10 Marvel Series That That Should Be Revived… Or Should They?

10 Marvel Series That That Should Be Revived… Or Should They?

Even if you’re the sort of comics fan who only dips a toe in the murky waters of industry news, it’s hard not to get soaked by the Merry Marvel Marketing Machine these days — especially when it comes to the InterWebs.

What’s surprising, however, is that the crew over at Marvel.com is providing some genuinely interesting and/or fun content every now and then, and not just treating their website as a place to post press releases. (Although the constant barrage of "Who Do You Trust" promos is starting to make my teeth hurt.) If you can wade through all of the Skrull hype, there are some decent interviews and fun features to be found at the "House of Ideas" online HQ — and this one, a list of 10 series that Marvel’s "Secret Cabal" would like to revive, is one of them.

Why It Should Be Brought Back: "Does this really need any explanation? Enchantress! Doom! Galactus! Roller Skates! A movie!!! Who else in the Marvel U has had a biopic? No one! Canceled right when it was getting good—and after being trained by the X-Men…and defeating them—the exploits of Alison Blaire were carried on in the pages of UNCANNY X-MEN until she ran off to settle down. But this songbird is a free spirit and she must fly. Her powers have never properly been used to their greatest extent, nor has Marvel’s only diva been given her real chance to—pun alert—shine. I know why this caged bird sings…she needs her ongoing series!!!" –Secret Cabal member RunawayJ
Spotlight Comic: UNCANNY X-MEN #130 Dazzler makes her star-studded debut, aiding the X-Men against the Hellfire Club.

Even though I’m not eagerly anticipating a Dazzler revival, I admire the tenacity, RunawayJ. Here’s hoping you get your wish.

Matthew Vaughn to Direct ‘Kick-Ass’ Movie

Matthew Vaughn to Direct ‘Kick-Ass’ Movie

Mark Millar’s Kick-Ass hasn’t even released its second issue and it’s already supposedly headed to the big screen courtesy of Matthew Vaughn, the director of Layer Cake and Stardust.

Vaughn, who was attached to X-Men: The Last Stand before Brett Ratner took over and who is currently attached to the film adaptation of Thor, will be writing and directing the adaptation of Millar’s latest. Joining him on writing duties will be Jane Goldman, his partner on the Stardust script.

Kick-Ass is the story of 15-year old Dave Lizewski, a dweeby kid who decides to take on the mantle of a superhero despite having absolutely no powers or combat training. Predictably, he gets the crap knocked out of him regularly. The series features art by John Romita Jr. and is published by Marvel’s ICON imprint.

Iron Man and Wolverine Animated Shows Coming to Nicktoons Network

Iron Man and Wolverine Animated Shows Coming to Nicktoons Network

Iron Man and Wolverine are no strangers when it comes to animation. Both of them have been the stars of animated programs in the past and now both of of them will get a chance to return to the medium thanks to the new popularity afforded to them by upcoming big-budget, live-action films.

Wolverine and the X-Men and Iron Man: The Animated Series will debut in the early part of 2009 with 26 half-hour episodes each on Nicktoons Network.

The plot of Wolverine and the X-Men is as follows:

The story begins as an explosive event shatters the lives of the X-Men and takes away their mentor, Professor X. The beaten heroes, including Beast, Storm, Cyclops and Nightcrawler, walk away from it all but then they are given a rare glimpse into the future, where they see a world in utter ruin … ruled by giant destructive robots. They discover the world has spiraled out of control because the X-Men have given up. So now the most legendary of all X-Men, Wolverine, must take the lead on the ultimate mission — to prevent the world’s destruction — while fending off enemies Magneto and The Brotherhood.

