayal, Dragnet dealt with all crimes the same way that Jack Webb delivered Joe Friday’s lines – honestly and starkly.

The episodes featured in this volume are during a period of transition for Dragnet and for Joe Friday. Webb’s Friday had several partners performed by six different actors after the death of Barton Yarborough and before Ben Alexander became his partner permanently as Frank Smith.

The realistic interplay of characters on Dragnet captures a listener’s attention, giving fans that almost fly on the wall feeling as they listen to Friday and his partner investigate and interrogate. Ever since Sax Rohmer conceived Dr. Fu Manchu, thriller writers have attempted to emulate his sinister appeal. No class of authors vied to out-villain Rohmer more than the pulp writers of the 1930s. The very best of these imitations was the work of top pulpateer Donald E. Keyhoe, later to make headlines as the retired Air Force officer who claimed that flying saucers were real.
 
Dr. Yen Sin lasted only three issues in 1936, but Keyhoe’s short-lived trilogy was a memorable attempt to given the “Yellow Peril” theme a mature and suspenseful treatment. The premise is a familiar one—a sinister Chinese super-scientist out to conquer the world. Pitted against him is the Q-Group, headed by State Department operative Michael Traile, who because of a childhood accident cannot sleep. Instead, he employs Yoga as a substitute. Under Traile are a host of secret agents, chief of whom is Eric Gordon of the F. B. I., who reports personally to Director John Glover—actually J. Edgar Hoover. Adding a dash of feminine mystique is Sin’s mysterious cohort, Sonya Damatri, while Eric Gordon’s girlfriend, Iris Vaughan, furnishes the series’ love interest.

As always I would like to thank our friends over at Radio Archives for giving me the opportunity to review another of Will Murray’s Pulp Classic audiobooks. This time around it’s for what might possibly be the pulpiest sounding character I’ve ever had the privilege to learn about, Captain Satan: King of Adventure!
 
To be fair I always take my time looking over the newsletters that Radio Archives send me, just checking out the new Old Time Radio programs or Audiobooks that might catch my eye and that are worthy of your attention. Just a few weeks ago an item in the latest newsletter made me sit up straight and immediately send in a request to review Captain Satan, you see for many years now I’ve had a Captain Satan print hanging on the wall next to my Universal Monsters posters…the same image of Captain Satan above…I’ve always been so curious as to what this character was all about. Thankfully I got my chance and I’ve added this fantastic character to my top five favorite pulp characters of all time!
 
Why? Well, when author William O’Sullivan crafted Captain Satan and his wealthy alter-ego Cary Adair he took the best elements of the Scarecrow of Romney Marsh (Reverend Syn/Doctor Syn), the Shadow, Doc Savage and even some of Robin Hood and crafted a dark pulp avenger for the ages.
 
How can you not love Pulp prose like this: “He held in his hands the burning brand of Hell and in his heart was locked the courage of the Gods. Wise Guys and Tough Mugs, Crooks and their thieving Mobs knew the mark of Satan.”
 
Now that Pulp writing is just from the intro and for Pulp Fiction fanatics you can spread it on some toast and eat it up! Don’t take my word for it though, listen to the Opening Credits that Radio Archives has so kindly provided.
 
 
Sadly one of the reasons I couldn’t find out much about the character was that O’Sullivan wrote only five Captain Satan novels in his day though he penned many Sports, Crime, and Aviation Pulp tales in his time. After listening to this first Audiobook for Captain Satan, the story which was originally published by Popular Publications in March 1938, I can only hope that Will Murray and the talented narrator/actor Michael C. Gwynne will team up to bring us the other four adventures in the series!
 
I cannot praise Michael C. Gwynne enough for his performance on this audiobook and I swear he is channeling James Coburn when he is playing the part of Cary Adair/Captain Satan…maybe with a bit of Patrick McGoohan thrown in as well? Michael is no stranger to retro TV and movies by the way, he landed roles on Dallas, Kojak, and Falcon Crest, Hill Street Blues, Cagney and Lacey, CHiPS, and an episode of Amazing Stories that just happened to be directed by Martin Scorsese before teaming up with the talented Will Murray.
 
