ComicMix Six: Top Six Movies of 2014
3. [[[Big Hero 6]]] – Big Hero 6 is so good that I wish it could go back in time and be shoved in the face of every person who thought Disney purchasing Marvel would ruin the company. Disney dug in to the depths of Marvel’s file of forgotten bland characters and came away with one of the best children’s films released in years. They took a borderline racist comic book and turned it into a beautiful movie with a transcendent character in Baymax. Disney Animation is on a run the last four years (beginning with Tangled) that deserves to be mentioned in the same breath with their 90s renaissance or, frankly, any other set of films. It’s been such a pleasure to consume Disney’s output this decade.
2. [[[Gone Girl]]] – What if Ben Affleck is the greatest film talent of his generation? He had a bad run in the early 2000s but, honestly, who was really at their best then? He’s become an exceptional director and while he wasn’t responsible for Gone Girl it was his performance that made the movie exceptional. I don’t say that to take anything away from Rosamund Pike, Neil Patrick Harris, Carrie Coon, or Tyler Perry but any of them could be replaced by the next best audition and the movie would probably come out about the same. Affleck is irreplaceable here; it’s a transcendent performance. The other special part of the movie is the score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross that took scenes from a little tense or a little creepy to skin crawling nightmares.