As for Iron Man’s show, the plot roughly follows that of the comics, just with Tony Stark as a teenager instead of a middle-aged alcoholic:

Tony Stark, heir to a billion-dollar corporation, lives a life of luxury, free to pursue his chief interests — seeking extreme thrills, solving scientific mysteries and creating mind-boggling inventions. But everything goes horribly wrong when a tragic accident robs Tony of his father and nearly costs him his own life. Now dependent on his own impressive technology for survival and dedicated to battling corruption, Tony must reconcile the pressure of teenage life with the duties of a Super Hero. Inside his remarkable invention, Tony Stark is geared for high-speed flight, high-tech battles and high-octane adventure! He is Iron Man.

Will a new generation of children tune into to the action packed adventures of Iron Man and Wolverine or will they stick to their precious little anime programs? Only time will tell in this battle to capture young minds and advertising dollars.

ComicMix at WWLA: The Mondo Marvel Panel

ComicMix at WWLA: The Mondo Marvel Panel

Wrapping up our coverage of this weekend’s Wizard World LA convention, we have this report from Sunday’s Mondo Marvel panel at the Los Angeles Convention center.

Like the X-Men panel, leading the discussion again this time is Marvel Comics marketing guru Jim McCann. Once things settled down a bit and got organized, he introduced the distinguished panel of Marvel creators including Matt Fraction, Chris Gage, Aubrey Sitterson and Charles Knauf.

Knauf, who is currently co-writing Iron Man: Agent of SHIELD, said of the book, "It’s kind of interesting to write the most hated man in the Marvel Universe. I can’t wait till the movie comes out; it’s going to bring a lot of attention to the book."

Among Knauf’s future plans for the book are the introduction of a new "femme fatale" and an attempt to return Iron Man to his "hero status." He will also be trying to make the book "a little more fun."

"The flaws are what make him so great," chimed in Fraction, who’s also writing an Iron Man title: Invincible Iron Man. Said Fraction: "I’m looking forward to sending Iron Man on a big redemptive arc. He is his own arch-rival. I’m looking forward to grinding him to dust and seeing where he ends up," said Fraction.

Next, McCann turned to Chris Gage who is currently working on Avengers: The Initiative with Dan Slott — which has issue #10 at comic’s shops now. According to Gage, Issue #11 will feature the Mighty Avengers and Gage also said fans of the New Warriors may want to check it out, too, "just in case."

ComicMix at WWLA: The Screenwriter’s Panel

ComicMix at WWLA: The Screenwriter’s Panel

Sunday, Day Two at Wizard World in LA and this time around its the Screenwriter’s panel. Moderator Rickey Purdin introduced a distinguished group of successful screenwriters including Mark Verheiden, Carl Ellsworth, John Cox and Zak Penn. With the intros finished, Purdin launched into a short video montage featuring clips from some of the projects the members of the panel had written.

Some of these clips included scenes from The Mask, X-Men 2, Disturbia, Smallville, Red Eye and Battlestar Galactica. Following the clips, Purdin started in on the questions for the panel.

First up, how each of the writers got their various starts in the "business."

Cox started it off saying that, infortunately, he didn’t have a “sexy story" to tell. Instead, like many others, he went to film school with the intention of being a director. However, he soon found out that directing was “too much like working for a living" and decided to switch to screenwriting.

“My story is pretty sexy,” joked Penn. “I was a stripper for a couple of years. It’s a weird job. It was in a female strip club and I was the only guy there, and I stood out.”

"No, I’m joking. Obviously," he continued. "Actually, I got really lucky and wrote Last Action Hero pretty much right out of college and then sold it pretty fast. So that was it for me."

ComicMix at WWLA: The X-Men Panel

Day Two at Wizard World LA and this time around it’s the X-Men Panel, hosted by Marvel Marketing Honcho Jim McCann. Featured on the panel are X-Force co-writers and "life partners" Chris Yost and Craig Kyle, as well as Matt Fraction, Marvel editor Aubrey Sitterson and X-Factor writer Peter David. Young X-Men writer Marc Guggenheim ran a bit late but managed to phone in and confirm, via speakerphone, that he would be arriving shortly.