So what does the story The Masked of the Damned entail? I’ll avoid big spoilers of course but we learn early on from the character Jo Desher, who just happens to be the Head of the F.B.I. that things in Washington are going off the rails. Military officials are acting odd, crying for changes that will drastically lower the effectiveness of the armed forces. The Treasury Department is concocting a scheme that rational voices point out will shatter the economy as well as the Labor Department asking for permission to unionize all Government Employees including all branches of the Military.
 
Luckily for the Head of the F.B.I. though unbeknownst to him…at least for the time being…his well-to-do layabout friend Adair is none other than the legendary Captain Satan. After the two men survive no less than two assassination attempts it’s time for Jo to leave for Washington D.C. and for the “good” Captain to assemble the Satan’s Crew. Which is like a dark version of Doc Savage’s The Fabulous Five, a collection of scoundrels with code names like Slim, Frenchie, Big Bill, Soapy, Kayo, Happy, Doc, Mike and Gentleman Dan who answer the summons of Captain Satan and you certainly are made aware with their introductions that it’s not prudent or healthy to cross Captain Satan. Of course to be honest it’s not necessarily healthy to team up with Captain Satan either…unlike Doc Savage’s aides against crime and tyranny, the Captain’s allies don’t all get to come home and fight the good fight another day. Though with the Robin Hood aspect, the reason the Satan’s Crew are convened is not 100% for noble reasons:
 
“You know my principles: To smash every crook I can lay my hands on—and what he has is mine. I’ll break every petty or large crook, every swindling racketeer or grafting politician or gyp banker I can lay my hands on. The terms you already know. What they have is ours. I pay the expenses and take a one third cut. You boys split the remainder on equal shares.”
 
So will Captain Satan and his Crew be able to take on this shadowy organization that seems to have infiltrated the United States Government? Will our soiled do-gooders be able to outsmart both the combined forces of G-Men headed by Jo Dershel and the evil ‘Gang’ that seems intent on wrecking the United States itself? What of the Mask of the Damned?

While that first issue of Doc Savage was fresh on Depression newsstands,
RKO Pictures released one of the most important fantasy films of
all time. Everyone knows the story of how King Kong was discovered on
Skull Island and hauled back to New York in chains, only to perish
tragically atop the world’s tallest skyscraper, the Empire State
Building.

As it happened, that was where Doc Savage had his world headquarters.
For decades, fans have wondered: Where was Doc the day Kong fell?

On the eightieth anniversary of these fictional giants, Altus Press is

In the Fall of 1937, Popular Publications launched a new type of detective magazine, one that combined the Weird Menace-style stories that had made Terror Tales and Horror Stories so hot with readers of hardboiled detective-action tales. They called it Strange Detective Mysteries.
 
In his first-issue editorial, Managing Editor Rogers Terrill set the stage:
 
“Remember the time you read that one perfect knockout, detective story—bizarre, mysterious, thrill-packed, different? It still remains the detective story for you. You’ve wondered why you never found another. You searched bookstores, library shelves, newsstands—but you just couldn’t find that brand!
 
“Beginning with this issue—we give you Strange Detective Mysteries—not only one bizarre, thrilling eerie-laden mystery story such as you’ve searched for, but a whole magazine full of them!
 
“Because you have sought for this highest type of detective story, without finding it, you can understand at what cost we bring you this magazine. Months of planning and effort have gone into its making. The best known and most able detective-story writers have been called upon—for their best. Only the smallest proportion of a flood of manuscripts has been chosen.
 
“Crime-detection, adventure, baffling mystery—all this you will find in Strange Detective Mysteries. In addition, you will find that quality which appears in a detective story only once in a blue moon—the bizarre!”
 
Terrill used the word bizarre no less than five times in his editorial, italicizing it twice. He was serious! Strange Detective Mysteries was beyond weird.
 
