Miley Cyrus Tackles ‘Babysitting’ Sequel

Miley Cyrus Tackles ‘Babysitting’ Sequel

Remember Adventures in Babysitting, the Chris Columbus teen comedy with Elisabeth Shue? Comic fans were most amused that one of her charges, Sara (Maia Brewton), wore Thor’s helmet throughout the film and Vincent D’Onofrio’s creepy character was nicknamed Thor.

The movie did well enough to spawn a short-lived television series and finally word is out that a sequel is being made.  The star will be Miley Cyrus, according to The Chicago Sun -Times, and the movie is slated for 2010. The Hannah Montana star will appear opposite fellow Disney headline Raven Symone with Tiffany Paulsen (Nancy Drew) at work on the script.

‘The Dark Knight’ Strives for $1 Billion

‘The Dark Knight’ Strives for $1 Billion

Warner Bros. has announced that The Dark Knight will return to both regular theaters and IMAX screens on January 23 as it reminds Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences voters the movie is worthy of Oscar consideration. The studio is also hoping it will earn the $70 million it needs to break the $600 domestic mark, second only to Titanic’s $600,788,188. Adjusted for inflation, The Dark Knight would rank 26th in domestic revenues.

As of December 3, Box Office Mojo reports the film has earned $530,327,889 in America and an additional  $465,929,447 globally, totaling $996,257,336, just shy of the $1 billion mark.

Warner has already begun its Oscar campaign, hoping to nab a Best Picture slot in addition to a posthumous supporting actor nomination for Heath Ledger’s memorable Joker.

Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. Pictures President of Domestic Distribution said in a release, “The Dark Knight is a crowning achievement in every sense of the word. We wanted to provide one more opportunity for moviegoers to experience it on the big screen as it was meant to be seen.”

Lauren Shuler Donner Ready to Begin ‘Magneto’

Lauren Shuler Donner Ready to Begin ‘Magneto’

Producer Lauren Shuler Donner told Indie London that X-Men Origins: Wolverine is “very good. I’m very pleased with it. It’s very much an origins story. It’s very much in the tone of the first X-Men.”

As for the next Origins project, she said, “We have a great script on Magneto. I’ll tell you the honest truth… I’ve made four movies this year and I was so busy that I didn’t at all talk to the studio while making Magneto because I couldn’t have done it. And David Goyer, who wrote and is going to direct it, also did another movie. So now, he’s done with his and I’m done with two of mine, so when I get back that’s my first order of business to say: ‘Come on, let’s go and make Magneto’.”

‘Watchmen’ Running Time Trimmed

‘Watchmen’ Running Time Trimmed

When Zack Snyder took footage from The Watchmen around the world, he told journalists in every city that the film was clocking in at 2:43 and would like remain in that range.  He and his wife Deborah confirmed to Sci Fi Wire that the film is actually getting a tad shorter.

"We’re getting really close," producer Deborah Snyder told the website. "We’re at two hours and 35 minutes."

Director Zack Snyder added: "The movie’s pretty long … compared to 300, which was an hour and 58 minutes. The director’s cut [of Watchmen] is about three hours and 10 minutes long. It has even more than the theatrical version as far as the detail that gets even closer to the graphic novel."

Snyder also said, "The Black Freighter version of the movie that we’re working on — which has the ins and outs of the Black Freighter comic book woven through it, with an animated version of the Black Freighter — will be about three hours and 40 minutes.  So there’s a huge epic version of Watchmen, which will probably come out after the movie’s theatrical release, for hardcore [fans]."

The film remains on schedule for its March 6 release.

Hugh Jackman Talks ‘Wolverine’ Sequels

Hugh Jackman Talks ‘Wolverine’ Sequels

Hugh Jackman is heavily promoting Baz Luhrman’s Australia, which opened on Wednesday and has happily spoken of his next big film, X-Men: Origins: Wolverine.

”If it’s clear to us on May second or third that that’s gone, then I’ll walk away happily," Jackson told Moviehole about his tenuous future as Logan. ”I’m not going to flog something – or flog a dead horse, or try and make movies that people don’t really want to go and see. I have no interest in that. Even no matter how much I love the character. So there are many prerequisites".

Jackman has made the character his pet project, taking on production chores and as a result is already thinking about future installments. "There’s a few story lines that are running my head which I think would be really cool, but unless the script is right, then I just don’t see the point in doing it. I’m probably at the point in my career where I don’t need it. And the last thing I want to do is just to push it on people, if it doesn’t warrant a full feature movie.”

He also discussed how the solo project came about. “David Benioff, one of the great writers in Hollywood, came knocking at our door,” Jackman explained. “And I went and had a meeting with him, and he told me his idea. And I just went, ‘That is so brilliant.’ Now, I know this character by now, and he is a mad, mad fan of the comic books. He’s not cheap. But he came to us with this idea, which was smart and interesting. And it was also steeped in a deep love of the character, and the comic book history. So I just went, ‘Okay. There’s a reason to make this film.’ I was always a mad fan, in reading the comics, of the Wolverine in Japan saga, which is one of the most famous. But ultimately, we all decided – I think rightly, after seeing the film – that you need to understand the character’s origins, to understand who he is. And to really get it. So that’s what the movie does. It goes right back to him as a kid, basically.”

