ComicMix Six: Top Six Movies of 2014
1. [[[Interstellar]]] – Film always feels like it’s in a crisis; that some outside factor is going to make it so no one ever sits in a theater again. It’s been television, it’s been the VCR, it’s been HDTV and now it’s the Internet. The film industry typically responds by changing something about their formats be it to Cinemascope or 3D or any of dozens of other gimmicks. The next time Hollywood is having one of these they should just watch Interstellar. I can’t imagine this movie holding up in any setting but theatrically. Christopher Nolan made a gorgeous movie and a movie that needs the fantastic scale and blistering audio that is simply beyond the reach of most people’s living rooms. Nolan speaks the visual language of our shared science fiction past and uses it to build something special, it was always such a delight to look at. He also got amazing performances from Nolan repertoire performers Michael Caine and Anne Hathaway along with newcomers Jessica Chastain and a wonderful turn by Matt Damon. This doesn’t even mention Matthew McConaughey’s capping off a year that also saw Dallas Buyers Club and True Detective and might be the most surprising year in the history of media. Interstellar was the most unforgettable, most daring, movie I saw this year.
