PRO SE ENTERS THE E-BOOK BUSINESS!

Pro Se Productions announces today that while still putting the Monthly Into Pulp as it has since publishing its first work in August 2010, it now makes its extensive library available in E-book format!  Leading off with veteran Pulp Author Barry Reese’s THE ADVENTURES OF LAZARUS GRAY, Pro Se plans to not only make its current catalog available in coming weeks and months via the Kindle, Nook, and in other digital formats, but it also intends to make its upcoming 2012 calendar available via ebook as well.

“Yes,” Tommy Hancock, Partner in and Editor in Chief of Pro Se Press reports, “This process has taken a while and there’s a few reasons for that.  We originally offered PDFs of our titles and those actually were quite successful, but the requests for Kindle, Nook, and more versions digitally have poured in since day one.  Our biggest hold up was having the staff to produce quality e-books.  We now have that in the person of Russ Anderson, a Pulp author and a vital part of Pulpwork Press as well.  Russ is already at work converting our current books into digital formats, hoping to complete at least one a week for the foreseeable future.”

THE ADVENTURES OF LAZARUS GRAY, the first book entry into Pro Se’s Sovereign City Project features a hero who awakens on the city’s shores with no idea who he is.  Taking the name Lazarus Gray, he forms a team of adventurers to battle the crime, corruption, and evil rampant in Sovereign City.  And its now available for the Kindle here at Amazon and in a variety of formats here at Smashwords!  Hancock states that it will be available from Barnes and Noble for the Nook within the week!

DC isn’t the only publisher betting big on the new generation of tablets — IDW has made more than 30 of their GNs available for the NOOK, including Darwyn Cooke’s Parker adaptations, and works by Joe Hill, Max Brooks, Anne Rice, and Eric Shanower. Unlike DC’s exclusive with Amazon, this doesn’t seem to have pissed off any retail partners…yet.

Continuing to lead the charge of digital comics, IDW Publishing proudly debuted a collection of graphic novels for the new Barnes & Noble NOOK Tablet, the company’s fastest and lightest tablet with the best in HD entertainment. IDW’s initial NOOK entrée features over thirty complete graphic novels, including award-winning books and works by bestselling authors.

“We’re excited to partner with Barnes & Noble to bring IDW graphic novels line to NOOK,” stated Jeff Webber, IDW’s director of ePublishing.

The i’s have it. The “it” they have is Weird Horror Tales, the first of a trilogy of braided horror novels by Michael Vance set in the outré town of Light’s End, Maine. Barnes & Noble Announce Nook Tablet; Launching With Marvel (and ComicMix) Graphic Novels

And the other shoe drops. Marvel Entertainment announced today that the long-anticipated Nook Tablet from Barnes & Noble will offer readers access to  a digital library of Marvel graphic novels.

And the argument goes to the mainstream press:

Amazon, seeking to make its coming Kindle Fire tablet as appealing as possible, negotiated a deal with DC Comics for the exclusive digital rights to a hundred popular graphic novels. Among the series: Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, the Sandman and Watchmen.

Barnes & Noble, with a tablet of its own to nurture, did not like this one bit. Two weeks ago it removed all the copies of the physical volumes from its 1,300 stores, saying it would not carry any book if it were denied the right to sell the digital version.

Books-a-Million, the third-largest bookseller with 231 stores, followed suit last week, making the same argument.

 Michael Vance’s novel, Weird Horror Tales:Light’s End, is “an amazing, page turning suspense thriller”. Artist Eric York turns some ghoulish pages as well.

York is the interior illustrator of Vance’s latest novel. Vance was first attracted by York’s outré, very design oriented, and weirdly beautiful interpretations of the work of world-famous horror writer, H. P. Lovecraft.

“Eric is that rarest of gems,” said Vance, “an original. Since we share a love for Lovecraft’s prose, York’s style seemed a perfect choice for the last novel in my Weird Horror Tales trilogy that was also influenced by Lovecraft’s genius. I was overjoyed by his “deviant” art for my novel!”

York’s distinctive art has also appeared in books, fanzines, and comics including The Fantastical Worlds of H.P. Lovecraft, The Shadow Over Santa Susana, Malafact, Besmirched, Terminal Brain Rot and many others.

“I drew the cover for another of Michael’s books a few years ago [that was published in England],” wrote the artist. “I enjoy his subdued style of horror as well as his creepy locale of Light’s End. I’ve always been
into stories using the common setting of sinister old, small towns, and thought this would be a nice change to collaborate with Michael again. Plus I wanted to draw his morbid old degenerate, Jake Horne.”

York also self-publishes under his Maggot Global Publishing imprint and has published Hungry Maggot, Vermis Rex, Tillinghasts’ Moribund Fairy-Tales, Eldritch Pulp Adventure, the Erebus Tarot, as well as the upcoming Zygote’s Fables, and his 100 plus page graphic novel adaptation of H.P. A sign of something to do with e-books

Here’s the item on sale today at woot: 1 refurbished Barnes & Noble NOOK 3G+WiFi eReader, 16 Level B&W E Ink Display & Color Touchscreen Navigation Panel for $99 plus $5 shipping.

I’m not sure whether this is a sign of eBooks becoming the default, or if it means that new products are coming down the pike, or that Barnes & Noble is in trouble and the Kindle is going to be the default, or what, but it does show that the industry is changing faster and faster.

Having seen some of the new color screens coming out by the end of the year, I think I’m leaning towards inventory reduction… but I can’t be sure. And of course, by writing this, I’m contributing to the uncertainty.

Oh, one other note: woot is owned by… Amazon. Which means that for at least one day, Amazon is selling NOOKs. Now I’m even more confused.
