‘The Looking Glass Wars’ movie adaptation in the works

‘The Looking Glass Wars’ movie adaptation in the works

A movie adaptation of author/producer Frank Beddor’s young adult book trilogy The Looking Glass Wars is in the works.  During an appearance to promote the third book in the series, ArchEnemy, on Good Morning America on Friday, Beddor said he was working with producer Charles Roven (The Dark Knight, Rex Libris) to bring The Looking Glass Wars to the big screen.

The series has already spun off a graphic novel version and the spinoff series Hatter M, written by Beddor and Liz Cavalier with art by Ben Templesmith in volume 1 and Sami Makkonen in volume 2. A lengthy preview of the series can be found at HatterM.com.

‘Wanted’ director Timur Bekmambetov produces ‘Black Lightning’ movie – see the trailer now!

All right, so Black Lightning is the translation of the movie title Черная молния from Russian.

And it probably won’t have that name when it gets released in the United States, as it has as much to do with the DC Comics character created by Tony Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden as Mr. Miyagi’s protege has to do with the Legion of Super-Heroes. (Hmm. Maybe not the best example there.)

But it’s still a great deal of fun. Take a look:

Now, if you actually want to see more work from Black Lightning’s creators, we’re happy to show you the latest chapter of The Original Johnson by Trevor Von Eeden here on ComicMix just up today (the print edition is available for pre-order now in the Diamond catalog, hint hint) and you can visit Tony’s web site for great reviews and commentary.

#SDCC: James Cameron presents ‘Avatar’

#SDCC: James Cameron presents ‘Avatar’

In the grand hall denoted only as “H”, swarms of Comic-Con goers were given a treat of global proportions. 24 minutes of James Cameron’s upcoming Avatar was screened for those on hand. Of course all recording devices were banned from use, but that didn’t keep bloggers away from their terminals as soon as the panel was finished. Here’s the low down of what we know was shown:

Jake Sully (being played by Sam Worthington) is shown entering a military briefing, confined to a wheelchair. We’re reassured by a gruff officer that it’s his job to keep them all alive… but (dun-dun-dunnnnnn) he assures the soliders in the room, including Jake, that he won’t be successful.

From here, we move quickly to a lab where we meet Jake’s ‘Avatar’, an artificial/alien body that will be piloted by Jake after his DNA is combined (via the Avatar program, natch) with the Na’vi alien race. We meet Dr. Grace Augustine (played by sci-fi fan favorite, Sigourney Weaver),  who helps load Jake into the Avatar machine, after a bit of playful banter.

Cue the special effects. We enter Oz, err, Pandora.

Air, Water, Earth, Fire.  Four nations tied by destiny when the Fire Nation launches a brutal war against the others. A century has passed with no hope in sight to change the path of this destruction. Caught between combat and courage, Aang (Noah Ringer) discovers he is the lone Avatar with the power to manipulate all four elements. Aang teams with Katara (Nicola Peltz), a Waterbender, and her brother, Sokka (Jackson Rathbone), to restore balance to their war-torn world.

The Last Airbender, a live action version of the Nickelodeon animated series Avatar, is scheduled to be released on July 2, 2010. Take a look:

Preview: ‘V’ 2.0

Like we haven’t had enough science fiction shows from the 80’s remade lately… here’s the trailer from ABC’s upfronts for V:

Yes, that’s Elizabeth Mitchell from Lost and Morena Baccarin from Firefly with the butch haircut.

Interestingly, some people are finding current political metaphor in it, such as David Sirota in Salon:

Am I crazy or does this preview make the show seem like a
not-so-subtle fringe-right-wing criticism of Obama and Obama followers?

In questioning Obama’s citizenship and heritage, conservatives
have always portrayed Obama as an alien visitor. They’ve also
constantly implied that behind Obama’s friendly veneer are sinister
motives – and they seem to believe that while most of the public are
gullible fools believing in Obama as a savior, they and their tea-party
protestors see the “real truth” of those motives.

Now, didn’t I basically just describe that preview?

And James Poniewozik from Time:

Remake of the classic alien-invasion miniseries plays in the trailer,
weirdly, like an allegory of the Obama election: aliens come to Earth,
promise “hope” and “change” (words actually used), inspire cult-like
devotion, but have creepy intent and are secretly lizards. Maybe I’m
reading too much into it. But it has potential to be Glenn Beck’s new
favorite show.

The original metaphor was the Aliens were based on the Nazis. Now it’s Obama? Terrific.

‘The Dark Knight’ alternate trailer

‘The Dark Knight’ alternate trailer

Yes, yes. Highest grossing movie of 2008. Second highest of all time. A billion dollars in box office when all is said and done. And yet– it could have made even more money, if only they’d worked with the studio with the best batting average in the business…

We all know it’s about the toys anyway, right?

Hat tip: Mark Waid.