For his lead novel, Terrill served up “When the Death-Bat Flies,” by the writer he called “America’s No. 1 Master of the Extraordinary Mystery Tale”—The Spider’s Norvell W. Page. Starring master magician Aubrei Dunne, it was a wild excursion into a criminal cult dedicated to murder and mayhem.
 
In “Madame Murder—and the Corpse Brigade,” Paul Ernst offered an even more bizarre hero—Seekay, the man with no face!
 
The detective protagonist of Wayne Rogers’ “The Headman’s Hat-Box” witnesses a murder committed by—himself!
 
In George Armin Shaftel’s “The Miracle Murder Case,” a prison break is engineered by an unknown mastermind who terrorizes society with a strange super-weapon!
 
Terror Tales favorite Arthur Leo Zagat’s “Patents for Dr. Death” revisits the realm of Jack the Ripper—but with an uncanny twist.

The Spider finds himself jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire almost literally in this adventure. The Spider is again wrongly accused of a murder, but this time Richard Wentworth finds himself in the hands of the police for this crime. Having gathered what they believe is concrete evidence that he is the Spider, the authorities are taking no chances on him once again gaining his freedom. Though Wentworth and Kirkpatrick are the best of friends, Stanley can’t shirk his duties. Richard Wentworth’s fate is left to the few companions that he can always count on as well as his vast knowledge if he is to avoid the chair!

Meanwhile a homicidal maniac seems to be looking to set ablaze the world’s food supply. One after another, major food suppliers in the area are watching not only their product, but in many cases their workers being burnt to a crisp by the hideous figure known as ‘The Red Mask.’ He appears to have no rhyme or reason, but the Spider has it all figured out. He knows that the man must be tied into the food business in some form, and therefore is looking to drive the market up.

The odds are stacked against the Spider as he is literally held in wrist and ankle shackles, but somehow must escape to put a stop to this new menace that threatens the world’s food supply.

I prefer RadioArchives.com as the cheaper prices and multiple formats is better value, and it’s good to be kept informed of future releases, etc. It’s great to hear that more ebooks and especially audiobooks are planned. The two readers on Terror Tales are perfect for the spirit of these stories. A 1930s Robin Hood, dashing Cary Adair steals from the wealthy—and splits the proceeds with his well-named Satan’s Crew. They are a loose collection of shifty characters with monikers like Doc, Kayo, Soapy, Big Bill and Gentleman Dan—many of whom don’t survive working for the satanic captain for very long. That was the refreshing thing about William O’Sullivan’s dashing demi-hero: In the realistic and hard-hitting milieu he painted, not every heroic henchman lives to fight another day.
 
As Satan tells them: “You know my principles: To smash every crook I can lay my hands on—and what he has is mine. I’ll break every petty or large crook, every swindling racketeer or grafting politician or gyp banker I can lay my hands on. The terms you already know. What they have is ours. I pay the expenses and take a one third cut. You boys spilt the remainder on equal shares.”

William O’Sullivan was a prolific producer of pulp crime, sports and aviation stories. He penned only five novels for Captain Satan magazine, but they are nice smooth examples of 1938 pulp. And they carry the distinct flavor of Popular Publications—a kind of pulpy Warner Bros. movie on paper.

 
One amusing thing about Cary Adair is that he was best buds with the head of the F.B.I.—in this series called Jo Desher. In real life, he was J. Edgar Hoover. Desher soon begins to suspect that his wealthy friend is the brains behind Captain Satan. But proving it is another matter….

In 1934 a new type of magazine was born. Known by various names — the shudder pulps, mystery-terror magazines, horror-terror magazines — weird menace is the sub-genre term that has survived today. Terror Tales magazine was one of the most popular. It came from Popular Publications, whose publisher Harry Steeger was inspired by the Grand Guignol theater of Paris. This breed of pulp story survived less than ten years, but in that time, they became infamous, even to this day. City of Crime takes The Shadow to Westford. Crime had infiltrated to the very highest levels of city government and it would take all the power and abilities of The Shadow to defeat the mobsters who ruled with impunity.
 
