PULP ARK-AND THE DOORS OPENED!

Tommy Hancock, PULP ARK Founder and Coordinator
in front of the con location!

Even though the first ever PULP ARK Creators Conference/Fan Convention didn’t officially open its doors until 12 Noon Friday, a few stalwart individuals made their appearance in the humble little burg of Batesville the night prior.  Bobby Nash, writer and Conventioneer extraordinaire was the first to appear at 151 West Main Street, formerly the Batesville Grand Opera House, currently the Cinnamon Stick Restaurant and Coffee Shoppe.  Not long after Bobby came Dr. Art Sippo, one half of the Book Cave Podcast duo and author of SUN KOH: HEIR OF ATLANTIS.  Art actually stayed until the set up and rehearsal for…well, that’ll come in a bit…

Pro Se writers Ken Janssens and Lee Houston Jr at PULP ARK!

Following set up on Thursday night and meeting up with Joe Gentile from Moonstone and Nancy Hansen, Ken Janssens, and Lee Houston Jr. from Pro Se Productions, all grew quiet until the following morning.  Other faces showed up at the Comfort Suites for breakfast on Friday, including Rob Davis and Ron Fortier with Airship 27 Productions and veteran author Barry Reese and his fantastic family.  Good conversation was had by all, basically the how-are-yous and get-to-knows…then it was off to the venue!

Wayne Skiver of Age of Adventure getting ready for business!

For those who did not come, even pictures won’t do much justice to how awesomely cool the building we held PULP ARK in was.  Originally built in the 1880s, much of the original woodwork and such is still there, but its not a pristine glowing artifice.  It’s a cool, old building with an awesome below ground room.  Lovingly called ‘the dungeon’ by PULP ARKers this weekend, this room was originally the dressing rooms and props area for the Opera House and the walls are the exposed original stone.  Also, the lighting is low and the air is just slightly musty, so it gave a great ‘cavern’ feel to the room, easily everyone’s favorite part of the venue.

Wayne Reinagel’s epic table for his epic tales!

Once set up was done that morning, we’d added Scott and Patrick Cranford, Scott being a writer with Age of Adventure, and Ric Croxton, the other half of the Book Cave, and unlocked and opened at 12 Noon.  Although business was slow from a ‘fan’ standpoint, some selling took place between those of us that made up the ‘Pulp crowd’ as well as people curious as to just what a ‘Pulp Ark’ was.  The biggest plus of the day…and of the entire weekend actually…was the opportunity to meet people most of us had never physically met before and the resulting fellowship.  Not to mention the ideas…ohhh, the ideas that blossomed.

Dr. Art Sippo (left) and Derrick Ferguson at PULP ARK

Most of our other guests and such ventured in in the late evening, including Derrick Ferguson with Pulpwork Press, Carol Fuller Samelson, Bob Kennedy, Van Plexico with White Rocket Books, Wayne Reinagel with Knightraven Studios, writer Terry Alexander, artist Pete Cooper, Pulp Dealer David White, Springfield Comics’ Ron Hamilton, and Megan Smith, writer for Pro Se Productions.

OK, so Domino Lady on the right…
But who is that masked adventuress with her? hmmmm…

Also, PULP ARK had a couple of visitors on this first day, visitors of the female AND masked variety.  One was very familiar to most Pulp fans in her black DOMINO mask and her LADY like dress and cape.  The other, however, was a mystery for much of the convention….one that revealed its bubbly, actiony adventury self later…

The official programming began at 4:30 PM with…well, that’ll wait until the next report, now won’t it?  Not long, kiddoes, not long!

SIMON AND SCHUSTER INVOLVED IN PULP ARK! MALMONT GALLEY TO BE GIVEN AWAY!

Pro Se Productions, the company sponsoring PULP ARK, the first annual Pulp Convention/Creators Conference being held May 13-15 in Batesville, Ark., announced today that major publisher Simon and Schuster is one of the many publishers taking part in the activities.

