Seth Green Wants to Direct ‘The Freshmen’

Seth Green Wants to Direct ‘The Freshmen’

"I’m gonna direct The Freshmen, which is a comic book that my friend Hugh Sterbakov and I created", Seth Green told Moviehole.  "We have two graphic novels in the marketplace, and we conceived it as a feature.  But that’ll be the movie that I direct."

"It is kids – it’s Revenge of the Nerds meets X-Men.  It’s kids in their first year of college, their first days of college, leaving the nest for the first time, awkwardly discovering their own identifies, trying to cast off all the things that have been placed on them throughout their scholastic career, and define their own identity in college.  And these kids are – you know, because of the overflow of the enrollment, they’re put into the science building, where they don’t even have permanent housing. And, you know, now this is a makeshift group they’re supposed to be best friends with, and they find themselves at a fraternity party where they are the butt of every joke and humiliated beyond their imagination.  And then they go back to the dorm and kind of mull over the notion of being trapped in this place for the next four years.  And then they are the victims of a scientific event, which gives them borderline useless superpowers.  So now in addition to being these outcasts of the outcasts, they are additi
onally alienated, with a physical deformity."

The Top Cow series debuted in 2005 and has since seen two six-issue miniseries which have both been collected plus a Yearbook and most recently a Summer Vacation Special. Despite its success as a comic book, Green recognizes that he’ll need some help getting this turned into a film.

"You know, it’ll probably need a studio for release.  My estimation is to make this movie the way we want to make it, we’ll need independent financing.  But the nice thing about independent financing is, you know, a small-budget film is $35 million these days.  And that’s about what we’d need to make it".

Comic Mix Six – The Six Worst Comic Book Video Games

Comic Mix Six – The Six Worst Comic Book Video Games

Comic books, admittedly, don’t have a great history when itcomes to video game adaptations.  Hell, most games based on licensed properties have a certain stigma about them.  It probably stems from the fact that theyfeel like a cheap cash-in…a way to make a quick buck on a popular fad such asmovies, TV shows, and yes, comics.  Now,that’s not to say ALL comic book games are bad, no; but the genre does have itsshare of stinkers.  Out of all thepossible crap-fests out there, these are the top six games that should never beallowed near your console of choice…EVER.

Marvel’s Uncanny X-Men– 1989: NES

Back in the heyday of the Nintendo Entertainment System, they were making games for EVERYTHING. At the time, publisher LJN held the rights to the Marvel license, andsadly, churned out turd after turd.  Oneof their biggest steaming piles was this mess, based on Marvel’s MightyMutants.  What made this game sobad?  Well, sadly, the technology of theday seems to be the biggest culprit.  Thegame took a top-down view of the action, and since there was only so much youcould show in 8-bit, character details were pretty much non-existent.  That, combined with the muddy, dirty colorsof the backgrounds and you were lucky you could see anything at all, let alonewhich character you had selected. Nothing was recognizable, despite the fact that it had a decent sized rosterselected from the books.  Thankfully, it’sone of the few bad marks on an otherwise mostly successful game franchise.

Fantastic Four – 1997:Playstation

Ugh.  When you talkabout ugly games, two system generations ago, we had some DOGS.  3D graphics were all the rage, and polygoncounts were climbing higher and higher. Sadly, they still couldn’t figure out that muddy background thing, andso stuff tended to blend together – badly. At least this time you could see what was happening…but it wasn’tpretty.  Take a tried and true gameplaystyle, affectionately known as the “beat ‘em up”, and add comic’s firstfamily.  What could go wrong?  Well, how about poor control, terrible plotand just plain shoddy gameplay?  First, the game is about the Fantastic FOUR…so you have Mr. Fantastic, InvisibleWoman, Human Torch, The Thing and…She-Hulk? Wouldn’t that be FIVE?  Then, you have repetitive, lazy combat (anormal pitfall for the “beat ‘em up”) of miscellaneous enemies that are largein number and small in variety.  Add to thatthe poor hit detection, lousy control response and just a general sense of “whybother?” and you have this mighty gem.  Fantastic, indeed.

Breaking: Brett Ratner to Kill ‘Conan’

Breaking: Brett Ratner to Kill ‘Conan’

Brett Ratner has unsheathed his cinematic broadsword to impale the tender teat of the much beloved barbarian, Conan.

Ain’t It Cool News reports that "it appears to be official that Brett Ratner is directing [Conan]." According to the Web site, the film’s scribe Howard McCain (Outlander) "had some big plans for how to structure the film," drawing inspirations from the original Robert Howard stories rather than the John Milius directed Conan the Barbarian.

"I could tell the material was in the right hands," says AICN’s Moriarty of McCain after the two met earlier this year. But with the news of Ratner’s involvement, Moriarty describes his excitement level as falling "through the floor."

"Oh, Brett… why do you want to hurt me? Why do you want to make this movie?" writes Moriarty. "Please, please, please tell me it’s because you have a genuine passion for the material and not just because it’s a start date and a financing package that’s ready to go. Please tell me that you really care about the character and its history, and not that it’s just ‘Hey, I recognize that name.’"

Ratner is also attached to direct God of War, Playboy, Hong Kong Phooey, Beverly Hills Cop, Guitar Hero, Denver the Last Dinosaur, Captain Planet and a remake of X-Men: The Last Stand. Okay, those last three are fake, but let’s get serious for a moment. Brett Ratner directing God of War? Okay, fine. The property hasn’t been around long enough to be seriously offensive. Playboy, Guitar Hero? Screw it, go bananas, video games and sexy women sound right up your alley.

But Conan? Good freaking gravy. It’s bad enough that Ratner’s poised to spread his film feces all over Axel Foley’s face, now we have to watch the director hack away at what should be a truly incredible movie. Honestly, how does Ratner have all this time to ruin our childhood memories? He’s attached to direct six different movies right now. For reemphasis, let’s quote the late Heath Ledger’s Joker: "Six!"

Clearly Ratner has perfected cloning technology. The world will soon be swarming with millions of his Rat-creatures, sucking out man brains like so much fruit punch and repopulating the human race with his genetically mutated army.

Either that, or Ratner’s a Highlander and has been consuming other Highlanders’ powers for centuries, in which case all we need to do is collectively chop off his head. With the unified rage of the fan community, that might not be so hard to pull off.

ABC Picks Up More ‘Eli Stone’

ABC Picks Up More ‘Eli Stone’

It’s a good year for Marc Guggenheim. He’s got a brand new comic series at Marvel with Young X-Men and he’s one of three co-writers for the upcoming Green Lantern film at Warner Bros. Now comes word from The Hollywood Reporter that television series Eli Stone, which Guggenheim executive produces, is getting four extra scripts.

Stone, on its second season, received the order on the evening before its premiere on Tuesday night. The trade indicates that such a move shows confidence in the season’s new creative direction. We Alias fans know better: Victor Garber likely held the studio at gunpoint and forced the pick up. Gotta love Jack Bristow.

"It’s an incredible vote of confidence," Guggenheim tells EW.com. "I had told [ABC] that in order to keep production rolling [beyong Eli‘s initial 13-episode order], I would need to know by Wednesday [if they wanted more]. I figured at the very least that would give them a day’s worth of ratings to analyze. And they were like, ‘Nope, we’ll just order them now.’"

The show centers on lawyer Eli Stone who becomes a modern-day prophet after receiving precognitive visions. Jonny Lee Miller, Natasha Henstridge, Loretta Devine, and Victor Garber star. Former Dawson’s Creek and Batman Begins star Katie Holmes will guest star on next Tuesday’s episode.