And so, with introductions over, McCann went right into the announcements and the slideshow.

The first slide showed three of the "Divided We Stand" titles which include X-Force, Cable and X-Men Legacy. Seeing the slide, McCann jokingly referred to Cable as "Two men, two natural arms, and a baby."

Sitterson then chimed in and talked about X-Men: Legacy, saying "There is a nostalgic aspect to it, but it’s also a story picking up directly from ‘Messiah Complex.’" He continued: "X-Men Legacy picks up what’s going on with Professor X after he takes a bullet to the brain. We’re checking in with these giants of the Marvel mutant universe. Gambit will be among those that show up in the series."

Next, McCann let the audience know about the current story arc of Uncanny X-Men — particularly why everyone seems to be heading for San Francisco. "The San Francisco stuff is not just for fun, this is definitely leading up to something," he said. ‘It all makes sense what Brubaker is doing."

Paramount Snaps Up ‘Harbinger’ Comic Book Series

Paramount Snaps Up ‘Harbinger’ Comic Book Series

According to Variety, Paramount Pictures has acquired the rights to the Valiant comic book series Harbinger, which will be made into a live-action feature. The feature, which is being developed as a possible vehicle for director Brett Ratner, will be produced by Alexandra Milchan, Jay Stern and Ratner and may go under the MTV Films banner.

Harbinger, created in the ’90s by Jim Shooter, was a hit when it was first released and concerns humans with extraordinary powers and abilities that can be unlocked by so-called "Omega" harbingers. One of these humans, teenager Pete Stancheck (aka "Sting"), is able to realize this potential under the instructiion of his mentor, Toyo Harada.

But once Harada starts down an evil path and Pete learns it was his mentor who was responsible for a friend’s death, Pete is determined to bring his former teacher to justice. So, with the help of friends Kris, Zephyr, Flamingo and Torque, Pete begins his quest to take down Harada and the evil Harbinger Foundation.

According to the article, after directing X-Men: The Last Stand, Ratner was looking for a superhero franchise to start from scratch and found it with Harbinger. Producer Milchan was also very pleased to find Harbinger and be able to bring it to Ratner:

"The movie is in the vein of a young ‘Blade Runner,’ as this 17-year- old gifted kid helps other kids tap into these parts of their brains," Milchan said.

No word yet on potential casting for the film or a start date. But when there is, we’ll bring it to you.

New ‘Wanted’ Trailer and Pics Hit the Web

New ‘Wanted’ Trailer and Pics Hit the Web

When I first heard about the upcoming big-screen adaptation of Mark Miller’s Wanted, I was, as I usually am in these situations, skeptical. Hollywood’s treatment of comic books has ranged greatly over the years and produced some seriously bad movies such as Daredevil, Ghost Rider and The League of Extrordinary Gentlemen.

However, to be fair, Hollywood also gets it right sometimes, like they did with Sin City, Batman Begins and X-Men. So, when I heard about the Wanted movie I was hopeful that this one could potentially join the ranks of "good" films  — that is, until I saw the first trailer. And now, there’s another one — which doesn’t really make things any better.

I’m not sure what movie they think they’re making, but it isn’t Wanted — at least not the one that I read. Instead, we’re treated to what appears to be your standard action fare including guns, babes, car chases and explosions galore. Don’t get me wrong, I like all those things — especially babes that take on the form of Angelina Jolie.

What I don’t like is Hollywood buying the rights to a comic book just to use the title and not making a movie actually based, in some part, on that comic book. Sure, Wanted might have things about it that may be difficult to adapt for the movies — like an interesting bad guy made out of a certain waste material — but still, those are the things that made Wanted interesting, unique and fun in the first place.

In the alternate reality where I run everything, this kind of thing wouldn’t happen. Sadly, we don’t live in that world and instead have to deal with things like this. Well, enough of my ranting, head on over to MySpace if you want to see the new trailer and stills from the movie supposedly based on the Wanted comic book. Enjoy.
