Survey: How much of a discount are you getting for your comics?
This question was prompted by:
- Free Comic Book Day, where a whole lot of comics were handed out at a 100% discount, and;
- this comment from Vinnie Bartilucci about a firm being “the last chain in the history of the world to try and get list price for almost their entire catalog. I despise them.”
So it got us to thinking– what are people actually paying for comics nowaday? Not how much are they consuming, we have decent numbers about that– but at what discount? That may give us a better idea as to what sort of margin stores are working on nowadays, and how comic readers are behaving.

30% off NEW comics. DJ's Universal Comics in Studio City, CA.
While I lived in Indianapolis, the stores did not push subscriptions. With a long lunch break at my disposal on Wednesdays, I didn't enjoy any discount. When I moved to Chicago, and found my new shop, subscriptions with discounts were a given. Because of my discount, I have to note I've increased my subscriptions by atleast an extra 10 books a month.
I used to get 25% off at my previous store. The store I go to now gives $20 credit for every $100 spent.
The last few comics that I've bought for myself came from Amazon. I got these at really good discount but not a percentage discount. I think I picked up Hammer of the Gods for $2 plus shipping and "The March" for a penny plus shipping! And what comics I don't read (legally) on line, I borrow from the library, which was not a choice on your survey.
My shop gives me a 10% discount on subscriptions and special orders.
Just waiting on the only comic I'm buying (nexus) to come out and I buy that with out any discount from my local comic shop but I will be buying Comicmix comics when they come out so I really should start to look into seeing if I can get any !
