‘Eclipse’, ‘Toy Story’ Income Gone With The Wind

‘Eclipse’, ‘Toy Story’ Income Gone With The Wind

This was not a great week for big
box office blockbusters. Let’s look at this week’s quarter-billion dollar money
machine.

Twilight: Eclipse took
a dive!

Okay, let’s define “dive.” Eclipse made $161 million in its first
five days, and that’s good by anybody’s standards. But… It brought in 43% of those bucks in its first day. After that,
it was just another big movie. Even the opening day revenue was down 6% from New Moon. So where did this drop-off
come from?

Women.

No kidding. They accounted for 80%
of the New Moon audience, but only
65% of the Eclipse audience thus far.
But $161 million, plus another $100 million overseas (that’s more than a
quarter-billion bucks, or $36,000 a minute!),
seems like a lot of money, doesn’t it?

In Hollywood, perception rules the
day and reality doesn’t save your job. Eclipse
was expected to exceed the $200 million brought in by Transformers Two during its had a five-day start. If you don’t make
your projections, you’re a failure – at least temporarily.

So is Eclipse a bomb? Certainly not. Is it a disappointment? Yes it is…
thus far. The missing repeat business enjoyed by the previous two Twilight movies might come in
eventually, but one thing is sadly clear: the Twilight saga has lost some if its bite.

Now you’d have to be some sort of
Russian commie to hate Toy Story 3,
wouldn’t you? Well, the Rooskies certainly did not love Toy Story 3. It bombed. It took in less than $5 million in its
first ten days. Shrek Forever After
did almost eight times that business.

According to the Los Angeles Times, adults found Toy Story 3 to be too much of a kids
flick. Okay, fine. But does Russia have a shortage of children? As it turns
out, yes it does. Russia has endured terrible heat waves in its metropolitan
areas, and kids have been hustled out to cooler climates. Still, $5 million
sucks. Toy Story 3 was the first of
the series to be released in Russia, so perhaps the adults felt lost in the
backstory. I saw Home Alone 2 without
seeing the first one, so maybe I can understand that.

Well, maybe not.

It’s always fun to watch Disney
take one in the neck, but I can’t help but believe that bombing in Russia would
have made Walt Disney a happy man.

‘Twilight Saga: Eclipse’ goes IMAX

‘Twilight Saga: Eclipse’ goes IMAX

It was almost inevitable.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, the third movie in Summit Entertainment’s adaptations of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight books, will be released in IMAX theatres simultaneously with the movie’s nationwide release on June 30, 2010. The first Twilight movie to be released in IMAX theatres, IMAX Corporation and Summit Entertainment will digitally re-master Eclipse to enhance both the image and sound quality. Eclipse once again stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner.

The interesting question: for how long? New Moon had a huge opening and didn’t last long, so it will only stay in IMAX for two weeks, then be replaced on July 16th by Christopher Nolan’s Inception.

‘Twilight Saga: New Moon’ takes opening day gross record from ‘Dark Knight’, midnight record from ‘Harry Potter 6’

Apparently, some people like people who dress up as bats less than people who should be turning into bats (if they were real vampires).

Taking the record for the biggest one-day and opening gross, The Twilight Saga: New Moon raked in an estimated $72.7 million on approximately 8,500 screens at 4,024 sites, according to BoxOfficeMojo. The Dark Knight was the previous title holder with $67.2 million on around 9,300 screens at 4,366 sites. New Moon also took the midnight opening record, taking in an estimated $26.27 million at 3,514 sites showing the movie starting at 12:01 a.m. Friday. The previous benchmark was Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which conjured $22.2 million at 3,003 sites for its midnight opening.

At $158.4 million, The Dark Knight still holds the record for biggest weekend (Friday-Saturday-Sunday) ever… so far.

‘Twilight’ author Stephenie Meyer gets her own biography comic

If you can’t license the characters, biograph the creator.

Stephenie Meyer, the author of the Twilight book series, will be the focus of Bluewater Productions‘ latest Female Force comic book. Two versions of the biographic comic about Meyer will debut just before Summit Entertainment’s November 20, 2009 release of The Twilight Saga: New Moon

Written by Ryan Burton, the Female Force: Stephenie Meyer comic will be narrated, according to Burton, by “a very recognizable and iconic vampire”, but probably not one you have to pay licensing fees for.  The comic will be available as a standard 22-page edition and also as a 40-page collector’s edition that will feature a range of extras such as a history of Forks. Dave MacNeil is drawing the book, with cover art created by Vinnie Tartamella.

Previous Female Force subjects include Hilary Clinton, Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Sarah Palin and Princess Diana.

#SDCC: Twilight Saga: New Moon panel with Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner

#SDCC: Twilight Saga: New Moon panel with Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner

As reported here earlier today, Twilight fans practically took over San Diego Comic-Con in a desperate attempt to get to be seated for the Twilight Saga: New Moon panel. Thousands of fans, many of them screaming with excitement, camped out in the hopes of being in the front row when the stars of the film, Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner took the stage. Place-holding in line has become a huge controversy, and there were reports of minor scuffles over such disagreements  as anxious fans worried about where their place in the panel might be. The convention allowed the campers to come in a freshen-up in the morning, and many had high hopes of being spotted in the crowd by their favorite heartthrob. There are even reports of moms offering cash to people seated toward the front in exchange for switching seats with their daughters. By all accounts, the hours leading up to the panel could only be described as Frenzy, and New Moon has been a top trending topic off and on all day on Twitter. Right before the panel, many heartbroken fans were tweeting their sadness at not being able to get into the panel.

