Variety reports that, among those cast in J. J. Abrams’ new Star Trek movie is Simon Pegg, star of Shawn of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. He’s slated to play Scotty, the role made famous by James Doohan. The same story says John Cho (Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle) will be Sulu. The film is scheduled to go into production next month, with a Christmas 2008 release date.

(For those of you who don’t get the image at the right, Darick Robertson based the look of character Wee Hughie on Simon Pegg. So even if you haven’t seen Shawn of the Dead or Hot Fuzz or even that Doctor Who episode he did, you know what he looks like. Simon also did the introduction to The Boys trade paperback, and is a big comics fan.)

The Star Trek movie, co-starring Leonard Nimoy, has been fully cast with one important exception: the role of James T. Kirk. William Shatner holds out hope.

Now that I’ve got your attention, No: J.J. Abrams is not doing a line of Hulk books. Rather, he’s just announced that former Hulk star Eric Bana will be facing off against the new Captain James T. Kirk in 2008’s remake/reboot/re-imagining/re-whatever of Star Trek. Bana is signed to play Nero, the newest/oldest baddie who has a plan to take down Kirk and probably the whole enterprise.

So far, Abrams has been pretty good on keeping a lid on casting rumors and things we, the fans, don’t really need to know just yet. Back at ComiCon, he announced that Heroes‘ star Zachary Quinto would be playing our new Spock.. along side Nimoy, who will ALSO be portraying the role. This brings up theories that it could be a parallel universe, or alternate timelines, or they could all be lost on an island that has mystical powers… let’s hope it’s not that last one.

Also set star is Anton Yelchin (Huff) as young Chekov, Zoe Saldana (Pirates Trilogy) as the young Uhura, and it is rumored that Mike Vogel (from the new giant monster/alien/who knows movie Cloverfield/1-18-08) will take the helm as our new, less bloated James T. Kirk.

The film is currently set for a Christmas 2008 release.

Next month will mark the release of the remastered 10-disc DVD (and HD-DVD) set of the original Star Trek series, and the Trek publicity machine has been busy.  We’ve seen an asteroid named for George Takei, both Takei and Nichelle Nichols appearing on Heroes (which also houses the proto-Spock), and the world will even witness William Shatner’s upcoming receipt of the Jules Verne Lifetime Achievement Award in Paris in December.

But for some Trekkers, that just isn’t enough.  They need their own version of the Buffy musical phenomenon.  And the powers that be are more than happy to oblige, at $12.50 a pop.

On November 13, the two-part remastered version of "The Menagerie," made using footage from the original ST pilot "The Cage," will be shown in select theatres throughout North America.  The event  will include an "in-theatre exclusive greeting from creator Gene Roddenberry’s son, Eugene ‘Rod’ Roddenberry" and of course the evening wouldn’t be complete without the mandatory making-of-behind-the-scenes self-congratulations.  Bear in mind, the "event content," as it’s called, will be shown in its original (TV) format, 4×3.

Some of us are just looking forward (or backward, as the case may be) once more to a female Number One.

AP reports that an asteroid between Mars and Jupiter has been renamed 7307 Takei in honor of George Takei. "I am now a heavenly body," Takei, 70, said Tuesday, laughing. "I found out about it yesterday. … I was blown away. It came out of the clear, blue sky — just like an asteroid."

George is best known for his role as Hikaru Sulu in the original Star Trek series and movies, and most recently in the Star Trek: New Voyages episode "World Enough And Time". There’s also his recurring role in Heroes and appearances on the Howard Stern show. And, of course, he’s known for his heavenly body. (Hat tip: Lisa Sullivan.)

I know, I know, no fanboy out there in the land of Heroes, Star Wars, Star Trek and the like even watches soaps on daytime television.

Sure you don’t.

Well I do and I have done so for over 20 years. That among other reasons is why I, fanboy, have a lovely Asian goddess in my life while you identify at 30 with the kids from Superbad.

So make fun of me all you want, I don’t have to visit the “Love You Long Time” website to get my kicks. Part of that is because I watch soaps and I am sensitive.

Yes, sensitive.

I know that mostly women watch soaps but I have learned a great deal about women from watching soaps. What have I learned? Well that’s another column which I’m writing (called The Fanboy Guide To Girls) but I will give you one example of what I have learned about women from watching soaps. If you are on the phone they will pick up the extension and listen…guaranteed.

The one and only soap I watch is All My Children. I LOVE THAT SHOW!

What follows is an open letter to the head of ABC Daytime or the Executive Producer of All My Children who ever is responsible for turning the best show on TV into the reason I am thinking about joining a cult. For all you readers who don’t watch the show (sure you don’t) I will try and explain some of the goings on by way of AMC facts*

Dear Sir/Madam or Satan,

I am a black man born and raised in the mean streets and housing projects of New York City. I have seen people shot, been shot at, been beat up, robbed etc. In fact just about any thing your writers can come up with on the show that happened to Jessie (You remember Jessie don’t you? No? Well Jessie was that black street kid that Jackson Montgomery adopted who simply disappeared from the show.) Well, I’m the real life Jessie.

