‘Star Trek’ Bumped to Summer ’09 Release

Paramount Studios has shuffled the release dates for several of its films now that the writers strike is over, including J.J. Abrams’ much anticipated Star Trek.

Star Trek was originally scheduled to hit theaters this year on Dec. 25, but will now be released on May 9, 2009.

While many of the films being rescheduled have been moved due to stalled scripts or other issues related to the strike, Paramount has stated that the situation with Star Trek is actually quite different.

"’Star Trek’ is moving to summer because its has so much boxoffice potential," Par spokesman Michael Vollman said. "It does not need any script tweaks. They’re two-thirds of the way through shooting, and we would have delivered a great movie at Christmas."

The Hollywood Reporter has details on the Star Trek move, as well as other Paramount films likely to be rescheduled.

No surprise here: "Cloverfield" will receive a sequel, according to a report in Variety.

Paramount is in "early talks" with "Cloverfield" director Matt Reeves, producer J.J. Abrams and writer Drew Goddard to produce a sequel to the record-breaking, low-budget (if you consider $25 million "low-budget," that is) horror film. The film earned nearly twice its production costs in the first weekend it hit theaters, and set a record for the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend.

According to the report, Reeves is also in talks to direct a film titled "The Invisible Woman," but production of that film will likely be held off until after the "Cloverfield" sequel.

Remember the giant, horrific monster from the recent box office smash hit Cloverfield? Well, if you thought the thing was as cuddly as I did, you’ll be pleased to know that Hasbro toys, in partnership with Bad Robot and Paramount Pictures, has announced a new 14-inch, super-articulated, highly detailed limited edition of the Cloverfield Monster for you to put up on your toy shelf between your limited Fing Fang Foom Heroclick and Jack Kirby minibust.

 
Now, while the info from Hasbro states that this is a fully articulated action figure, I see this more as a "look but don’t touch" kind of toy, which means I won’t be playing with this in the bath…The plastic bohemoth does come with 10 parasites, the detached head from the Statue of Liberty, and makes that creepy godzilla-esque scream. To save from spoilers, there is no image up yet, but those of you who have a hundred bucks burning a hole in your pocket right now can head over here and pre-order the plastic representation of all of our nightmares. Release is expected for September 30th of this month.

Waiting for a trolley: "I’m so glad, I just found out that Lucy Lawless is going to be here on Sunday. I hope I get to show her my tattoo!" And in case she doesn’t get a chance, everybody else can see it here.

Marvel Studios has both Doctor Strange and Ant-Man in development as live action movies, along with gosh-darn near everything else in the catalog. The good Doctor, of course, will make his live action D2DVD debut in a few weeks. And, according to a source, a new slate of animated D2DVDs is in the works.

Roberto Orci told SCI FI Wire that he and writing partner Alex Kurtzman have finished the script to the 11th Star Trek movie, which director J.J. Abrams will start filming in November. "We’re still casting," Orci said, and there will be "some kind of Kirk" in the movie. One recalls Star Trek OS featured "some kind of Captain Pike" in the episode "The Menagerie."

Orci also acknowledged he is "sure" CBS is thinking about using the new movie as a kick-off for a new teevee series, but his only concern is the upcoming movie.

Abrams to direct Trek XI — official?

After more rumor that what the smoke monster is on Lost, J.J. Abrams will direct the Star Trek XI movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.  Abrams had already said that he was writing the script and producing the movie for Paramount, which is re-launching the Gene Rodenberry franchise with this the 11th Star Trek feature film. 

According to an oft-repeated yet not quite officially confirmed story,the movie is a prequel, taking place prior to the time represented in the original Star Trek TV series when both James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock are at the Starfleet Academy. William Shatner had stated he was approached for a cameo.

The film is set for release November 26, 2008, just in time for the 40th anniversary of the cancellation of the original series.

Stardust reappears

Catch it whilst you can! Neil Gaiman reports that the more-or-less authorized Stardust movie website is back up. Stardust, of course, ties into Stardust the graphic novel by Neil and artist Charles Vess. Neil has also announced that Paramount has moved up the official release date of the Stardust movie to August 10 of this year. Considering the San Diego Comic-Con International is on July 26-29, I should think a debut showing there isn’t entirely out of the question.

And speaking of works by Neil, IESB’s Robert Sanchez asked director Joel Schumacher yesterday which comic book character he’d most love to tackle. "The response – Neil Gaiman’s Sandman!"
