Holy crossover! Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arrives in June

BURBANK, CA (March 14, 2019) – It’ll take the unlikely unification of the Dark Knight and the Heroes in a Half-shell to overcome combined villainous forces afoot in Gotham City in the all-new, feature-length animated thriller, Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Produced by Warner Bros. Animation, Nickelodeon and DC, the film arrives from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment on Digital starting May 14, 2019, and on 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack and Blu-ray Combo Pack on June 4, 2019.

Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will be available on 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack ($39.99 SRP) and Blu-ray Combo Pack ($24.98 SRP), as well as on Digital ($19.99 HD, $14.99 SD). The 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack features an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc in 4K with HDR and a Blu-ray disc featuring the film; the Blu-ray Combo Pack features the film in hi-definition. The 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Combo Pack include a digital version of the film.

Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles finds Gotham City reaching new levels of danger when Shredder joins forces with Ra’s al Ghul to enact a nefarious plan – leading to the team-up of the Dark Knight and the Turtles to combat the combined might of the Foot Clan and League of Assassins!

The Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles all-star cast is led by Troy Baker (Batman: Arkham Origins, The Last of Us) as the voice of both Batman and the Joker – making Baker the first actor to ever play both roles in the same film. Opposite Baker are the Ninja Turtles themselves – Emmy Award/Golden Globe Award/SAG Award winner Darren Criss (American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace, Glee) as Raphael, Kyle Mooney (Saturday Night Live) as Michelangelo, Baron Vaughn (Grace and Frankie) as Donatello, and Eric Bauza (Looney Tunes Cartoons, The Woody Woodpecker Show) as Leonardo.

Jake Castorena (The Death of Superman) directs Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from a script by Marly Halpern-Graser (Mad, Batman Unlimited, Be Cool, Scooby-Doo). The film is inspired by the comic book series “Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” by James Tynion IV and Freddie Williams II (published by DC Comics and IDW Publishing) and is based on characters from DC and Nickelodeon. Disney Reinstates Director James Gunn For ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy 3’

James Gunn returning to direct “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3”

The good guys win one. Deadline.com reports:

Disney has reinstated James Gunn as the writer-director of Guardians of the Galaxy 3, and I’ve confirmed it with Marvel and Gunn’s camp.

Gunn was fired last July by Disney after alt-right journalists hyped a bunch of decade old social media missives that made light of pedophilia and rape. Persuaded by Gunn’s public apology and his handling of the situation after, Horn decided to reverse course and reinstate Gunn.

Gunn is also slated to do Suicide Squad 2, which is scheduled to be done before Guardians 3.

Titans Season 1 Headed for Home Next Week

The Little Mermaid rekindled Walt Disney’s animation excellence, launching the current wave of films and fascination with the princesses. It remains a stunning piece of work, with excellent songs and vocal performances, that continues to hold up well with repeated viewings. Jodi Benson’s innocent, yearning Ariel is well matched by the scheming Pat Carroll as Ursula, one of the more frightening antagonists in the animated oeuvre.

For me, though, the film’s magical place in history is enhanced because it was the first film we took Kate to see. Snuggled between us, on a booster seat to see the screen, she was enchanted, eyes wide and riveted. I enjoyed it from a craft and entertainment standpoint, but she fell in love because of the Disney magic.

The 1989 release is out as part of their 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Signature Collection line (number eight in the set, collect ‘em all).

The well-known story is nicely adapted from the original Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale. We have the sixteen-year-old mermaid wishing to experience a life of adventure, unaware of having to be careful for what one desires. After defying her father King Triton (Kenneth Mars), she discovers the shipwrecked Prince Eric (Christopher Daniel Barnes), and instantly falls in love. She makes a horrible deal with Ursula, who will grant her human form in exchange for her voice and we go from there.

Being a Disney film, there are several creature comrades, often the making or breaking of a film. Here, Sebastian the crab (Samuel E. Wright), Flounder (Jason Marin), and Scuttle (Buddy Hackett), more than fit the bill.

The Alan Menken and Howard Ashman score adds a dimension lacking in Disney animated fare going back to the last great musical, The Jungle Book. The music and songs are just a delight, with Caribbean themes and more traditional Broadway fare mixed in. The story actually follows the musical formula, complete with Bensons lovely ‘I want song’ “Part of your World’.

The Blu-ray, DVD, Digital HD combo pack was reviewed and I can attest that the new high def transfer is superior to the Diamond Edition. The 4K is said to be even sharper, but the colors here just pop. The DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 lossless soundtrack, though, is the Diamond Edition version, very good, but could be better.

There are some new bonus features with older ones reserved for the digital edition. One such addition is the Sing-Along mode, perfect for sleepovers.

Alan Menken and the Leading Ladies (15:45) as Benson, Paige O’Hara (Belle), Judy Kuhn (Pocahontas’ singing voice), Lillias White (Muse), and Donna Murphy (Mother Gothel) share what working with Menken has been like.

“What I Want from You Is… Your Voice” (5:47): Watch Wright, Hackett, Carroll, and Benson rehearse their parts and later discuss their roles.

Stories from Walt’s Office: Gadgets and Gizmos (6:01): Apparently, Walt collected tchotchkes and we tour his preserved collection.

For years, people have looked at Gahan Wilson’s cartoons in Playboy and The New Yorker and said he was demented. Sadly, it’s now all too true—Gahan is suffering from severe dementia. His wife of 53 years passed away this weekend, and as a result, the memory care facility he had been living in wants to move him out immediately. His stepson Paul writes:

Gahan and my mother had been residing in an assisted living facility in Arizona. With my mother’s passing, the facility is about to discharge him. We must find him a memory care facility immediately… She was his rock. His guide through the world. While we all helped with his care, it was my mother who grounded him. He is currently distraught and out of sorts with the world.
