#SDCC: Oni first look with CBS, ‘Suicide Squad’ video game, ‘Astro City’ film option, and other media roundups

Collecting a bunch of quick hits between panels:

  • Nikki Finke reports
that Oni Press and its film-production arm Closed on Mondays
Entertainment have announced a first-look deal with CBS Television
Studios to develop the publisher’s comics for TV. Oni already has a lot of buzz this weekend thanks to that Scott Pilgrim movie. But on the other hand, last year’s big Oni property was Whiteout
  • DC’s Geoff Johns mentioned that work has begun on a Suicide Squad video game. Johns said the game, which is being developed by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, will be “hardcore violent.” No word yet if it will tie into the Suicide Squad big-screen adaptation announced in February 2009, or if it will tie in with Amanda Waller’s appearances in Smallville or next summer’s Green Lantern film. John Ostrander, the writer most associated with the Squad, is lost in Pennsylvania this weekend and couldn’t be reached for comment.
  • There are now official movie sites for both Thor and Captain America, although they’re pretty much placeholders at this point.
  • Spinoff Online reports that Kurt Busiek’s Astro City has been optioned for a feature film. I’m expecting something like Superman as directed by Robert Altman.

#SDCC: ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’ – UPDATED

#SDCC: ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’ – UPDATED

Byran Lee O’Malley’s popular Scott Pilgrim graphic novel series came to an end earlier this week with the release of the final volume, Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour. The series has been basking in popularity for quite some time now, especially since word of Universal’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World movie got out. In fact, the Scott Pilgrim Comic Con panel was all about the upcoming movie.

There were thirteen members of the panel, plus the moderator: director Edgar Wright, creator O’Malley, Michael Cera, Jason Schwartzman, Aubrey Plaza, Kieren Caulken, Ellen Wong, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Anna Kendrick, Mark Webber, Allison Phil, Brandon Routh, Satya Bhabba, Mae Whitman… and Schwartzman’s amazing mustache. There were surprise appearances by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, who both starred in Wright’s action-comedy Hot Fuzz. They are not in the Scott Pilgrim vs. the World movie, but the audience loved their presence all the same. Oh, and Cera sported a Captain America suit– an obvious homage to Chris Evans, who is off filming Captain America.

The cast discussed how they spent months training for fight scenes, and how some had to learn to play musical instruments. Wright spoke of filming in Toronto, the setting of Scott Pilgrim and home to members of the cast and crew. He also announced that the movie will be in 2D, to which he added, “How do you feel about watching a film with sunglasses on?”

There was talk of Ubisoft’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World video game. The game has a retro style, similar to old school 8-bit games. If you haven’t noticed, there are many tie-ins to video games throughout the film. Sound effects from Tekken, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Zelda can be heard; Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) mentions “getting a life” as he snatches a floating 8-bit sprite version of his face from the air; a tag line for the film was “This summer it’s on like Donkey Kong.”

After introductions, discussions and Q&A, Wright jumped off stage and led hundreds of fans with 1Up buttons to the Balboa Theater for a special screening of the movie. Fans fortunate enough to posses the buttons excitedly marched with Wright to the theater, while the rest will have to wait for August 13, when the film will appear in theaters– unless you catch the showings tomorrow and Saturday.

UPDATED 10:25 7/23: Video, as expected, has started to leak out. Here’s the cast coming on stage from an… interesting angle.

“Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour” was Midnight last night

“Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour” was Midnight last night

Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour was released last night at midnight in select locations and is already at #16 on Amazon’s best seller lists. According to Oni Press, over 150 comic shops all over the United States and Canada participated in early release parties. Oni said fans had “midnight releases to all day shindigs, costume contest, door
prizes, give-aways, rock concerts, and street parties” to enjoy. Creator Bryan Lee O’Malley joined the fun at Toronto’s block party, the center for everything Scott Pilgrim. O’Malley had a signing while bands Hurry Hard, Chang-A-Lang, Sister, and Soft & Wet rocked out in the spirit of the Scott Pilgrim universe.

This is the sixth and final volume in O’Malley’s graphic novel series. The story revolves around Scott Pilgrim, a slacker who plays bass guitar in the indie rock band Sex Bob-Omb. Pilgrim falls for Ramona Flowers, but he must defeat her seven evil exes before he can date her. The fun, entertaining series gained a huge fan following, making way for more media donning the Scott Pilgrim title. Ubisoft is currently developing the Scott Pilgrim vs. The World video game, which has a retro gaming aesthetic and a musical sound track by Anamanagichi, a popular 8-bit punk band. The highly anticipated Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
movie
will arrive in theaters August 13 this summer.

Mr. Pilgrim will also make an appearance at the San Diego Comic Con on Thursday, July 22, where a panel with the Scott Pilgrim movie cast, director Edgar Wright, and creator O’Malley will talk about the upcoming film and show a sneak peek of the “epic of epicness.”

