Johnny Depp returns to his iconic role of Captain Jack Sparrow in an action-packed tale of truth, betrayal, youth and demise. When she forces him aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn’t know who to fear more: Blackbeard or the woman from his past.

Going to be interesting just how close it comes to the book it’s allegedly based on, which is basically a horror novel…
Ummm – “…interesting to see…”

On imdb, it’s good to see that on the credits there they at least acknowledge Tim Power’s original book, ON STRANGER TIDES. One of my fave of Powers’ work and very original. I suspect there will be only bits and pieces used in the movie, but it has to mean Powers makes some money off it which is cool.
I hope it happens, Big John, but as nice as it’d be if Tim got some money off it, it’d be equally so if Disney hired him to adapt the script, or at least if people picked up the original book. Preferably in really huge quantities.

Harlan, among others, has been bitching for decades about how SFFWA members kinda shy away from both Hollywood and comics, either claiming it’s beneath them or that they can’t write like that. Writing’s writing, it’s just a matter of learning the form and/or genre. I’ve had good writers tell me that selling stuff in Hollywood takes too much effort, chasing sales. But that’s why you get an agent, so they can do the legwork. Years ago, SFFWA tried to block the Dramatic Nebula, because they’d recognize WGA when WGA recognized them. Stupid, as WGA is based on form, not genre… but as we’ve all noticed, a lot of writers get a bit tunnelvisioned. Aw, hell, they have their heads up their asses. And it’s all over. However it works out, I want this to mean piles of Benjies for Tim. Henry Piper and Tom Artis are proof that you can starve for your art. And quite often die for it.
.
Sorry about the rant. Just tired and cranky. At least I don’t have to watch the Titans get their asses beat today.

The pictures look good and I expect that I’ll enjoy it as much as I enjoyed the first three “Pirates” movies.
I didn’t know that the script was based on a novel. I’ll see if I can find a copy to read soon. Thanks.
Just be ready for the fact that it’s pretty much a horror novel…

If it IS something different, then I welcome that. I liked the first “Pirates” movie, the second was okay…the third was lame. If they move away from that, but take what originally made them great, it’ll be worth watching.
