Preview: ‘Watchmen: The End is Nigh’

As is typical with any comic to film adaptation, there’s bound to be a video game tie-in, and (sadly for some) Watchmen is no exception.  But this isn’t your typical cheap cash-in on the film or graphic novel’s name…at least, that’s what the developers, filmmakers, and even some of the comic’s creators would have you believe.  Watchmen: The End is Nigh takes place in 1972, over a decade before the events in the graphic novel and film, and tries to explore the days when Rorschach and Nite Owl were a crime fighting duo (just five years before the Keene act outlaws vigilantes and costumed heroes).  As such, don’t expect to see the events of the film or book here…but fans will definitely have something familiar to look forward to.

As detailed in last month’s issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly, Zack Snyder (the film’s director) and Dave Gibbons (the graphic novel’s co-creator and artist) are both involved in the making of the game on a purely collaborative level.  The game’s script itself is being penned by comic scribe (and creator Allan Moore’s mentor) Len Wein, who also served as editor on the graphic novel.  It’s these elements that the Denmark developer Deadline Games hopes will separate the title from other such games in the genre.  That and the fact that it won’t be sold in stores at all: the title will be available exclusively as an episodic download beginning in March for Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and the Steam network on PC.

‘Lone Justice: Crash’ debuts today on ComicMix — for free!

From the creators of the Harvey-nominated EZ Street comes a hero for the ages, in the thrilling pulp adventure Lone Justice: Crash!

Lone Justice: Crash! is the new graphic novel from the Harvey award nominated team of Robert Tinnell and Mark Wheatley.  It’s the sideways sequel to the Harvey Award nominated EZ STREET graphic novel, also perpetrated by the Tinnell and Wheatley team. Why sideways? In EZ STREET, the central characters Scott and Danny Fletcher are attempting to create a graphic novel.  And LONE JUSTICE: CRASH! is the graphic novel they create.

ComicMix Six: What you need to know about ‘Lone Justice: Crash!’

LONE JUSTICE: CRASH! is the new graphic novel from the Harvey Award nominated team of Robert Tinnell and Mark Wheatley.  It will begin right here on ComicMix on Monday, January 12th.  And in the interest of making all things EZ, we present the top 6 essential things you should know before you start reading:

1) LONE JUSTICE: CRASH! is a two-fisted, pulp adventure set in the year 1930, just after the big Wall Street crash in 1929.  It is a time when there is great uncertainty in life, work and politics.  But it was also a time when pulp magazines were introducing vital new characters to the public that we would eventually come to call Super Heroes.  So, step aside, Doc Savage, the Shadow, and the Spider – and make way for Lone Justice!

2) LONE JUSTICE: CRASH! is the sideways sequel to the Harvey Award nominated EZ STREET graphic novel, also perpetrated by the Tinnell and Wheatley team. Why sideways? In EZ STREET, the central characters Scott and Danny Fletcher are attempting to create a graphic novel.  And LONE JUSTICE: CRASH! is the graphic novel they create.

3) Yes, that means Tinnell and Wheatley are taking credit for the work of two fictional characters.  They have no shame.

4) Maybe you don’t need to know that the core ideas behind Lone Justice’s tribulations in CRASH! can be found in the pages of EZ STREET – particularly in the character of the homeless man young Scott and Danny befriended.  But if you are aware it just might make the reading experience a little richer.  No, really – there are parallels to life events in EZ STREET all through LONE JUSTICE: CRASH!

5) You should probably be aware of just how devastating the Depression was on the United States and its residents.  It was much worse than what is going on today, so far.  Tent cities – known as Hoovervilles (after President Herbert Hoover) really existed.  Hopefully, there will not be any Bushvilles before LONE JUSTICE: CRASH! finishes running on ComicMix.

6) There were often official efforts to keep transient homeless folks out of cities and towns and even entire states.  These were people who were just trying to survive.  But California, for example, would try to keep people from pouring into the state – and they were prone to use force.

You can start reading LONE JUSTICE: CRASH! right here on ComicMix on Monday, January 12th.

Marvel Announces Kid Friendly ‘Wolverine’ Graphic Novel

Marvel Announces Kid Friendly ‘Wolverine’ Graphic Novel

Clearly inspired by Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Marvel is releasing a hardcover graphic novel, Wolverine.  The press note says, “That’s right Bub, Marvel is proud to unveil Todd Nauck’s cover to Wolverine, an all-new hardcover graphic novel presenting the history of Wolverine’s life from his days as wimpy kid to just how he became one of Marvel’s deadliest heroes. In stores this April, experience the most unique look ever inside the mind of everyone’s favorite Canadian in Wolverine!”

The question must be asked: is it right to release a kid-friendly Wolverine book just weeks before the not-kid-friendly Wolverine movie opens?

Thanksgiving Week GN Sales Dip 14.7%

Thanksgiving Week GN Sales Dip 14.7%

The graphic novel field saw sales drop 14.7% compared with Thanksgiving week 2007 according to figures released by Nielsen’s BookScan. Total units sold, according to ICv2, were 244,000 compared with 286,000 a year previous. The drop is in contrast to the 6% increase in total book sales. The increase was a blip after many weeks of steady declines which has led to massive layoffs throughout the publishing field in just the last week.

ICv2’s analysis notes that, “First, pieces aren’t dollars.  As the top of the graphic novel bestseller list has become more accommodating to non-manga titles recently, the mix has moved toward higher cover prices, which may mean an increase in the average cover price that could help offset some declines in piece sales.  Second, there’s an increasing amount of graphic novel activity off the graphic novel charts, as publishers seek to group their kids or young adult titles in those departments, rather than in the graphic novel department.  Third, the comic store market appears to be behaving differently from the bookstores.  And last, one week does not a season make.”

Nickelodeon has created their own Comic Book Awards, inviting fans to come vote in eight different categories during the entire month of December.

The categories include Best Hair, Best Guest Character, Cutest Comic Character , Best Comic, Favorite Manga, Grossest Thing in Comics, Favorite Fantasy Graphic Novel and Favorite Comic Strip.  Nominees are an eclectic choice culled from comics, comic strips, graphic novels, and pop culture. Our toughest choice was for best hair, without Wolverine in the mix.  We opted for Veronica Lodge.

The winners will be announced at the website on March 17 and appear in the April issue of Nickelodeon magazine.

Disney has signed Colin Trevorrow (Stealing Time) to write the adaptation of Scott Christian Sava’s Pet Robots. The studio optioned the graphic novel in 2007.

Described by The Hollywood Reporter as “a high-tech comedy set in the present, Pet Robots revolves around futuristic robots that fall into the hands of the least likely group of people.”

Sava founded Blue Dream Studios to produce animation and graphic novels before selling it to IDW which continues to publish the graphic novel. Trevorrow sold the screenplay to Tester to DreamWorks, in addition to Time which is currently with Walt Becker at Sony.

Chris Bender and JC Spink of Benderspink will produce.
