Judge Dredd Returning to the Big Screen

Judge Dredd Returning to the Big Screen

Judge Dredd, England’s long-running weekly comic feature, is returning to the screen.   At 2000 AD’s website, they had the following short announcement:

“Rebellion and 2000 AD are proud to announce that Judge Dredd is coming to a cinema near you soon!

“Together with DNA Films, the movie production company behind such great sci-fi movies such as Sunshine and 28 Weeks Later, Judge Dredd will go into production in 2009.

“Jason Kingsley, CEO and Creative Director said, ‘We can’t give away too many details at this point, but we’re looking forward to working with DNA Films to bring Judge Dredd back to the big screen’.”

The British-based DNA Films was founded by Duncan Kenworthy and Andrew Macdonald (The Beach). The company has a production partnership with Fox Searchlight Pictures, which owns 50% of DNA Films in addition to backing from the UK Film Council.

Last seen in the ill-timed 1995 release, the Sylvester Stallone movie tanked both commercially and critically. The problem was that the inventive visual world of Mega City One, first seen in 1979, was partially co-opted for the look of Blade Runner and its knockoffs.  By the time this original made it to the screen, it looked redundant rather than trendsetting. That the story and performances were lackluster didn’t help either.

Judge Dredd RPG Coming to Mongoose

Judge Dredd RPG Coming to Mongoose

Mongoose Publishing has outlined their 2009 releases with several new Judge Dredd games coming.

The new Dredd role playing game will use the rules from Mongoose’s Traveller game and will be accompanied by a hardcover Judge Dredd RPG Rulebook kicking off the new game in the summer.  Before the year is out, campaign and sourcebooks will also be release. Judge Dredd Miniatures Game will also be released and be based on the original Gangs of Mega City One.

The new deal resulted from Rebellion, the game company that currently owns 2000 AD and its characters, coming to Mongoose with a desirable offer.  The new deal allows the publishing outfit to expand their book offerings with increased color.

According to ICv2, these are the other releases coming from the company.

Traveller
In 2009 Mongoose is expanding its science fiction RPG with a number of new core books, some of which (Scoundrel, Agent) will cover characters, while others such as a Civilian and Military Vehicle Supplement and a Central Supply Catalogue.  But in 2009 Mongoose is also implementing its long term plan under which Traveller becomes not just a single setting, but a core system able to handle all science fiction gaming.  Typical of the latter is Hammer’s Slammers, a full color hardcover RPG adaptation (using the Traveller system) of David Drake’s classic science fiction series that will be available in April.

Runequest
Mongoose is planning major new initiatives for Runequest in 2010, but 2009 will see the release of some interesting volumes including a Pocket Deluxe Edition of the game as well as volume detailing the role of Guild, Factions & Cults.  Gloranthan players will get a steady stream of new releases including Mostali, Castle of Lead, Vithela and Lairs of Glorantha.  The release of the Corum and Multiverse volumes for Elric and Hawkmoon has be moved to 2010, but there will be Lankhmar volume in 2009 that will be a definitive guide to Fritz Leiber’s great creation.

Flaming Cobra

Flaming Cobra is Mongoose’s imprint for publishing and distributing third party games.  Flaming Cobra’s major initiative for the summer of 2009 is the release of Gary Gygax’s Lejendary Adventures.

Paranoia
Mongoose is planning to release a 25th Anniversary Paranoia Rulebook, which won’t replace previous editions, but will add some interesting dimensions as will two new rulebooks, one covering Int Sec Troopers and one on the High Programmers.

Conan

The major release for Mongoose’s Conan RPG in 2009 will be a Warriors Companion.  While the Conan game is compatible with D&D 3.5, Mongoose is planning to produce Wraith Recon, which places elite special forces in a fantasy setting for the new 4th Edition D&D.

Babylon 5
Mongoose has just released Lawrence Whitaker’s The Universe of Babylon 5 will allow players to play the game using Traveller rules.  A second book in this Traveller/Babylon 5 line will cover ships and vehicles.

Miniature Games
In addition to the aforementioned Judge Dredd miniatures game, Mongoose will release a new version of A Call to Arms its space combat game set in the world of Babylon 5, a V-Max Racing game and in February, the release of a new volume for Victory at Sea, Victory At Sea: Age of Dreadnoughts.

NYPD watches Rall

NYPD watches Rall

They say Iraq War II is nothing like the Vietnam War. I say bull.

Cartoonist / columnist Ted Rall reports the New York City police had been monitoring his website during the Republican National Convention in 2004, siting reports in The New York Times. He notes a "reason they can’t find bin Laden: they’re so worried about the ‘traitors’ in their midst that they’ve lost sight of America’s real enemies.’"

Well-known for his left-wing views, Ted’s editorial cartoons and newspaper columns are distributed by Universal Press Syndicate, distributor of other radical thinkers as Garfield, Ziggy, Judge Dredd, and, oh yes, Ann Coulter.

Tom Artis, R.I.P.

Tom Artis, R.I.P.

Comics artist Tom Artis died of complications from diabetes today at his home in Springfield, Illinois.

Tom had been hospitalized off and on for the past several years. According to his friend, fellow artist Doug Rice, Tom had been in a hospice since the beginning of the year. His wife Kim and children, Duke and Hope, were there with him when he died.

Tom’s many credits included Judge Dredd, Aliens vs. Predator, Justice Society of America, She-Hulk, The Spectre, Green Arrow, and his own creation for DC Comics (with friend and writer Peter Gillis), Tailgunner Jo.

I had the honor of working with Tom for several years; he was a talented artist and a good man. He will be missed greatly.

Creators are fans too

Creators are fans too

By and large comics aren’t the best-paying gig around for writers and artists, so people who make a living telling comic book stories are primarily doing it for the love of the medium.  There’s far less of a dividing line between fan and pro than there is in other entertainment media — in comics it’s always been more of a continuum.

And thus we have some nifty posts by professionals talking about the comics they love.

Colleen Doran discusses the new Legion of Super-Heroes cartoon and, erm, a missing element.  Becky Cloonan talks about her love/hate relationship with an old X-Men story as a way of reminding us that "Comics is a teeny TEEENY tiny industry. Anything you say (especially on the Internet) will get back to you."  And Chris Weston presents his sugestions of five artists whom he thinks would be perfect for Judge Dredd, and illustrates why.
