PRO SE AND BROKENSEA TAKE NEW PULP TO THE NEXT LEVEL!

Pro Se Productions, an up and coming leader in the New Pulp Movement and publisher of New Pulp Magazines, books, and collections, announces today a partnership with Broken Sea Audio Productions, a leading name in New Pulp Audio.   Both companies have brought their impressive talents and abilities together to produce the first ever Pro Se Press Audio Magazines!

Pro Se broke onto the New Pulp scene in 2010 with a line of New Pulp Magazines.  These titles, FANTASY AND FEAR, PECULIAR ADVENTURES, and MASKED GUN MYSTERY, featured a variety of stories, both from professional as well as brand new authors and ran the gamut from horror to hero to mystery to fantasy and beyond.  Although these titles have now been combined in print into the singular title PRO SE PRESENTS, Pro Se plans to continue the three titles in an audio magazine format, thanks in large part to the wonderful people at Broken Sea Audio Productions.

“There’s something,” says Tommy Hancock, Partner and EIC of Pro Se Productions, “about these fantastic New Pulp short stories that just screams to be expressed beyond print.   When you’re reading words written by Ron Fortier, James Palmer, and Van Plexico or in the middle of a Sovereign City scene penned by Barry Reese or Derrick Ferguson or even marveling to the new talents of people like Nancy Hansen, Ken Janssens, Lee Houston, Jr., Megan Smith and more, you can hear the voices in your head.   Likewise, the extremely talented crew at Broken Sea Audio Productions, led by Paul Mannering, have this fantastic art of bringing to life stories, some with characters we all know and others with brand new New Pulp creations.  The actors and readers at BrokenSea breathe voice into pen and ink and make it leap off the page and into a whole new level of imagination.   Because of this, the partnership of these two fantastic groups as well as the merging of the work they do is a great next step in the evolution of New Pulp.”



Hancock also says that plans for both future Audio Mags as well as Audio Books of Pro Se’s line of novels and collections are definitely in process and will be announced in the near future.

The first three issues of each Audio Magazine are now available for sale at www.pulpmachine.blogspot.com as downloads.   “Although consideration was given to producing CD versions of these fantastic works,” Hancock states, “and we will have special CD versions available for public appearances and conventions in 2012 and beyond, we felt that with the advent of MP3 Players and other technology more attuned to playing a file instead of a CD, that this was the best and most efficient way to deliver this great new product.”   Once purchased, Pro Se will send the buyer a link to download the issue(s) the customer has bought within twenty four hours of purchase.

Priced at $7.50 per issue, each magazine is over 4 to 6 hours of New Pulp Audiobook entertainment.  Each magazine is read by a single reader, but the readers provide various voices and show a tremendous control of emotion and tone in each story, adding to the power and pleasure of listening to each tale.  This combined with the wonderful work of Broken Sea Producer Chris Barnes makes Pro Se’s line of New Pulp Audio Mags a definite must have for any fan of Action/Adventure/Heroic/Genre Fiction.

They’ve got us blushing…but that’s not going to stop us from sharing their thoughts with you!

On the Retroist website, Vic Sage writes:
“I began listening to Python Isle at my computer. It just didn’t feel right so I popped out the CD and placed it in my Emerson “old time radio” replica, laid back on the floor, and thrilled to the exploits of Doc Savage and his compatriots! I’m hard pressed to think of a better way to spend an evening as the sun starts to set, the room illuminated by the soft yellow glow of the radio dial as Michael McConnohie’s soothing voice reads Will Murray’s prose, both mingling flawlessly together to transport me to a pulp world that I sometimes wish I could do more than just visit. But it isn’t just “Python Isle” that’s drawing rave reviews. At Mystery Scene Magazine, Dick Lochte has written a review of “The Adventures of Doc Savage”:
“About 25 years ago, two tales featuring pulp-master Lester Dent’s 1930s adventure hero Doc Savage were adapted by producer Roger Rittner and author Will Murray for a rip-snorting 13-part series that aired on National Public Radio. The result, commercially unavailable until now, is an entertaining replication of radio’s golden age, when a muscled renaissance Man of Bronze and his gifted but eccentric crew could do battle with seemingly unconquerable foes, wind up in trouble at the end of each episode and just as easily escape in the next. In the seven-part adaptation of the 1934 adventure “Fear Cay” Doc and his gang fly to a dangerous Caribbean Isle where they fight a wily old bird who claims to be the 130-year-old discoverer of the Fountain of Youth. The other story, presented in six chapters, finds our heroes in Indo-China battling baddies and deadly serpents in the city of “The Thousand-Headed Man”. The stories and the performances by Daniel Chodos as Doc and the other cast members are properly a bit over the top. It’s good clean fun.”

Review: “Limitless”

What would you do if you could fully tap your brain’s capabilities? Every generation or so, the question is pondered, thanks to the latest breakthroughs or studies in neuroscience. It makes for an interesting discussion and sometimes, brilliant works such as Flowers for Algernon (the great book by Daniel Keyes, and Charly the movie with Cliff Robertson). The most recent addition to this sub-genre of fiction is The Dark Fields, a novel by Alan Glynn, which became the basis for the movie [[[Limitless]]], which was released on DVD this week by Twentieth-Century Fox Home Entertainment.

