Swipe File: Rep. Paul Ryan and Gary “Smiler” Callahan

Swipe File is normally Rich Johnston’s beat, but since he’s not into American politics, he might not catch this one.

On the left is Gary Callahan, a.k.a. The Smiler, from Warren Ellis and Darick Robertson’s Transmetropolitan. On the right is U.S. Representative Paul Ryan (R-WI), Chairman of the House Budget Committee and who we should note is not Paul Ryan, the comics artist for Fantastic Four, D.P. 7, Quasar, and The Phantom.

One of these individuals has good looks and a certain amount of charisma, but has no empathy for the lower classes of society. He has designs on the presidency, and will cut odious political deals to make that happen, all while being fawned over by right wing pundits and a segment of the voters who are convince that he will save us from “the Beast”.

The other, of course, is a character out of the comic books.

For further comparison, consider this page from Transmetropolitan #41, and remember that this came out over 10 years ago. Sounds like something Ryan could have said last week, when he tried to shut down the U.S. federal government.

And then we have Heavy Ink, who thought the shooting was a good idea

And then we have Heavy Ink, who thought the shooting was a good idea

The shooting in Tucson, Arizona over the weekend, which left Rep. Gabrielle Giffords
in a coma and six others dead, has been universally condemned by almost every sane person. On the not-so-sane side, Travis Corcoran, the
president of Heavy Ink, an online comic book retailer based in Arlington, Massachusetts, had a different message:
1 down, 534 to go.”

In a post on his blog, Corcoran asked that while you are in the process of
assassinating those 534 political leaders, it is important to aim very
carefully so that you do not kill random people around them, as that
would be bad.

Reading his rant and the various commenters that follow him, I begin to wonder if there are cases where Dr. Fredric Wertham was right.

I also wonder, with many comic creators including Warren Ellis, Gail Simone, Nick Spencer, and Paul Cornell calling for a boycott of his store, how long he’s going to stay in business.

The Point Radio: ‘The Prisoner’ Remade Or Ruined?

This week, AMC premieres their updated version of the classic sf/ fantasy series, THE PRISONER. We begin our backstage visit to the set by tackling the question of how to approach the story with a 2009 eye and yet still keep at least some of the 1968 charm. Producer Trevor Hopkins gives his frank answers, plus the cast of NBC tells us what they really think about the JAY LENO situation and Warren Ellis sells more stuff to the movies!

New Alan Moore zine, free Charles Vess, submit to Viz, and Gravel to film: ComicMix Quick Picks for 10/9/09

New Alan Moore zine, free Charles Vess, submit to Viz, and Gravel to film: ComicMix Quick Picks for 10/9/09

All the quick news while shooting at the moon and waiting for stories from Baltimore Comic-Con to come in…

  • Alan Moore is launching Dodgem Logic, “the 21st century’s first underground magazine
from his home town of Northampton, a community that is right at the
geographical, political and economic heart of the country; one which
has half its high street boarded up and is at present dying on its
arse, just like everywhere else.” Josie Long, Graham Linehan, Kev O’Neill, Melinda Gebbie, Steve Aylett, Leah Moore and John Reppion will be contributing. (Hat tip: Cory Doctorow.)
  • Dark Horse Comics just announced that, in honor of their imminent publication of Drawing Down the Moon: The Art of Charles Vess
in December, they are offering the entire book online for free viewing for an indefinite time. All two hundred-plus pages of Drawing Down the Moon can be found on the Dark Horse website.
  • VIZ Media is now accepting submissions and pitches for original comics. Interesting. I think this is a change in policy and direction.
  • I almost don’t believe this story from Superhero Hype and Variety about Legendary Pictures picking up the film rights to the Warren Ellis series Gravel, just because I would automatically assume Bleeding Cool would have that story first. Tsk, tsk… Rich is slowing down. (Warren: we have just the guy for the role for you. Honest.)
  • And in case you didn’t hear, Archie’s an imaginary bigamist.