I have been watching All My Children for over 20 years. I have been a fan for that long. I own All My Children trading cards, Erica Kane Barbie dolls, and hard cover books on the series. Let me tell you something, when you are a 6’2” black man with a Erica Kane Barbie on your mantel, that’s a fan. No matter what happened to me during my day on the street I could always look forward to coming home grabbing a Cherry Coke and losing myself in the lives and loves of the citizens of Pine Valley.

Comic fans love to play imaginary casting games.  Now that comic book movies have become big business, the folks with real money have the means to make those games come true.  Here’s the latest casting news, both rumored and factual (at least for now):

  • Jessica Biel to play Wonder Woman in the upcoming Justice League movie?  Variety reports talks are in progress.  At least she won’t have to dye the hair this time.  (Oh no, wait, that was Jessica Alba, wasn’t it?  Sometimes all Jessicas look alike to me…)
  • Sarah Paulson of Studio 60 has joined the cast of the Frank Miller-directed The Spirit.  She will probably not be playing Dolphin Girl.
  • English actor Dominic West is slated to play the villain Jigsaw in The Punisher: War Zone flick.
  • The cast of Repo! The Genetic Opera includes Paris Hilton, Sarah Brightman, Paul Sorvino and Alexa Vega.  "Set in the not-so-distant future, the production tells the story of an epidemic of organ failures that devastates the planet, killing tens of millions.  As scientists feverishly make plans for a massive organ harvest program, a multi-billion dollar biotech company called GeneCo begins to manufacture salvation — for a price — offering simple payment plans to those lacking the necessary funds to purchase new body parts outright. But all financed organs are subject to default procedures, including repossession at the hand of the notorious organ repo men." And it’s a musical.  My head hurts just thinking about this one.
  • Lastly, Nichelle Nichols gives some advice to Zoe Saldana on playing Uhura in the upcoming Star Trek prequel movie.

While Mike Gold shared the news about the honest-to-goodness JLA movie, another project was also announced yesterday.

Dimension Films will be producing the inevitable spoof entitled, what else, Superhero. The casting has been completed with filming about to begin and a March 28, 2008 release date set.

The film features perennial spoof master Leslie Neilsen, in addition to Brent Spiner (Star Trek: The Next Generation), Marion Ross (Happy Days), the amazing Jeffrey Tambor (Arrested Development), Drake Bell (High Fidelity), Sara Paxton (Sydney White), Christopher McDonald (Fanboys), Kevin Hart (Scary Movie 4), and Ryan Hansen (Veronica Mars).  The satire will be written and directed by Craig Mazin (Scary Movie 3 and 4).

Of course, Mystery Men was a wonderful superhero spoof ahead of its time, so we’ll reserve judgment until next spring.

While we be on the topic of pirates, we note with pride that Zoe Saldana, the saucy wench who played the pirate Anamaria in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl has been shanghaied into playing the role of Lieutenant Uhura in the upcoming Starrr… ahem, Star Trek movie. This be accordin’ to the stinkin’ landlubbers over at SciFi.com.

Clearly, a fine and outstanding choice — note that there already be photos of her next to a Cingular logo with a new cell phone, so the endorsement doubloons will be filling her treasure chest for many tides to come.

The deals are taking their positions by the pole, ready to make “Go, Speed Racer, go,” next year’s biggest catch phrase.  Just announced by Speed Racer Enterprises are a series of new licensing deals; the most interesting (to you readers) is IDW landing comic book rights.

In addition to all new comics, they have the rights to collect previous incarnations of the anime series, one of the earliest to be imported from Japan.  There have been eleven different comic series from publishers including Now, Malibu, and DC Comics with the earliest dating back to 1990.

IDW expects to have their first releases out in the first quarter of 2008 to catch the anticipation of the new feature length film from the Wachowskis, due May 9.  Speed racer joins IDW’s growing line of licensed books which already includes Angel, Star Trek, and Transformers.

A new animated series, entitled Speed Racer: The Next Generation, will also debut with twenty-six episodes on Nicktoons.  LionsGate has already announced the first DVD collection of this series will also be available in 2008. The original fifty-two episodes are already available in a multi-volume DVD set.

On this day in 1976, the first Space Shuttle, Enterprise, was unveiled by NASA. Named after some fictional starship from some silly TV show, OV-101 was rolled out of the Rockwell plant at Palmdale, California. In keeping with its name, Gene Roddenberry and much of the cast of the original series of Star Trek were on hand at the dedication ceremony, and the show’s theme music was played.

The ship currently resides at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum‘s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center at Dulles International Airport, where it is the centerpiece of the space collection.
