Ted Stevens: 1923-2010

Ted Stevens: 1923-2010

Former Senator Theodore Fulton Stevens and four others died in a plane crash August 9, 2010 in southwest Alaska. Stevens was the Senate’s longest serving Republican, with a political career that spanned from 1961 to 2008. He helped make Alaska the 49th state, and pushed for the construction of bridges, rural water systems, military bases, the trans-Alaskan pipeline, and more in order to improve and lay a foundation for the state. He was considered a great Alaskan, and a formidable political opponent.

Yes, but why are we mentioning a politician here?

Stevens was a fan of Marvel’s green powerhouse, the Incredible Hulk. When he faced his toughest challenges, he donned an Incredible Hulk tie to show he meant business. Former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said, “When I see the Hulk tie on Ted Stevens, I know he’s pumped up.” In response, Marvel sent Stevens Hulk paraphernalia and threw him a Hulk-themed party. Stevens often joked about his notorious angry and crotchety demeanor, saying, “I didn’t lose my temper. I know right where it is.”

Stevens is also quoted for describing the internet as a “series of tubes.” Many references have been made to his understanding of the internet, including several made on The Daily Show with John Stewart.

When Stevens left the Senate in 2008, Senator Mitch McConnell said, “I think it is safe to say,
without any fear of contradiction, that no senator in the history of the
United States has ever done more for his state than Senator Ted Stevens.” Condolences to the families of Ted Stevens and the four others who died: Theron “Terry” Smith, William “Bill” Phillips
Sr., Dana Tindall, and Corey Tindall.

Powerpoint advice from the Incredible Hulk

Powerpoint advice from the Incredible Hulk

This is the week for angry business stuff here, isn’t it? Yesterday, we had Evil Inc. and Fox Business News, and today we have advice on preparing your business presentations from the Incredible Hulk:

  • Showcase hidden strengths
  • Find something to care about
  • Don’t overdo it
  • And for heaven’s sake, stay calm:

Whether you are the unfortunate victim of a gamma radiation overdose
or just a guy trying to pull off a great presentation, the rule is the
same: Chill out! Things are going to go wrong. Outlets aren’t going to
work. You will forget your extra batteries on the day when your
batteries finally die. Yes. Your fonts are beautiful – and unfathomably
tiny. Here’s an idea: live, learn and laugh. You can’t prepare for
every factor that will mess with your perfect presentation. That’s why
should always be preparing to present the imperfect one. Trust me, throwing the lectern through the wall will solve nothing.

Personally, I always use Jedi skills when giving business presentations. They always work well on the weak-minded.

William Hurt joins the hunt for ‘Robin Hood’

William Hurt joins the hunt for ‘Robin Hood’

William Hurt, seen here as General "Thunderbolt" Ross from last year’s Incredible Hulk movie,  has been added to the cast of Ridley Scott’s untitled Robin Hood, formerly known as Nottingham. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he will appear as William Marshall, the Earl of Pembroke, a historical figure who was one of the most powerful men in Europe. Marshall was a servant to the Plantagenet kings and one of the best jousters of the era.

The feature, due May 14, 2010, stars Russell Crowe in a “retelling of the origins of the legend’s key characters.” Production began on the film recently and the cast includes Cate Blanchett as Lady Marion, Vanessa Redgrave as Queen Eleanor, Mark Strong as Sir Godfrey, Oscar Issac as King John, Léa Seydoux as French Princess Isabella, and the Merry Men: Scott Grimes as Will Scarlet, Kevin Durand as Little John, Alan Doyle as Allan Adayle.

ComicMix Quick Picks – February 10, 2009

ComicMix Quick Picks – February 10, 2009

A collection of news items that have come in over the last few days while we’ve been recovering from NYCC.

  • KC Carlson is also recovering, but from a mini-stroke instead of con crud. Get well soon, big guy.
  • Brett Ratner directing Youngblood, according to Variety. So if you love what he did with X-Men 3… and Rob Liefeld continues one heck of a lucky streak.
  • Denys Cowan alerted me to the existence of a Black Panther trailer for the BET series this summer, but for some reason Marvel didn’t make it embeddable. Because, I presume, they don’t want to let people share and promote it. Way to go, Marvel. Go follow the link.
  • Rich Johnston for the win:
Daniel Dae Kim, better known as Jin off of “Lost”, also attending the New York Comic Convention this weekend, in his capacity of being in “Lost,” “24,” “Enterprise,” “Angel,” “Hulk,” “Crusade” and all that. But he also wanted to walk around the show, buy comics, meet creators etc, without getting mobbed. So someone found him a “V For Vendetta” mask, letting Daniel walk around untouched for hours.
As I start looking through all my photos…
  • And finally, Spider-Man cake wrecks. (Hat tip: Lisa Sullivan.)

Anything else we missed? Consider this an open thread.

Producer Turns Attention from ‘Punisher’ to ‘Magdalena’

Producer Turns Attention from ‘Punisher’ to ‘Magdalena’

Producer Gale Ann Hurd told Sci Fi Wire that  she envision Magdalena as  a blend of "Da Vinci Code meets Wanted", employing the shorthand producers and studio execs use to sell a project by invoking familiar concepts in a new way.  This way, risk-adverse studios feel more confident in going with something different, but not too different.

"The character doesn’t have superpowers," Hurd explained. "So I think it will be intense, but it will more than likely be a PG-13 as opposed to an R just because of the world of the character and the world of the comic book. It’s really exciting. We’re working with Matt [Hawkins] at Top Cow, and we’re working with a writer. We hope to have that up and running toward the end of the year.”

The adaptation of the Top Cow series will feature Jenna DeWan (Step Up) is set to play Patience,  the latest in the Magdalena bloodline, which traces back to Mary Magdalene. The current embodiment of the line becomes the warrior and protector of the Catholic Church.

She first appeared in 1998 and  spun out of the pages of The Darkness and has starred in two solo miniseries.

While promoting today’s release of Punisher: War Zone, she also looked back to the summer and the reimagined Incredible Hulk movie.

"I think it successfully rebooted it," Hurd said. "I think the fans liked it, the general audience liked it. It’s been huge on DVD. I was just talking with [Marvel Studios chairman] David Maisel last night. The two big DVDs so far this year that have been released are Iron Man and Hulk, so it’s always nice to see that it continues to build its fan base

"[I’m] hoping there’s a sequel, but right now Marvel has its hands full with the slate they’ve announced," she said. "If there’s a sequel, it wouldn’t be until probably 2012." Marvel has not announced any firm plans for any project after 2011.
