Showtime Orders Final Season of ‘The Tudors’

Showtime’s The Tudors has been renewed for a fourth and final season according to Variety. The series’ third season launched just two weeks ago and comes in the wake of the premium channels’ decision not to buy four new series. Showtime did not launch a new series in 2008 and the pressure is on to launch successful projects in order to grow and remain competitive with HBO and Starz.

Jonathan Rhys Myers returns as King Henry VIII for the final ten episodes which will shoot in Dublin starting in June and air next spring. Creator/showrunner Michael Hirst will be writing all the scripts as he has for the previous thirty installments.

The third season opened April 5 and the ratings showed a cumulative audience of 1.3 million once all airings were totaled. The first two seasons, which we positively reviewed, are available on DVD.

Comic stores donating Spider-Man/Obama profits to charity

In the spirit of coming together, a number of stores are taking Amazing Spider-Man #583, featuring Spider-Man meeting Barack Obama, a comic that they know they’re going to sell out of when it goes on sale today, and are using the money to help others.

Green Brain Comics in Dearborn, Michigan has announced that they’re donating money from the sales to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund.

Wonderworld Comics in Taylor, Michigan is offering a variety of deals: buy a store gift certificate for $100, for example, and get the Obama Spider-Man issue for free. Wonderworld is donating some proceeds to the Hero Initiative.

Rob Zombie Returns for Second Helping of ‘Halloween’

Rob Zombie has, not surprisingly, signed on direct a sequel to his remake of John Carpenter’s Halloween. He and Dimension Films have stressed this will not be a remake of Halloween 2. 

Production is gearing up so H2 can be shot starting in March and readied for release in October according to Variety.

“The new film picks up right as the first remake ended, following the aftermath of Michael Myers’ murderous rampage through the eyes of the sister he hunted,” said the trade.

Zombie initially told the studio that he wasn’t interested in coming back, despite the remake’s $60 million haul last year.

"I was so burned out. (But) I took a long break, made a record and I got excited again," Zombie said. "Now, we’ll be hauling ass, and that’s the problem making a movie called Halloween‘ If you come out Nov. 1 or after, nobody cares. If it was called anything else, I’d be fine."

Zombie is also at work on other films incluiding the animated film The Haunted World of El Superbeasto, based upon his comic book series, The Adventures of El Superbeasto. He’s also directing the live action Rob Zombie’s Tyrannosaurus Rex for Dimension.

Sci Fi Finally Green Lights ‘Caprica’

In an overdue announcement, Sci Fi Channel has formally picked up Caprica as an ongoing series.  The show, a prequel to Battlestar Galactica, will star Eric Stoltz, Esai Morales, Paula Malcomson and Polly Walker in a story set fifty years prior to BSG.

Variety describes Caprica as a “Family-drama-themed series will focus on the Earthlike planet of Caprica as two rival families deal with, among other topical issues, the broader implications of their society’s emerging artificial intelligence technology sector.”

Ronald D. Moore and David Eick, along with Remi Aubuchon (24) will executive produce as they have on BSG. Caprica‘s pilot was co-written by Aubuchon and Moore and directed by Jeffrey Reiner (Friday Night Lights).

A promo for the series can be found at the Sci Fi website with a “Coming Soon” despite the trades saying it won’t air before 2010. Production will begin in the summer of 2009 while BSG will begin airing its final ten episodes in January.

"Battlestar Galactica was absolutely our flagship show. It put us on the map and helped transform the perception of the network," Sci Fi president Dave Howe told Variety. "We want people to come to this who have never heard of Battlestar Galactica. I think, because (Galactica‘s) backdrop was space and spaceships, there was a barrier to entry for some viewers. Caprica has none of that. It’s an intense family drama set on an Earthlike planet, in the near future, speaking to a lot of the ethical dilemmas that we as a human race are going to have to face very shortly."

Economy Forces Sparx to Reduce Size

Sparx, the animation studio that produced this fall’s disappointing Igor, is closing its Paris office according to Variety. The bulk of its work will remain in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam while retaining a Los Angeles office.

“We’ve been hit by the shockwaves of the U.S. financial crisis,” said Thomas Schober, Sparx’s head of production. “Since our industry relies heavily on private financing, the crisis has made it extremely difficult for us to get work on features.”

Igor, released in September by The Weinstein Company, has managed to earn only $25,532,257 worldwide according to Box Office Mojo. They have since dropped out of working on Exodus Films’ Bunyan and Babe.

“Eventually we’ll be back working on big, sophisticated animated features from our Vietnam facility,” said Sparx CEO Renaud Biscarratr. “But for now, we’re going to focus on what we used to do before: commercials, TV series and videogames.”

Sparx has made their name by producing CGI effects for European features, trailers and commercials.

‘Gearhead’ Optioned for Feature Film

Arcana Comics’ Gearhead has been option for a feature film by Gale Anne Hurd’s Valhalla Motion Pictures. The graphic novel was created by Dennis Hopeless and Kevin Mellon and originally appeared as a miniseries prior to trade collection.

Variety says the “story revolves around a young woman who leaves the drag strip to team up with a group of rebels to fight the corrupt superheroes who govern the U.S.”

Hurd is no stranger to comic books or science fiction, most recently producing last summer’s Incredible Hulk and next month’s Punisher: War Zone.

Founded in 2004, Arcana began as a studio and has branched into producing comic books, webcomics and related merchandise. They continue to produce creative work for a wide variety of companies including National Hockey League, Disney and THQ.