Rothman Discusses Further Projects

Rothman Discusses Further Projects

The third part of IESB’s interview with Fox co-chairman Tom Rothman has hit the internet. The studio bigwig unveils a great amount of information, both concrete and speculative, about many of Fox’s hottest properties. We’ve got the breakdown below:

Independence Day 2
"We would love to do it," Rothman states. "It’s really a matter of [original director] Rolan [Emmerich], it’s up to Roland. He knows that we’d love to do it. I don’t think there is a script but there have been a lot of ideas .. any day that Roland wanted to do [ID4 2], we would be very excited to do it because I think, yes, that story definitely can and should continue."

Predator 3
Rothman says he’d be open to a reboot without Arnold, but is skeptical of a third film starring the governator. "Just give [Arnold Schwarzenegger] my number," Rothman says. "Tell him as soon as he gets the state budget signed to call me."

Silver Surfer
Any chance of a Silver Surfer film within three years? "Yes," answers Rothman, "We are trying to do a stand alone Silver Surfer movie."

The SIMS
"It’s in development," Rothman reveals. "It’s being developed closely with the game maker. I know the guys who make the game are working hard on developing the script but it hasn’t gotten up to my level yet."

X-Files
Surprisingly, Rothman is open to a third film. "It’s really up to Chris, David [Duchovny] and Gillian [Anderson]," Rothman says. Regarding the recent film’s poor box office numbers, Rothman defends it by calling it "the film that Chris wanted to do. He was determined to do a stand alone film, a film that wasn’t dependent upon the mythology. His interest in making the movie, was in the characters and in their relationship, not the mythology."

X-Men Origins: Wolverine
"[The film] is pretty dark," says Rothman of Wolverine‘s tone. He also continues to say that Deadpool plays an "integral part" in the movie, and that the CG work being used is "state of the art." As for the prospect of a Deadpool film, "we will have to see."

Gambit on ‘Wolverine’

Gambit on ‘Wolverine’

Taylor Kitsch is breaking out from under the Friday Night Lights to play on the big screen in next May’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine from 20th Century Fox. Kitsch plays Remy LeBeau, commonly known as the smooth-talking mutant called Gambit. The actor spoke with Media Blvd about his role in the film.

"He’s just another comic book character that has kinetic energy," Kitsch describes of Gambit. "It’s a fun role. You’ll have fun watching it."

Kitsch admits that he was largely unfamiliar with the character before working on Wolverine, but has since gained a fondness for the heart-breaking antihero.

"I love the character, I love the powers, and I love what they did with him," Kitsch says. "I didn’t know that much [about the role], but in my experience, it was a blessing to go in and create my take on him."

At the moment, Kitsch is best known as Tim Riggins on NBC’s Friday Night Lights. That’s bound to change in a few short months when the X-movie is released.

"I haven’t [been] bombarded yet for the X-Men stuff," Kitsch admits. "I’ve been told enough about [X-Men fans] that I’m excited for it. I feel the project went incredibly well, and I’m excited to see the result."

For Kitsch, the biggest perk of filming Wolverine was meeting Logan himself. The actor calls Hugh Jackman a huge influence in his life as both an actor and as a person.

"He’s incredibly disciplined and free," Kitsch describes Jackman. "He’s just this person that’s so grounded and so open that you question whether it’s real or not. I’ve met nobody like him."

Some years ago, Lost‘s Josh Holloway was said to be in talks to play the Ragin’ Cajun in X-Men: The Last Stand. He pulled out due to TV commitments, but was linked to return if a fourth X-Men flick ever got off the ground. The part eventually went to Kitsch.

"The reason we didn’t use Gambit was because in a sense his persona is a bit like Wolverine in that he’s got attitude and his power is not quite as exciting as the others," said Lauren Shuler Donner, producer of both X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, in an interview in 2006.

"That’s why we went to Nightcrawler," she continues, "because he looked different than everybody else and he had a great power."

For someone who doesn’t speak too kindly about ol’ Remy, it’s a bit surprising that the character wound up in Wolverine‘s solo film. Guess you can only stay away from that sexy gumbo for so long, right?!

