‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ debuts with $87 million opening weekend

It takes more than swine flu and Internet piracy to keep our boy down.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine clawed (sorry) its way to an $87 million opening weekend, despite being widely available online a full month before its release, lukewarm reviews and Vice President Joe Biden to avoid confined and crowded spaces. The movie opening numbers beat the first two X-Men installments (although not the third) and it’s looking like Logan’s run (sorry again) in theaters is going to be pretty strong this summer.

So, does this kill the “Internet piracy is bad for you” meme once and for all? Yeah, I didn’t think so either.

‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ premiere scuttled in Mexico City; massive theater closings in Mexico

‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ premiere scuttled in Mexico City; massive theater closings in Mexico

Twentieth Century Fox has decided to postpone the premiere of X-Men Origins: Wolverine set for Wednesday in Mexico City, as the city remains paralyzed by the virus that has killed over 150 people. In addition, the major cinema chains in Mexico City have already announced they will be closed for the weekend, and may end up being closed for much longer.

Hugh Jackman, who was expected to attend the premiere, will now pull back. “We were not only concerned about Hugh’s welfare – and we would never send anyone into harm’s way – but we also have an enormous office filled with people we care about,” says a rep for Fox quoted in People. “There was no point in proceeding under the current conditions.”

Mexico’s film market share is about 13% of the US, so a misfire will make a dent in worldwide box-office. But the bigger concern may be the US– New York is a major market, and more swine flu cases have been reported here. In any pandemic situation, people will be told to avoid gathering in crowds– like movie audiences.

If this keeps up, the only way to watch this film at all will be online. Which, considering how an early version of the film hit the Internet a month early, would be terribly ironic.

  • Hugh Jackman heartbroken over ‘Wolverine’ leak: Jackman said, "Obviously people are seeing an unfinished film. It’s like a Ferrari without a paint job." Jackman is on a world tour to promote the movie, making his first stop at Cockatoo Island in Sydney Harbor, where much of the film was shot. He arrived at the venue by helicopter before swooping to the ground on a zipline.

Here is today’s list of comic-related news items that might not generate a post of their own, but may be of interest…

* The Way the Future Blogs: Proving that you’re never to young to start blogging, Frederik Pohl has started one– at the age of 89.

* Johanna notes what I think is yet another sign of the ongoing recession in comics: Stupid Publisher Tricks: Raising Price Dramatically After Order:

Top Cow offered hardcover collections of Midnight Nation (in November) and Broken Trinity (in December) at the price of $34.99. However, they’ve decided to upgrade the editions… and each book is now priced at $100. For a slipcase and poster? They may call the books oversized, but they’re now only the size of a sheet of copy paper.

* In the most interesting non-comics news I read today, Tivo reported a significant spike in "timeshifting" of primetime programming last year, particularly during sweeps periods. 54% of primetime programming was viewed on a timeshifted basis during broadcast sweeps in May and October of 2008, demonstrating a correlation between the most highly promoted programming and the amount of timeshifting among viewers.

* And speaking of timeshifting, a reminder: Wolverine and the X-Men premieres tomorrow night on Nicktoons. Here’s a teaser:
