Captain America Gains his Peggy Carter

After being turned down by Emily Blunt and possibly others, Marvel Studios issued a release announcing relatively unknown actress Hayley Atwell has been added to the Captain America cast as Peggy Carter.

Atwell is known to some from her work in A&E’s disappointing remake of The Prisoner, but she has also been seen in The Duchess and Brideshead Revisited.

Peggy Carter was introduced as the Star-Spangled Avenger’s love interest when he debuted in Tales of Suspense #64  (April 1965) and was the original spy known as Agent 13. She was later reported to have suffered dementia and was confined to LarkMoore Clinic. Her niece, Sharon Carter, also dubbed Agent 13, is Cap’s enduring romance partner since Tales of Suspense #75 (March 1966).

Marvel Studios announced today that Hayley Atwell has been cast to star as Peggy Carter in the studio’s highly anticipated movie CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER opposite Chris Evans.  In the early comics, Peggy Carter fell in love with Captain America while they fought together in the war effort.  The character will be updated for the feature adaptation.  Joe Johnston will direct the film penned by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely.

Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige will produce CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER.  Alan Fine, Stan Lee, David Maisel and Louis D’Esposito will executive produce.  The film will be released in the US on July 22, 2011 and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.
Atwell will next be seen in PILLARS OF THE EARTH, the 8-part miniseries premiering July 23 on Starz and the TV series THE PRISONER.  Her film credits include THE DUCHESS, BRIDESHEAD REVISITED and CASSANDRA’S DREAM.

In addition to CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER, Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including the highly anticipated sequel, IRON MAN 2, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow on May 7, 2010, THOR on May 6, 2011, and Marvel Studios’ THE AVENGERS on May 4, 2012.

Chris Evans cast as Captain America

Variety reports that square-jawed lady-killer Chris Evans will be under the winged-mask of Captain America for Marvel’s upcoming The First Avenger: Captain America, set to hit theaters next summer.

Also noted from Variety: Evan’s deal looks to be for at least three pictures, not including the already mentioned “Avengers” film set to come out in 2012. Evans will be hurling his shield next to Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, as well as Edward Norton’s green skinned goliath, the Hulk.

The First Avenger: Captain America also has cast the neo-hating turned neo-nazi, Hugo Weaving as the villainous Red Skull.

Of course, comic book fans should not be surprised by Mr. Evan’s turn as a hero, given his lengthy comic book twinged resumé. Starring first as the hot headed Johnny Storm in the less-than-beloved pair of Fantastic Four pictures, Evans will also debut as the alliterated Lucas Lee in the upcoming Scott Pilgrim flick, as well as the jacked-mouth hacker Jake Jensen in the forthcoming Losers movie coming out this April.

J. Michael Stracyznski takes over Superman and Wonder Woman

J. Michael Straczynski, the Academy Award nominated screenwriter of Changeling, creator of Babylon 5, and former writer on Amazing Spider-Man and Thor, will take over the writing on Superman and Wonder Woman starting in July with Superman #701 and Wonder Woman #601, according to the DC Source blog.

JMS talks about taking over the reins here:

To kick off both efforts by appearing in the anniversary issues of
these two characters is a great opportunity, and a good jumping-on
point for readers.

If there’s any other message in this to readers, it’s in these two
characters as icons of hope, that it doesn’t make any difference where
you come from, or where you went to school, or who you are, there’s
hope. That a kid from Jersey with Superman as the icon that kept him
alive for years would one day end up writing the character is as
absoutely unlikely as it is utterly inevitable. And if that’s true for
me, it’s true for you, if you follow your dreams and your passions in
full flight.

No word on art teams yet– one wonders if Gary Frank will stick around and work with JMS again (they previously worked together on Midnight Nation and Squadron Supreme).

Paramount Announces Fourth ‘Mission: Impossible’

Paramount Pictures has gone out of their way to announce Mission: Impossible 4  — what feels like a rushed project, coming out in just over a year.

The film is being described as a reboot, without J.J. Abrams behind the camera and will most likely introduce agents to take over the franchise. It also arrives during a packed May 2011 which already has scheduled Thor (5/6), Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (5/20), and The Hangover 2 (5/26).

HOLLYWOOD, CA (February 9, 2010) – Paramount Pictures announced today that it is making “Mission Impossible IV.” The film, which will be produced by Tom Cruise, J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot Productions and will star Cruise, will be released Memorial Day weekend 2011.

“Tom and J.J. are great talents and we are excited to be working with them to re-launch this legendary franchise,” said Paramount Pictures Chairman & CEO Brad Grey.
 
Screenwriters Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec are attached to write the script, from an original idea by Cruise and Abrams.

The studio, Cruise and Abrams are in now the process of identifying a director for the film.

