Summit Signs On For Area 52

Summit Entertainment just acquired screen rights to Area 52, and will develop a live action adaptation based on the four-issue comic book series from Brian Haberlin published by Image Comics in 2001.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian will produce, and JC Spink will be executive producer through Benderspink. The comic focused on a top secret warehouse in Antarctica called Area 52, a government storage dump for otherworldly discoveries, manned by a ragtag group of misfits who have been exiled to the middle of nowhere to staff it. When an alien killing machine is accidentally hatched in this repository, the group must band together and use the stored mythological weapons and artifacts to save themselves and the world.

‘Twilight Saga: Eclipse’ goes IMAX

‘Twilight Saga: Eclipse’ goes IMAX

It was almost inevitable.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, the third movie in Summit Entertainment’s adaptations of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight books, will be released in IMAX theatres simultaneously with the movie’s nationwide release on June 30, 2010. The first Twilight movie to be released in IMAX theatres, IMAX Corporation and Summit Entertainment will digitally re-master Eclipse to enhance both the image and sound quality. Eclipse once again stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner.

The interesting question: for how long? New Moon had a huge opening and didn’t last long, so it will only stay in IMAX for two weeks, then be replaced on July 16th by Christopher Nolan’s Inception.

‘Twilight Saga: Eclipse’: Bryce Dallas Howard replacing Rachelle Lefevre as Victoria

‘Twilight Saga: Eclipse’: Bryce Dallas Howard replacing Rachelle Lefevre as Victoria

This just in from Access Hollywood:

Bryce Dallas Howard is joining the “Twilight” franchise.

The
“Terminator Salvation” star will replace Rachelle Lefevre in the role
of Victoria, according to Summit Entertainment, which produces the
vampire film series based on the books by Stephenie Meyer.

“We
are incredibly happy that Bryce has agreed to come into the franchise,”
Erik Feig, Summit’s President of Worldwide Production and Acquisitions,
said in a statement to Access Hollywood. “Rachelle brought
‘Victoria’ to great screen life and Bryce will bring a new dimension to
the character. The franchise is lucky to have such a talented actress
as Bryce coming in to fill the role.”

Summit said Rachelle
would not be continuing on as Victoria, an evil vampire out for revenge
over the death of her lover, due to scheduling conflicts.

Bryce,
the daughter of director Ron Howard, will take over the role beginning
in “Eclipse,” the third installment in the “Twilight” series.

“Eclipse”
begins filming in Vancouver this coming August, Summit confirmed. The
film will be released in theaters on June 30, 2010.

‘Firefly’ stars reunite for ‘V’; Sheen joins ‘Twilight Saga: New Moon’

‘Firefly’ stars reunite for ‘V’; Sheen joins ‘Twilight Saga: New Moon’

Spring is in the air… and lots of actors are finding work.

Frost/Nixon’s Michael Sheen has joined the cast of The Twilight Saga: New Moon. The now-filming sequel has added Sheen as Aro, the head vampire of the Italian Volturi vampire clan. Summit Entertainment will release the eagerly awaited adaptation of the Stephenie Meyer best-seller on November 20.

Elisabeth Shue takes a detour from her usual dramatic fare to appear in Alexandre Aja’s remake of Piranha 3D. The actress will play "Sheriff Julie Forester, a take-charge authority figure in the community of Lake Victoria" according to Moviehole, and the mother of one of the lead characters. Look for this in March 2010

While we weren’t looking, the cast for the revamp of V has filled out with some very familiar names which improve our hopes for the ABC pilot.  The formal network announcement will be May 19 but we’re crossing our fingers.  The proposed series, based on Kenneth Johnson’s original concepts, now features Elizabeth Mitchell (Lost), Morena Baccarin (Firefly), Joel Gretsch (The 4400), Morris Chestnut (Ladder 49), Alan Tudyk (Firefly), Scott Wolf (Party of Five) David Richmond-Peck (The Day The Earth Stood Still), Laura Vandervoort (Smallville), Lourdes Benedicto (The Nine), and Christopher Shyer (The Day).

Finally, the seaons finale for Smallville will guest star Impulse (Kyle Gallner) and Black Canary (Alaina Huffman).

Twilight’s Catherine Hardwicke: ‘If I Stay’, a ‘Maximum Ride’?

Twilight’s Catherine Hardwicke: ‘If I Stay’, a ‘Maximum Ride’?

Mending their relationship, Twilight production company Summit Entertainment and director Catherine Hardwicke are coming together again for the new fantasy/drama movie If I Stay, according to Variety.  The movie is based on author Gayle Forman’s young adult novel If I Stay, which will be published this spring by Dutton children’s Books.

Additionally, via ICv2, Hardwicke is in discussions with Columbia Pictures to develop and direct a movie adaptation of James Patterson young-adult book series Maximum Ride. Ex-Marvel honcho Avi Arad is producing the adaptation of Patterson’s tale of six teens who have been genetically altered so that they can fly. On the one hand, both the text versions and Yen Press’ Maximum Ride graphic novels have done very well. On the other hand, Arad’s first film after leaving Marvel– was Bratz.