The Point Radio Inside WAREHOUSE 13

The Point Radio Inside WAREHOUSE 13

It’s a little like that last scene in INDIANA JONES, but really so much more. SyFy’s newest hit is WAREHOUSE 13 and we begin our backstage tour with actors Eddie McClintock & Joanne Kelly. Plus what’s Warren Ellis up to these days, is there really a MAGNETO movie in the works and a film based on Facebook?

ComicMix Six: Comic Book Folks to #FollowFriday on Twitter

ComicMix Six: Comic Book Folks to #FollowFriday on Twitter

It’s #followfriday on Twitter, and these are some of the comics folks you should be following if you aren’t already doing so…

  1. Warren Ellis – If you’ve ever read anything by him, especially The Authority, Planetary, or Transmetropolitan, it probably won’t surprise you
to learn how angry he can get on his Twitter. What will surprise you—and
probably make you laugh–is how flowery his language can get when he’s on a
tirade. Oh, and he also has a lot of really interesting links to share and
interesting insights on the medium to discuss. Besides, who else do you know
that’ll greet you every morning with “Good morning, sinners?” http://www.twitter.com/WarrenEllis

  2. Ben Templesmith – Possibly the handsomest man in comics, Ben
Templesmith is the Australian-born artist behind Fell (with Warren Ellis) and
several Steve Niles projects, most famously 30 Days Of Night. His Twitter feed
is chock-full of goodies, including insights as to the life of a professional
artist, many interesting links, and a healthy dose of political opinion, if
that’s your thing. He’s still one of the friendliest folks around, too—almost
seven thousand followers, and he’ll often still take the time to answer a quick
question from you here and there. http://www.twitter.com/Templesmith

  3. Bryan Lee O’Malley – The mastermind behind the Scott Pilgrim
series hates just about everything on the Internet and doesn’t mind saying so.
That said, following him is really the best way to get news about the upcoming
Edgar Wright-helmed movie adaptation. Basically, if BLO doesn’t say it, it’s
not official—regardless of what Matt Fraction (www.twitter.com/MattFraction)
    might suggest. http://www.twitter.com/Radiomaru

  4. Brian Michael Bendis – His Twitter feed might be the only
thing the New Avengers scribe has written in the last five years that didn’t
somehow involve Luke Cage or Spider-Woman. What it does include is Bendis’s
take on just about everything going on in the comic book world, along with
reposted links to just about everything Bendis-related going on in the world.
As an added bonus, you’ll get a new appreciation for comic book editors once
you see how bad his grammar and punctuation is. http://www.twitter.com/BRIANMBENDIS

  5. Gail Simone — If Twitter gave out a prize for “crazy
mysterious,” this Wonder Woman writer would surely win it several times over.
Until recently, apart from the occasional fake flamewar with Mark Waid (http://www.twitter.com/MarkWaid),
she mostly appeared, gave an assignment—for example, “TODAY’S ASSIGNMENT:  Fictional convention panels that SHOULD
exist, but never, EVER EVER EVER will” or
“Today’s Assignment: Tweets as sent by participants during epic comic
stories. What did they twitter to friends as it all went down?” —and then vanish
again until the next time. Now, she tweets more regularly, if only to tease Geoff
    Johns about Blackest Night. http://www.twitter.com/GailSimone

  6. ComicMix — Okay, seriously, if you’re not
reading our Twitter feed, what the heck are you waiting for? http://www.twitter.com/ComicMix

ComicMix Quick Picks – May 3, 2009

A weekend window-closing wrap-up:

ComicMix Quick Picks – February 4, 2009

* Personally, I don’t think this cartoon needs a caption. But Michael Cavna does, and he’s running a contest for it– the best one gets the original art. So Write a Caption, Win a Cartoon.

* "Mike Gold is not human." Yeah, we know. (BTW, KC, is your chronology off? I started in ’88 and you were already there, and I started the same week Dooley did.)

* Joystiq has early impressions on Batman: Arkham Asylum.

* I will pay cash if someone will slip this Cornify script onto Warren Ellis’s website. It’ll go along with his kids page.

* Superhero Game: Homespun Superheroes