If you were Eddie Morra, you apparently turn into something unlike yourself. We meet him teetering atop a high-rise as people bang on his security door to enter his apartment fortress. Flashing back, we learn what happened to turn a slacker into a genius. Leslie Dixon’s screenplay, which makes huge changes from the novel, shows us a sad sack, but a sad sack with a novel contract, unable to write. After months of not writing and living like a slob, he meets his book editor girlfriend Lindy only to be dumped.

A chance meeting with the brother of his ex-wife introduces him to the experimental drug NZT-48 which clarifies his thinking, making him hyper-aware of the world around him and focuses his mind, allowing him to accomplish more in a day than he has in six months. We see him write the overdue first chapters and actually hand printed pages to his stunned editor (mostly because editors so rarely see printed anything until the final book, but I digress).

The brother-in-law winds up dead and Eddie locates and steals the remaining supply of the drug and begins using them with increasing regularity to take his newfound powers of concentration and improve his life. He masters the piano, learns multiple languages, can see trends and capitalize on them– and here’s where both book and movie begin to veer off course. Rather than tap the creative energies that led to Eddie’s career, he somehow switches gears to become a day trader to get rich and then moves into the financial world. Meantime, his drug dependency grows and weird things begin to happen to him. (more…)

Radio Archives has just released an audio version of Will Murray’s classic Doc Savage novel and it’s the same level of high quality that listeners have learned to associate with the company. Production values are top notch and the narrator (Michael McConnohie) does a fine job with story, capturing the essence of each character. The story itself leads Doc and his crew to the titled island, where a mystery that dates back to the Bible awaits. It’s a fine addition to the Doc Savage mythos and “feels” right. The concept was from Lester Dent but Murray does an admirable job remaining true to the overall style while also inserting a few of his own ideas and stylistic choices. I read this novel in book form upon its release but had never gone back to it since: I was pleasantly surprised how much I remembered as the narration carried me through.

Well worth your money!

I give it 5 stars out of 5.

Spotlight on The Spider

His name is Richard Wentworth III. Man-about-town, dilettante of the arts, and engaged to the beautiful Nita Van Sloan, it would seem at first glance that he is nothing more than another non-productive member of the upper crust – a wealthy young man preoccupied with casual and frivolous pursuits. But, in reality, Richard Wentworth is completely devoted to the pursuit of justice for the downtrodden, no matter what the cost to himself or to his loved ones. Secretly donning a tattered black hat and cape, a wig of stringy hair, sinister face makeup, and strapping on a pair of .45 automatics, Wentworth prowls the streets of New York as The Spider, chasing down criminal masterminds bent on enslaving or destroying humanity.

The pulp magazines of the 1930s and 1940s produced a number of memorable heroes, but none were as action-packed or violent as The Spider. For neatly a decade, he was the self-proclaimed scourge of the Underworld, doling out his own particular brand of justice and imprinting his dreaded red Spider seal on the foreheads of those he killed for the good of mankind. Unlike Doc Savage, who radiated health and well being, or The Shadow, who worked covertly with the police to solve crimes, The Spider was an obsessed loner, imbued with the spirit and the lawlessness of a vigilante. Offering a less optimistic and more
defiant take on the challenges of the Great Depression, the villains in the novels of The Spider were equally obsessive, committing acts of destruction on a massive scale. Essentially terrorists, they thought nothing of sinking huge ocean liners, toppling skyscrapers, and wiping out entire towns with germ warfare – and their motivation for such acts was often nothing more than sheer evil for its own sake.


The stories of The Spider plunge you headfirst aboard an emotional roller coaster, with scarcely a moment’s pause for respite. Oriental death traps, treacherous and alluring women, and rabid, machine-gun toting gangsters are all part of a typical day for this beleaguered hero. And, to make things worse, Wentworth is frequently suspected of being the dreaded Spider, his home is periodically destroyed, and his servants and friends – particularly the long-suffering Nita Van Sloan – kidnapped, tied-up, and threatened with horrible torturous deaths.

Doc Savage “White Eyes” Creative Team Biographies

Will Murray (author) is the literary agent for the estate of Lester Dent, and the author of over 50 novels, including several posthumous Doc Savage collaborations with series originator Lester Dent, among them “Python Isle”, “White Eyes”, and his latest novel “Desert Demons”, soon to be released by Altus Press.

Roger Rittner (producer, director) has written, produced, and directed specials and multi-part series for National Public Radio, including the drama series “Darkness”, the mystery/macabre series “Midnight”, “The Adventures of Doc Savage”, and the musical special “Charlie Sent Me!” Other radio projects have been heard on stations KMPC, KFI, and KGBS in Los Angeles. Roger created and directed The Variety Arts Radio Theatre, live recreations of classic radio drama, for 10 years at the Variety Arts Center in Los Angeles.

Richard Epcar (narrator) is well known to animation, anime, and gaming fans, having voiced over 300 characters in his lengthy career. He is “Batou” in “Ghost in the Shell” and he’s also featured in a new series from Nickelodeon, “Airbender: The Legend of Korra’. But Rathbone’s departure from the series in 1946 resulted in another actor taking on the part: Tom Conway, the suave and handsome leading man who had recently been seen as The Falcon in the popular RKO movie series.