Although the Scott Pilgrim graphic novel series has come to an end, fans still have a movie and video game to anticipate. If you missed the early release parties, pick up a copy of Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour today.

Linda Gold: 1949-2010

Linda Gold: 1949-2010

Linda Gold, beloved wife of ComicMix editor in chief Mike Gold, mother of assistant editor Adriane Nash, and frequent commenter on this site, died this morning of a heart attack. She was 60 years old.

She was the biggest Green Lantern fan I’ve ever known, with a particular fondness for Guy Gardner.

She knew more about jazz artists of the 20’s and 30’s than anyone who didn’t have a radio show.

She was smart as a whip, and could debate anything with passion and verve.

She was a treasure, and was appreciated by everybody who knew her.

We all miss her very much.

More details to come.

UPDATE 1:30 PM EDT 5/30: Thank you for all of your good words and memories. Various tributes and reminiscences are also up at Linda’s and Mike’s Facebook pages.

Challengers Comics in Chicago has gone one step beyond and created the Linda Gold Memorial Selection:

a designation we will give any book we feel brings as much wonder and
joy to its reader as Linda gave to our lives.

Their first selection is Scott Pilgrim, Vol. 1: Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life
.

UPDATE 6/2: Should you be so inclined and your circumstances allow, charitable
donations could be made in Linda’s name to The Hero Initiative, http://www.heroinitiative.org/, or to the Comic Book Legal Defense
Fund (CBLDF), http://cbldf.org/.

Brad Bird Confirmed for ‘M:I 4’

Brad Bird Confirmed for ‘M:I 4’

Actor/producer Tom Cruise confirmed for Empire Magazine that the talented Brad Bird will make his feature film debut with Mission: Impossible 4. Cruise will return to lead the IM Force’s field leader, Ethan Hunt, for the big budget Paramount Pictures release.

The studio initially announced a May 2011 release date but either the production schedule or competition caused them to alter the release to December 16, 2011.

J.J. Abrams, who stepped in to salvage the floundering film franchise by directing the third installment, returns as a producer. The screenplay will be by Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec from a story by Abrams and Cruise.

Cruise told the English magazine, “The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, Ratatouille – Brad is enormously talented and JJ and I are having a blast, cranking away. We’re having a lot of fun. I like working with people I just love hanging out with. You get to hang out and laugh and talk stories and movies and technology: what are we going to do?”

Apparently Bird was in contention with Edgar Wright for the assignment but his work on August’s  Scott Pilgrim versus the World kept him from being signed. “I dig Edgar. Very nice guy, very smart, very talented, I’d really like to do something with him,” said Cruise. “I met Edgar on the set of Mission 3. Simon Pegg and those guys are hilarious. I love Shaun of the Dead. It’s amazing. But we’re working with Brad right now. I don’t know if I’m allowed to talk about it but everything’s signed… Brad is doing it.”

The film will open against some genre competition during the holidays with Paramount’s The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn and Disney’s The Bear and the Bow also coming out in December.

Chris Evans cast as Captain America

Chris Evans cast as Captain America

Variety reports that square-jawed lady-killer Chris Evans will be under the winged-mask of Captain America for Marvel’s upcoming The First Avenger: Captain America, set to hit theaters next summer.

Also noted from Variety: Evan’s deal looks to be for at least three pictures, not including the already mentioned “Avengers” film set to come out in 2012. Evans will be hurling his shield next to Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, as well as Edward Norton’s green skinned goliath, the Hulk.

The First Avenger: Captain America also has cast the neo-hating turned neo-nazi, Hugo Weaving as the villainous Red Skull.

Of course, comic book fans should not be surprised by Mr. Evan’s turn as a hero, given his lengthy comic book twinged resumé. Starring first as the hot headed Johnny Storm in the less-than-beloved pair of Fantastic Four pictures, Evans will also debut as the alliterated Lucas Lee in the upcoming Scott Pilgrim flick, as well as the jacked-mouth hacker Jake Jensen in the forthcoming Losers movie coming out this April.

So, ComicMix fans, what do you think? Does Evans belong wielding the shield? Where do you think Stan Lee will cameo in the Cap film? Do you think Ben Grimm will enjoy a quieter Baxter building while Johnny get’s a little patriotic? Tell us what you think, soldier!

Hollywood wrapup — Iron Man, Spider-Man, Scott Pilgrim, Cowboy Bebop

Hollywood wrapup — Iron Man, Spider-Man, Scott Pilgrim, Cowboy Bebop

A pile of Hollywood related comic items I didn’t get to this week, so let me get them out of the way:

* Emily Blunt in Iron Man 2?

* Keanu Reeves will be starring in a live-action version of Cowboy Bebop. It’s just been confirmed as going into production for Fox.

* The cast of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World expands.

* Sam Raimi wants Morbius for Spider-Man 4? By the time it comes out in 2011, everyone will think he’s ripping off Twilight.

* And finally, a cast photo for Wolverine:
