Spider-Man, Heroes, and Free Comics… Oh My!

Spider-Man, Heroes, and Free Comics… Oh My!

If there ever was a best week ever in Pop Culture, this is it! Spider-Man 3 is moments away from opening, Heroes is heating up and Free Comic Book Day rolls in on the weekend!

The ComicMix Big Broadcast for Tuesday starts out with a full shopping kist of comics and DVDs you can’t miss, ranging from the end of 52 to the Best Of Fletch – plus news on Magneto on the big screen, Adult Swim expanding on the small screen and Scarface in the comics. We also trip back in time to when Jed Clampett was a private eye!

Please note: The Heroes review contains spoilers. It comes at the end of the podcast, so if you TiVo’ed it, you might want to bail at the sound of Matt’s voice.

Spider-Man Week in New York City

Spider-Man Week in New York City

Oh boy oh boy oh boy! It’s here at last! Some people love Christmas in New York, some live for the July 4th fireworks, some like the Thanksgiving Day Parade, some people even love to freeze their butts off in Times Square on New Year’s Eve – but nothing in the world compares to Spider-Man Week! Nothing in the whole wide wo–

–thank God, I was able to rip that brain-sucking parasite off my body.

Anyway, here’s the list of events. Some fun stuff, including activities at the Bronx Zoo, the American Museum of Moving Images is showing episodes of the 60’s animated series, Peter David is signing copies of the novelization Thursday at Midtown Comics, all leading up to Free Comic Book Day– oh, and the US premiere of Spider-Man 3 in Peter Parker’s home borough, Queens. We’ll be covering some of the more interesting activities here.

FCBD up north, eh?

Chris Butcher has announced that Scott McCloud and family are taking a little detour from their Making Comics 50-state sojourn and heading up to Toronto for Free Comic Book Day, where Scott is scheduled to give a talk at the University of Toronto’s OISE Theatre sponsored by the U of T newspaper The Varsity and The Beguiling bookstore.  All appropriate info can be found on Chris’ blog.

The McClouds are currently somewhere in the vicinity of Neil Gaiman’s house, as reported by both Neil and Ivy (Scott’s wife).

Super Librarian is coming!

Lots of comic shops are gearing up for May 5’s Free Comic Book Day, but NJ is doing them one better — the New Jersey State Library system is sponsoring Super Librarian Free Comic Book Day statewide on May 5.

NJSL and INFOLINK (the Eastern New Jersey Regional Library Cooperative) are working with youth service librarians to conduct a statewide public awareness campaign, which includes the release of the Super Librarian comic book on FCBD. (This teaser video celebrates super librarians in NJ and elsewhere.)  Local libraries will also have teens plan events highlighting how their libraries are meeting the needs of young adults in their communities and distribute free copies of the comic in Spanish and English versions.  FCBD will also kick off a YouTube comic contest, where teens can create a video or draw a comic about why they love their library, with one lucky entrant winning an mp3 player.

The librarians’ organization says, "We will be working with Diamond Comics to promote the entire event statewide and will be creating press pieces designed to give greater visibility to how our NJ libraries are meeting the needs of teens," and it looks as though this venture is already paying off.  For instance, the Courier News reports on how the Comic Cafe store in Warren will be supplying free comic books for the Bernardsville Public Library to give away on FCBD.  Let us know if you see any other local articles.  As for us, we’ll probably be in Rockland County for FCBD, but no reason we can’t drive over the border and check out some comic stores — and libraries — there!

The Spider-Man Week in NYC site has gone live!  Sony’s site features an interactive map, countdown clock, events listing, links and pretty much all the bells and whistles you’d expect.  Spider-Man Week officially begins on Monday, April 30.

And yes, there’s a link to Free Comic Book Day.  Looks like this is one year where it absolutely paid off to link FCBD to a comic book movie opening!