Additionally, Fox News reports that he will return to the Broadway stage as legendary magician Harry Houdini.

“Danny Elfman, once the leader of pop group Oingo Boingo and now often a composer of movie scores, is writing the music. Kurt Andersen, a former magazine editor and current radio host here in New York, is said to be working on the script although no one’s seen anything yet,” the site reports.

“The main thing is that Hugh is already working on magic routines. The show, when it materializes, would include Jackman replicating big Houdini tricks on stage. Hugh has already played a magician in the movie, The Prestige, so he’s up for it. Magician extraordinaire Ricky Jay is said to be giving him advice. At some point the producers may reach out to David Blaine and to Cirque du Soleil for help.”

‘Wicked’ Film Inevitable

‘Wicked’ Film Inevitable

Kristin Chenoweth, now out of work with the cancellation of Pushing Daisies, was asked if she’d be reprising the role of Galinda in the inevitable feature film version of Wicked. She told Moviehole, ”Well, will it ever be made? Yes, I do think it will be made. I think — you know, there’s some sort of thing going on right now where everyone’s hearing that there’s going to be a movie. You know, there will be a movie. But I believe — and I could be wrong, but I believe it will be years before we see it as a movie, because — you know, Universal will really want to make sure that they suck it dry, so to speak in all the theaters. And if you look at movies like Chicago and Phantom of the Opera those were 20, 25 years after the fact. And I could see, definitely, me playing Madame Morrible at that point. But I hope they really do it soon, so that I’m young enough to play Galinda.”

The musical is based on Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire which takes a revisionist look at the witches living in L. Frank Baum’s Oz. The best-seller was turned into a musical songs and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman and it debuted to acclaim in 2003, making stars of Chenoweth and Idina Menzel.

Wanted’s Marc Platt was signed to a long term deal at Universal this past July according to Variety and Wicked was included in the projects he will produce for them. Holzman is said to be at  work on a screenplay with David Stone on board  to co-produce.

ABC Reshuffles Schedule at Expense of Quality

ABC Reshuffles Schedule at Expense of Quality

When the writer’s strike crippled audiences getting to know and love many freshman series last season, NBC and ABC decided that five would be held back for reintroduction this fall.  The shows — Chuck, Life, Pushing Daisies, Private Practice and Dirty Sexy Money.  On Friday, the verdict came down that the plan didn’t work as anticipated.

ABC has chosen not to renew Pushing and Dirty Sexy Money beyond their first thirteen episodes for the season. Private Practice will be slotted behind Grey’s Anatomy to try and salvage the creatively disjointed series. Life and Chuck seem to be faring better and the network is supporting them.

Also being canceled is Eli Stone which was a midseason replacement last spring.

"It’s all true," Daisies creator Bryan Fuller told Entertainment Weekly. "I’m so very proud of this show and grateful for everyone’s hard work in bringing it to life.

Replacing the shows will be the eighth and possibly final season of Scrubs, which moves to ABC after seven years on NBC. It debuts on January 6 at 9 p.m. with two weeks of a full hour of new episodes followed by the series settling in on January 20 at 9:30.

The Latest ‘Star Trek’ News

The Latest ‘Star Trek’ News

First Showing is reporting that Star Trek will not only beam into multiplexes around the nation, but can also be found on IMAX.

Other IMAX releases are scheduled to include Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

In other Star Trek news, Paramount released two more teaser posters featuring Uhura (Zoe Saldana) and the villain Nero (Eric Bana) as seen here.

IDW released the cover to the first issue of Star Trek: Countdown #1, the prequel miniseries coming in January.

The story is plotted by Trek screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman and scripted by Mike Johnson (Superman/Batman) and Tim Jones, with  art by David Messina (Star Trek: Mirror Images). Messina also provides covers for the series.

“There was a lot of back and forth about doing this project, how to do it, what it would be about, but what all parties agreed on was that we needed the right story and that it needed to matter. It had to count both on its own merits and when read in conjunction with the new movie,” said series editor Andy Schmidt in a release. “I couldn’t be happier with the project and what it means to the overall Star Trek franchise!”

"Star Trek: Countdown lays the groundwork for what happens in the movie," said Roberto Orci. "It’s our way of passing the baton from the Next Generation characters and their movies to the new film."

Umbrella Academy: The Movie

Deadline Hollywood Daily reports that Universal Studios and Dark Horse Comics, the folks who brought us Hellboy II: The Golden Army, are continuing their long-standing relationship and fast-tracking a movie version of The Umbrella Academy. The Eisner-winning series was written by Gerard Way, former intern at DC Comics who later went on to international fame as the frontman for My Chemical Romance.

This proves what I’ve suspected for a long time: if you’re going to do anything big in the world– rock star, movie mogul, Eisner winner– you have to stop being an intern at DC.