Earlier in the day, there was a press conference where the actors were asked questions about the upcoming film. As press pictures were released, flamewars began as some fans became catty about the seating order and appearance of the stars (check out some of the comments at this site). All of the stars seemed to be slightly bewildered by the the full media onslaught of the press conference. Pattinson described the convention as “terrifying” but was reportedly more talkative than at last year’s con. When asked about their new-found fame, Lautner replied “None of us saw it coming, and this past year has been a ride for us.”

In the hour prior to the panel, a rumor began to circulate that Robert Pattinson would not be in attendance at the panel. The Twitterverse did a collective sigh of relief when he was apparently spotted with some guards about 15 minutes before start time. Once the panel began, sites seemed to be crashing from overload left and right. The second someone posted a link to an alleged live feed, that site was overloaded with fans hoping to get a peek at what was going on. All accounts were likening the screaming crowds to the cacophony of fans at early Beatles concerts.

‘Firefly’ stars reunite for ‘V’; Sheen joins ‘Twilight Saga: New Moon’

‘Firefly’ stars reunite for ‘V’; Sheen joins ‘Twilight Saga: New Moon’

Spring is in the air… and lots of actors are finding work.

Frost/Nixon’s Michael Sheen has joined the cast of The Twilight Saga: New Moon. The now-filming sequel has added Sheen as Aro, the head vampire of the Italian Volturi vampire clan. Summit Entertainment will release the eagerly awaited adaptation of the Stephenie Meyer best-seller on November 20.

Elisabeth Shue takes a detour from her usual dramatic fare to appear in Alexandre Aja’s remake of Piranha 3D. The actress will play "Sheriff Julie Forester, a take-charge authority figure in the community of Lake Victoria" according to Moviehole, and the mother of one of the lead characters. Look for this in March 2010

While we weren’t looking, the cast for the revamp of V has filled out with some very familiar names which improve our hopes for the ABC pilot.  The formal network announcement will be May 19 but we’re crossing our fingers.  The proposed series, based on Kenneth Johnson’s original concepts, now features Elizabeth Mitchell (Lost), Morena Baccarin (Firefly), Joel Gretsch (The 4400), Morris Chestnut (Ladder 49), Alan Tudyk (Firefly), Scott Wolf (Party of Five) David Richmond-Peck (The Day The Earth Stood Still), Laura Vandervoort (Smallville), Lourdes Benedicto (The Nine), and Christopher Shyer (The Day).

Finally, the seaons finale for Smallville will guest star Impulse (Kyle Gallner) and Black Canary (Alaina Huffman).

Dakota Fanning cast in ‘The Twilight Saga: New Moon’

Dakota Fanning is about to go all Volturi on your ass.

The 15 year old actress is set to sparkle– literally– in Summit Entertainment’s movie The Twilight Saga: New Moon, the sequel to its Twilight film, according to People.com.  Fanning will take on the role of Jane, a particularly evil vampire in the guise of a sweet young thing who is a member of the Volturi sect of vampires.

Principal photography for New Moon is scheduled to begin in Vancouver later this month, with the release date close behind on November 20, 2009.  New Moon is shooting back-to-back with The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (June 30, 2010), the third movie in the saga that is based on Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight books.

‘Twilight’ sequel keeps Taylor Lautner as Jacob Black

‘Twilight’ sequel keeps Taylor Lautner as Jacob Black

Twilight fans can rest easy with news that Taylor Lautner will return to play Jacob Black again in New Moon, Summit Entertainment’s movie sequel to Twilight, according to New Moon director Chris Weitz via Twilight book series author Stephenie Meyer:

My first priority was always what was best for New Moon—what was going to give us the best possible movie. I’m truly thrilled that Taylor was the one who proved to the director, to Summit, and to me that he is the best possible Jacob we could have. And I’m very much looking forward to seeing what he’s going to bring to Jacob’s character this year.

Production starts soon on New Moon, which is set for release November 20, 2009.

In New Moon, Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) is devastated by the abrupt departure of her vampire love, Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) but her spirit is rekindled by her growing friendship with the irresistible Jacob Black.  Suddenly she finds herself drawn into the world of the werewolves, ancestral enemies of the vampires, and finds her loyalties tested.

Fox Going to the Wolves in ‘Bitches’

Fox Going to the Wolves in ‘Bitches’

Fox network has announced work has begun on a new hour-long series, Bitches, described by The Hollywood Reporter as “a dramedy about a quartet of female friends in New York who are werewolves.”

Given the November 2009 release of both The Wolfman and the lycanthropes in New Moon, plus the Big Bad Wolf in NBC’s Fables project, it looks to be a hairy fall.

Michael Dougherty (X2: X-Men United) is writing the script for Warner Bros. TV which received a pilot script commitment complete with penalties if no film is shot. Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts (Pepper Dennis) will serve as executive producers alongside Dougherty.

Dougherty wrote about werewolves in Trick ‘r Treat a Warner Bros, film that got dumped earlier this year and will be a direct-to-DVD release.
