Is a Live-Action Blue Beetle TV Series on the Horizon?
When Geoff Johns, DC Entertainment’s Chief Creative Officer, disclosed on his Twitter page that DC and Warner Bros were “hoping to develop a live-action show” starring the Blue Beetle, the news spread aggressively quick. To alleviate fans’ growing excitement and curiosity, Johns posted photos and more news about the proposal on DC’s official blog, The
Source. The site has indeed been the source of Blue Beetle related hubbub, as screenshots of Blue Beetle’s transformation sequence have spread widely across the net. Johns and his team created a clip showing Jamie Reyes’ scarab activating his suit, a clip that Johns will showcase at the San Diego Comic-Con.
With Smallville ending after its next season, WB could replace it with another DC Universe television series. However, would a Blue Beetle live-action show be received as well as Smallville was? Superman is an iconic character, while Blue Beetle is comparatively lesser known. There is also the issue of the Blue Beetle comic book cancellations. Some speculate that if Blue Beetle comics ultimately get canned due to poor sales, then how well would a television series fare? On the other hand, Blue Beetle gained a loyal fan following after Infinite Crisis back in 2006. Reyes also made several appearances in Cartoon Network’s Batman: The Brave and the Bold. Johns tweeted, “Blue Beetle’s going to appear in most of the Brave and the
Bold’s this year,” which is promising news for the superhero. The new publicity may give Blue Beetle a chance to make it to the small screen.
Perhaps we shouldn’t get too ahead of ourselves. Johns stated in his post on The Source, “This isn’t final. This isn’t greenlit. It’s only a test that was done.
We still have a long way to go to see if we can get this off the
ground and a lot of people to jump on board.” While it’s exciting to witness superheroes come to life, maybe we shouldn’t get our hopes up just yet with this teaser alone?
I want to see Ted Kord, not this poser
Beat me to it.I think that was a *seriously* dumb move.
Ah, Dan Garrett, how soon they forget. Here’s to Jaime. It’s time to put “the other white meat” to rest.
Two different types of characters – one magical, one not.
One well done, one not so much.
One magical, two not. Jaime’s book had charm, wit, character growth, and a great supporting cast. It also did more to establish Ted’s place in the DCU than anything written since Charlton first gave them the character.
Exile to the Teen Titans hasn’t gone so well for Mr. Reyes, but it’s not like the Justice League years did much for Mr. Kord’s future prospects either.
I was referring to Kord and Garrett, in the context of my remark and yours.
I know nothing about the new Blue Beetle – i honestly think i’ve never actually read anything with him in it.
Nor have any desire to do so.
My own favourite hispanic comic character was Marvel’s “Araña”
Arana is just another 2-dimensional teeny bopper hero now, especially with this new Young Allies book. If she was ever anything else though, I wasn’t paying attention.
“Now”? Have they brought her back? I’m not surprised by your description; when her own series was running, it got pretty messed up near the end of the run, especially the rushed and completely-inappropriate windup…
She’s the god-awful new “Nomad’s” sidekick in the back up series in Captain America, and they’re both members of the new teen-hero team book Young Allies.
Oh, and I forgot to say speaking of bad/ill-conceived replacements.
Nomad is Jack Monroe or Steve Rogers. None others!
Oh. My. Ghod.
They didn’t know what to do with her, trashed her and her storyline, and now they’re trying to turn her into a generic sidekick character?
Nowadays, when i can manage to afford a few comics/get them (the hearest comic shop is thirty miles away), it’s most likely to be DC.
Sometimes i have to remind myself why.
Got that covered for a month or so, now.
So you’ve never read about Jaime, but you agree with the conclusion that he’s a poseur?
Nope. Just that his existence was a bad idea from the get-go. Might be wonderful, for all i know, but the character was one in whom i had no investment (unlike Ted Kord) and came when i was cutting way back on my comics.

Crap, I’m on a roll here. I meant “no others.” Wish you could edit these posts.