According to Tommy Hancock, Pulp Ark Coordinator, Simon and Schuster is participating in Pulp Ark in order to promote the upcoming release of a major novel by Paul Malmont.  Malmont, best known for his best selling works ‘The Chinatown Death Cloud Peril’ and ‘Jack London in Paradise’ has completed ‘The Astounding, The Amazing, and the Unknown’.   This novel, a sequel to ‘Death Cloud Peril’ follows pulp writer L. Ron Hubbard on adventures into the 1950s that will rival the fantastic pulp tales the future cultural icon wrote.  The first book in this two-book series was a fictional romp involving Hubbard, H.P. Lovecraft, and pulp authors Lester Dent and Walter Gibson and others that carried them across the map and through two fisted, pulse pounding adventures.

“Malmont,” Hancock stated, “takes real life historical personages and weaves them into these realistic, yet wildly entertaining, fast paced tales.  Pulp Ark is pleased to be able to say that various items, like postcards and such, will be handed out Saturday, May 14, to commemorate the July release of the new novel.  Also, a galley copy of the new novel will be on display and given away at 4:30 Saturday afternoon.  To register for the giveaway, all you have to do is come to Pulp Ark at 151 West Main, Batesville, Ark starting at noon Friday, May 13 and put your name in the box!  The winner will be drawn on Saturday!”

For further information on the giveaway and Pulp Ark, Hancock can be reached at 870-834-4022 or proseproductions@earthlink.net.

ALL PULP CORRECTION!!

ALL PULP CORRECTION!!

A post was made on 5/1/11 that announced PULP ARK location and schedule.  ALL PULP apologizes as this was a post originally made back in January and had been opened for editing and so ALL PULP could gather information from it.  Somehow it was inadvertently posted as CURRENT news and as a result, has stirred a discussion or two up about the schedule of PULP ARK, which is not all bad.   PULP ARK Coordinator Tommy Hancock stated today that a revised, fixed schedule for PULP ARK will be released later today.  ALL PULP apologizes for any inconvenience or confusion this incident may have caused.

HANCOCK TIPS HIS HAT TO FERGUSON’S DILLON!

TIPPIN’ HANCOCK’S HAT-Reviews of All Things Pulp by Tommy Hancock

‘Dillon and The Judas Chalice’
by Derrick Ferguson
Exclusive Author Released Short Story

In the New Pulp genre, there are a handful of characters that already have some name recognition, a following of fans eager for the next drop of pulpy goodness from this harbinger of action and adventure.  One such character is Dillon, the all around jack of all trades hero type from the wonderful mind and world of Derrick Ferguson.  Every time Ferguson speaks of Dillon on the Book Cave or his blog or wherever, murmurs begin about new Dillon, the next Dillon, untold tales of Dillon, etc. and so forth.   This story is just such an event, one that was written by Ferguson as a birthday gift to all his friends and fans.

And what a gift it is!

This story opens with Dillon on a high speed chase, both chasing something and being chased by probably every law enforcement agency in the world.   After this chase ends and Dillon saves the day in his own balls to the wall fashion, he is whisked away by a notorious millionaire who tells him of a wonderful artifact-the Judas Chalice, a cup made from the silver Judas Iscariot took for betraying Jesus Christ.  This item allegedly will give its bearer whatever it wants as long as the bearer betrays those around them, the millionaire once its bearer, but now a victim of its power.  Dillon, more out of an instant affection for the vile traitorous soul he’d just met than anything else, undertakes the mission to retrieve the Chalice, stolen by the millionaire’s former right hand man and his own traitorous wife.

What ensues at this point is one of the best all around rollicking roller coasters I’ve read in the short story form in a while.  Dillon and his cohorts, including the millionaire’s own daughter, are complete and fully realized, full of facets and levels that are often hard to capture in just a few pages.    The bad guys have all they need to have as well, being driven by their own desires, but even in the end, being basically people overwhelmed by their own urges.   Explosions, gunfights, treachery, destruction, close calls, near misses, it’s all here!  And that even includes hints and rumors about a mysterious group who hold a whole lot of power and sway!

The only drawback I found to this tale was the opening.   It sets a tone for who Dillon is and what a day in his life would be like, but it was also distracting from what the story became.  It set a stage, but it didn’t connect really well to what came later and showed Dillon’s skills, but somehow was more of a ‘oh, well, ok, he can drive fast’ than something that added weight to the blockbuster that followed.  Even with that, though, this story is  CANNOT MISS because the last 2/3 or so blow most full length novels out of the water.