Shuler-Donner Sings ‘Wolverine’s’ Praises

Shuler-Donner Sings ‘Wolverine’s’ Praises

Producer Lauren Shuler Donner spoke with Coming Soon about next May’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine and she admitted the film owes a lot to 2001’ Wolverine: Origins miniseries.

“I guess its closer to the first X-Men in tone,” she said, “because it’s a little darker, but there’s a lot of action. It’s his origin story. It’s really good. I’ve been in the editing room the last couple of weeks and I think that it’s good and that audiences are going to like it. But it’s a little darker.

“There’s an X-Men: Origins that some of it is pulled from, and then it’s sort of an amalgamation of some of them. But X-Men: Origins sort of goes back into his young, young past, and we started there.”

She also confirmed that Ryan Reynolds is terrific as Deadpool and she’s eyeing a possible spin-off for the merc with a mouth. “I hope so. I really hope so. He’s so good at it.”

Shuler-Donner showered praise on director Gavin Hood, saying, “I like taking someone out of the indie world and bringing someone into the action world because it grounds the movie. It gives it a reality. It gives it an emotional core, and then you can have as much fun and action in it as you wants.”

Where Have All The Editors Gone?

Where Have All The Editors Gone?

Something is going on in comic books. Have you noticed? It’s been happening for a few years now. For some reason, certain comics are not making sense with the rest of the established universe and history. For some reason, things that don’t make sense have been running rampant throughout the fictional realities of DC and Marvel.

Have you noticed it? Sure you have. I’m not the only one, right?

Have you checked out DC Decisions #2? It’s very interesting. Guy Gardner is on Earth rather than Oa. And Power Girl is around instead of still trapped on the new Earth-2. Does this story take place before the current JSA storyline? Or afterward? It would be nice to be told in a brief footnote.

Then there’s the recent Hawkman Special where Carter Hall was told that his memories of being the Ancient Egyptian Prince Khufu were a lie and it basically was said that Khufu couldn’t have existed. Okay, um, wait a second. Black Adam and the wizard Shazam were both there and lived alongside Khufu. And the JSA actually went on a time travel mission a couple of years ago and worked with Khufu against a younger Vandal Savage. How can all of that be explained by false memories? Has the entire JSA been infected with identical delusions?

‘The Avengers’ get Assembled & Animated

‘The Avengers’ get Assembled & Animated

Marvel Comics sent out a press release this morning announcing that production has begun on a new animated series, The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes

Film Roman (King of the Hill) has begun working on the 26 30-minute episodes which will air on television in 2011, in the wake of The First Avenger: Captain America and The Avengers live-action films scheduled for that summer. Ciro Nieli will produce the show for the studio.  He’s no stranger to action considering his work on Super Robot Monkey Team Hyper Force Go! and Teen Titans. Christopher Yost will be script editor and his credits include Iron Man Armored Adventures and Fantastic Four: World’s Greatest Heroes.

As a result, there’s little surprise that the line-up resembles the film properties and the very first line-up of the team from 1963: Iron Man, Thor, Ant-Man (called Giant Man in the release but clearyl wearing the cybernetic helmet), Wasp, and Hulk. Captain America joined the team with the fourth issue but will be here from the outset.

"The addition of The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to our quickly expanding animation slate continues our plan to complement each of our tentpole live action features with an animated series," said Eric Rollman, President of Animation.  "This new ensemble series tracks perfectly with our highly anticipated ‘road to the Avengers’ strategy which includes some of Marvel’s biggest and most beloved characters, and which kicks off with two Avengers’ themed feature films in summer 2011.”

While the super-team has been seen on countless Marvel-related series in the past, this will be the first series they can call their own.  Previously, Lionsgate released two animated direct-to-DVD releases based on The Ultimates although branded as Avengers.

Marvel is making major inroads into animation after years of little production. BET will have the Black Panther in early 2009 while later that year Nicktoons will air Wolverine and the X-Men and Iron Man: Armored Adventures. Also coming is Marvel Super Hero Squad, whatever that is.