Westford is in the hands of mobsters, starting with low-lifes like Lance Gillick who runs the Club Adair as a gambling joint, and his lieutenant Beezer Dorsch. Gillick and Dorsch are getting away with murder… literally! It’s all simple when the Director of Police Kirk Borman is one of the mobsters running the show. And he’s created the Flying Squadron, a special khaki-clad force of forty officers who are in actuality hand-picked thugs. To the public, this is a special task force that can be rapidly deployed into action against crime. But in reality, it’s a cover-up squad that covers for crooks and guns down any innocents in the way.
 
The Shadow is on the case! And it’s a good thing, because without The Shadow, the entire town of Westford would fall under the evil sway of the mobsters hidden in the guise of high-level officials.  During most of the story, The Shadow works alone in Westford in his disguise as Theo D. Shaw, described as a tall, haggard-faced individual, whose eyes were restless. But this character is soon framed by the corrupt officials, and is on the run, himself. So The Shadow shows up next in another disguise; that of Trig Callister, a New York gangster and trigger-man.
 
It should be pointed out that The Shadow’s disguise as Theo D. Shaw was never used again in any other pulp novel. Apparently it was a throw-away disguise, one which he had no interest in keeping.

Even though World War II was still a ways off, apparently feeling against Japanese was running high. It shows in the racial slurs in this story. Haija, crime boss Stephen Ruthley’s Japanese house-man, is constantly referred to as a “grinning Jap.” And The Shadow has oppor-tunity to whip him good, using his own jujitsu against him. American readers probably found satisfaction in that.
 

This was a fun little crime drama. No ghosts, mad scientists or exotic locales. Just a straight-forward gangster tale, well told as only Walter Gibson could. And this tale plus another full length Shadow novel can be yours in The Shadow, Volume 16. $12.95

The Fibber McGee and Molly Show: The 1939/1940 Season
I’ve had this great Fibber and Molly set for quite a while now, and I’ve been meaning to write you and thank you for it for nearly as long, but life got in the way. This set is amazing–not only because of the quality of the restored recordings, but also because of the number of firsts which occurred in this season of the show.
 
First, the quality. One would think that by now, I’d have become so accustomed to the great quality of your work that it would cease to amaze me, and yet, that is simply not the case. Considering the age of these episodes, I listen to the orchestral numbers and marvel at the separation which can be heard among the instruments. Oh, of course, I don’t mean separation in a stereophonic sense, but rather, in the clarity of the sounds. I can hear the crispness of the saxophones, the brightness of the brass, the smoothness of the strings. To compare to my average listening experience with old-time radio programs, if I heard a similar song, I’d know there was a brass section, a saxophone section and a string section, but the sound would not be nearly so well-defined. And that’s just the music! Barring small sections where one can hear some scratching buried deep in the background (which in no way affects the listening experience, I assure you!), the actors’ dialogue shines through with a pristine clarity which far surpassed my admittedly high expectations. (Hey, don’t blame me if you set the bar so high as to raise my expectations to such a degree.) And my, how young Harlow Wilcox sounds in these recordings!
 
Okay, enough about the quality. What are the “firsts” listeners can look forward to herein? Let’s see …
 
The first appearance of a certain Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve. There are even a few instances in the early episodes of the set where Hal Perry makes an appearance as other small roles, before Gildy is “officially” introduced. By the end of 1941, he would have his own spin-off show.
 
The first occurrence of the hall closet being opened. One of the most famous bits of Fibber and Molly comedy, and it got its start right here in this season of the show.
 
And last, but in no way least, this season introduces us to the King’s Men, who, if I’m not mistaken, would stay with the show to the end of the Johnson’s Wax run. We don’t get to hear their traditional “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” piece yet, but we do get to hear plenty of examples of why these four men are among the most talented quartets of the era … at least, in this listener/reviewer’s opinion.
 
All of this is just a long-winded way of saying thank you for providing this complete season of shows, which is not only a great season of comedy, but also a real slice of Fibber and Molly history. I hope there are more season sets to come. You can be sure I wil be a proud purchaser!

The Railroad Hour presented abridged versions of some of the most popular and beloved musicals and operettas of all time.