FOUR OUT OF FIVE TIPS OF THE HAT-The beginning might be a little clunky, but overall the story is a fist in your face and an uppercut to your gut!  Awesome stuff!

A world where heroes and villains existed since the day the market crashed and the world almost collapsed. Common people granted great powers and awesome responsibility. A world where one of them knew all the secrets, good and bad, and put them down in a book. A world where that man and that manuscript disappeared.

Until now.

YESTERYEAR is the first book in an epic series chronicling the adventures of Heroes and Villains, both in the Heroic Age of the 1920s-1950s and in the modern day. Centered around a missing manuscript that might hold information that could literally change history and even mean the end of the world, YESTERYEAR alternates between a fast paced modern storyline about the man who ends up with the legendary book and excerpts from the mythic tome itself. Marvel to pulp like adventures of glory and adrenaline and become engrossed in the humanity and horror of being a Hero.

Harlan Ellison has this classic answer he gives to people who ask the question that I suppose every writer gets asked at one time or another.  Here’s how the scenario goes:

“Where do you get your ideas?”
“There’s this Idea Factory in Schenectady.  You send them twenty-five bucks  and they’ll send you six ideas.”

It’s a lot funnier than it reads, trust me.  You have to see and hear Harlan Ellison do the routine to appreciate the gag (as I did twice) but this whole set-up is just to get to the meat and potatoes of this intro.

See, I used to think that Harlan Ellison was just making up the Idea Factory, that it was just a smart-assed way to get a laugh and get out of answering a question he no doubt got tired of answering.  But that was before I met Tommy Hancock.

And when I say ‘met’ I mean online.  Tommy is one of at least a dozen talented writers who have become good friends of mine but have never met in person.  Which makes it all the more remarkable when I realize that Tommy and I have been associated on a variety of projects for going on fifteen years now.  And even when we weren’t working on something we were staying in touch by email and Instant Messaging, keeping each other up to date on our lives and our writings.

And in all that time, I’ve come to realize that Tommy Hancock IS the Idea Factory.  Truly.  I’ve worked with the man so I know whereof I speak.  Tommy just isn’t satisfied with creating characters.  He creates entire universes.  Complete with history, mythology, technology.  Ask Tommy how SovereignCity works and he can tell you each and every inch of the city right down to the working of its waste disposal management system in such detail that by the time he’s finished he’ll have you convinced the damn place is real.  Ask him about a character he’s created.  Doesn’t matter.  Any character.  Tommy can not only tell you that character’s background but he’ll go on to talk about that character’s family tree.

Right about the time he’s telling you about that character’s great-grandmother you’ll start to get a little nervous.  Because you’ll now be getting the notion that our Mr. Hancock must be talking about real people.  He has to be.  Nobody puts that much creativity and thought and caring into characters that don’t even exist.

Do they?

Tommy Hancock does.  Because these characters do exist to him on a very real level.  Because Tommy Hancock simply doesn’t know any other way to do it.  For him to convince you of the reality of his characters and his universes he has to know it intimately.  Right down to the very last atom.

Tommy is an inexhaustible Idea Factory.  I’ve been on the receiving end of his output.  The man comes up with more ideas in a day than I can in a week.  And they’re GOOD ideas.  That’s the frightening thing.  I could easily take any one of Tommy’s ideas and get a trilogy of novels outta ‘em.  That’s how good and how detailed they are.

And at last with this book you’re holding in your trembling hands, you’re going to see what Tommy does with his ideas in a novel.  And I envy you if this is the first time you’re reading Tommy Hancock.  YESTERYEAR is truly a marvelous work that I’ve been privileged to read bits and pieces of over the years.  It’s an event that this work is at last being presented.  Especially in light of the New Pulp Renaissance going on right now.  Tommy has been out there on the front lines, getting the word out there about pulp and I’m delighted to see that he’s not only championing the works of others but now he’s got one of his own.

That’s enough of me running my mouth.  I’ve done my warm-up bit and now it’s time for the main attraction.  Dim the lights, make sure your favorite snacks and beverage of choice are within easy reach.  Put on the appropriate mood music and let Tommy Hancock take you into his universe.  He may call it YESTERYEAR but trust me, it’s as fresh and bright and exciting as all our unborn tomorrows.
