I WELL remember this series and, I think, have written about it before. The fact that Pettigrew was African-American was kept from the reader until the very last chapter -- up until then he was a silhouette. This was in the late 50s remember and was set ion he year 1999. It also featured one heck of a cliffhanger for one episode. One of my fave series from back in those days.

I'd like to correct two small but important errors: First, the strip ran in 1964 and the election was originally set in 1972. It was later reset in 1976. Second Pope Pius XI reigned from 1922-1939 so he had nothing to do with the request. The reference was probably to Pope Pius XII who reigned from 1939-1958, so even the likelihood of his influence is doubtful. Pope John XXIII, however, reigned from 1958-1963 and was most likely the one who influenced the creation of the strip.