 Abrams’s last project with Paramount was “Star Trek,” which he produced and directed. The film grossed $385 million globally.  Cruise’s “Mission Impossible” franchise has grossed over 1.4 billion globally.

“Mission Impossible IV” will be co-financed by David Ellison’s Skydance Productions.

Review: ‘Wolverine and the X-Men – Fate of the Future’ on DVD

As one would have expected, Marvel revisited the animated adventures of their merry mutants to capitalize on the anticipated success of the [[[Wolverine]]] feature film. As a result, the fourth iteration is named [[[Wolverine and the X-Men]]] and the first season aired throughout 2009 on Nicktoons. Lionsgate has been dutifully collected handfuls of episodes for single-disc collections with the fourth volume, containing five episodes, being released Tuesday.

While the [[[X-Men]]], their friends and foes are familiar, this has no bearing on the previous animated series or the comic book source material, As a result, we’re getting yet another look at familiar themes and storylines such as the Days of Future Past and Genosha. Unlike the immensely popular 1990s Fox series, this has fewer sub-plots that require episode to episode viewing. On the other hand, there are plenty of sub-plots running through the 26 episodes comprising the first season. There are also dozens of characters to meet and recall and often they arrive unnamed or their powers unspecified. As a result, you’re required to watch knowing which version of the x-verse you’re paying attention to. The only other animated series this ties to is the Hulk Vs. direct-to-DVD as noted when Nick Fury asks Wolverine to have a rematch against the jade giant.

This disc contains “Stolen Lives”, “Hunting Grounds”, “Badlands”, “Code of Conduct” and “Backlash”. Having not seen any of the previous episodes, I would have appreciated a “Previously” recap at the beginning but I quickly figured things out. The first episode focuses on Kristie, the young mutant daughter of Maverick and introduces us to X-23.

The second story skips Wolverine for the most part, focusing instead on the odd friendship of Scarlet Witch and Nightcrawler as they work together to escape Mojo’s World. It also introduces us to Magneto’s other daughter, Polaris. After that, we skip ahead to the devastating future as the descendant and survivors fight the Sentinels for survival. The just-introduced Polaris is revealed to be the sole survivor of Genosha and wanders around wearing dad’s helmet. The storyline is picked up again in the fifth episode, which has the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and the X-Men trying to destroy the Master Mold, to prevent the horrific future from happening.

In between, Wolverine’s backstory is explored in a tale that introduces viewers to the Silver Samurai and Mariko. The battle for control and honor takes up much of the episode and apparently was deemed inappropriate to air in the UK.

Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost, who graduated from Marvel Animation to fine comic book writers, are back and their expertise helps a lot. They’re ably abetted by Greg Johnson, a writer I’m less familiar with. As a result, the stories are strong in the Marvel flavor, heavy on the anti-mutant theme, and replete with characters with some genuine personality. They come across as teens or adults, experienced or tyro.

The animation design is leaner than previous version but they come across inconsistent in size. In some cases, Wolverine is taller than Mystique but still called a runt. Everyone is a little too lean but the overall animation direction is reasonably strong. The best part of the technical side is that the voice cast is sharply superior to the 1990s version.

Other than some commentary, the disc has no extras but does have plenty of trailers including an intriguing glimpse of next year’s [[[Thor: Tales of Asgard]]] direct-to-DVD feature.

Stuart Townsend off ‘Thor’

What is it with Stuart Townsend and characters with swords? First, he leaves the role of Aragorn early in the shooting of  the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and now we hear that he’s out of the role of Fandral in the adaptation of Marvel’s Thor. AP cites that old standby, “creative differences”. Fandral will now be played by Joshua Dallas, who was in the Doctor Who episode “Silence in the Library”.

I can think of a few possibilities:

His swordsmanship isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be.

Director Kenneth Branagh thinks having Townsend leave the production early is some sort of a good luck charm (see LOTR).

Marvel Unveils New Iron Man Armor

As the worlds of film and comics grow ever closer, Marvel this afternoon released this image of Iron Man’s new armor. If it looks awfully similar to the movie version of shellhead, that’s no doubt intentional. Ryan Meinerding, designer on the Iron Man and Thor films helped adapt the movie suit for comics and this debuts in April’s Invincible Iron Man #25.

The series, written by Matt Fraction, has been acclaimed to the point where director Jon Favreau had Fraction consult on the sequel, conveniently due out just weeks later. With a new storyline kicking off, the new mission requires a new kind of armor.

“The inspiration for the new design came from thinking about a sleeker, leaner, tougher Iron Man,” Fraction said in a Marvel press release. “If technology is increasingly getting smaller and lighter it seems like the Iron Man should do the same: ergonomic and aerodynamic. We were looking for something that felt as sleek and glossy as a sports car Tony Stark would covet.  I love what we’ve come up with. It feels like the next evolutionary step in the Iron Man’s design.”
