RIC MEYERS: Dragon Dynasty Mutiny!

RIC MEYERS: Dragon Dynasty Mutiny!

Poor Cynthia Rothrock. She’’s the first “gweilo (white devil)” woman to become a major star in the golden age of the Hong Kong kung-fu film, then gets relegated to such sad junk as the China O’’Brien and Lady Dragon series in America. But for anybody who wants to know what the fuss was about, and those, like me, who want to see Cynthia regain her rightful place in the top echelon of action stars, the two newest Dragon Dynasty DVDs are the ones for you.

Dragon Dynasty is the new home for the many martial art movies the Weinstein Company has been hoarding for years. They’’re finally releasing these amazing, literally unmatchable, adventures with enough worthy whistles and beguiling bells to make them worthwhile for even a pioneering kung-fu flick fan such as myself. Still, some of their decisions and missteps are indicative of the seeming disdain they previously displayed for these bogarted milestones.

Take, for example, Above the Law, Rothrock’s’ second HK film (following the classic Yes Madam, which also introduced Michelle Yeoh to an awed Chinese audience) and Dragon Dynasty’’s ninth DVD release. What, say you, I don’’t remember Cynthia Rothrock in that fine, first, 1988, Steven Seagal movie!?  That’s because Cynthia was in the 1986 like-named Hong Kong film, which was more generally known as Righting Wrongs, which would have made a much less confusing, more easily ordered, title for this new DVD.

Under any name, this combination of Death Wish and Enter the Dragon adds to its list of firsts, in that it’s the first major action starring vehicle for the impressive Yuen Baio away from his “big brothers,” directors, and co-stars Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung (late of CBS-TV’s Martial Law series). But rather than showcase Baio’’s sweet, lovable, easy-going nature, director Corey Yuen Kwai (who went on to choreograph the action in Jet Li’s’ Kiss of the Dragon, among others) decided to make Righting Wrong a monument to paranoia, fear, brutality and some of the most savage kung-fu ever put on celluloid.

The return of Hong Kong to China’’s rule was more than a decade away at the time, but action directors such as Corey were already reflecting their concerns with films that featured corruption as a murderous way of life. Baio plays a lawyer who moonlights as a vigilante after his beloved mentor is mown down. Rothrock is the Interpol agent sent to arrest him, while everyone around them is unleashing assassins to kill everyone they can get their hands, knives, guns, construction tools, planes, garrotes, and bombs on.

The fights Corey crams this movie with are boldly conceived, incredibly played, and well worth watching, even studying, repeatedly, which is a good thing since clips of them are shown repeatedly during the interesting “Special Feature” interviews with Rothrock, Baio, and Canadian kickboxing champ Peter “Sugarfoot” Cunningham (who co-stars as one of the many killers). The packaging copy isn’t through with you at just the confusing title, however. The good news is that the disc also features alternate scenes (although not one Rothrock mentions in her interview) and endings, which aren’’t listed on the box. The bad news is that, while the copy maintains that the film is letterboxed widescreen, it ain’’t.

Which is a shame, because Dragon Dynasty’‘s tenth release, and the next piece of Rothrock proof, is Shanghai Express, which is beautifully restored and letterboxed, capturing every millimeter of the astonishing stunts and scintillating fights director/star Sammo Hung piles on his international cast-of-hundreds. Like Righting Wrongs/Above the Law before it, this DVD features a pandering alternate title for a film that is better known (even on the opening credits) as The Millionaires’’ Express.

Three Stooges cartoons recovered

Three Stooges cartoons recovered

The Three Stooges (in this case, Larry, Moe and Joe De Rita) were very old in 1965 when they made a series of animated cartoons for Cambria Studios.  Yesterday, Muller Media, Inc. announced that it had recovered the masters for all 156 cartoons.

The cartoons were made with 41 live actions sequences, with four cartoons for each.  Every carton opened with a live action sequence.

There is no word on whether the company plans to syndicate the cartoons to television or release them on DVD.  Muller Media president said, "We have ordered the U.S. Copyright Office to research their archives to determine if we still own the copyrights or if we merely own the original masters in the public domain. Either way; the series has value to the company."

Spider-Man 3 bootlegs already abound…

Spider-Man 3 bootlegs already abound…

If you want to see Spider-Man 3 and you don’t want to wait until May 4th, the inevitable bootleg DVDs are already out and about – in China. And you can get yours for the low, low cost of $1.00 a piece … plus airfare.

According to Reuters, there is even a warning on the back, printed in Chinese, against pirating the product. But, as always, buyer beware: any specific bootleg DVD might not work on your specific player.

China is almost as well known for its bootlegs as it is for its booming economy, Sadly, these sales will not be incorporated into Spidey‘s box office totals.

U.N.C.L.E. boxed at last

U.N.C.L.E. boxed at last

Last year, DVD provider Anchor Bay announced it was releasing the classic action series The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Star Robert Vaughn recorded four hours of supplimentary materlal. And then, they got a nasty letter from Warner Bros. saying "no way, José."

The two companies reached for their lawyers and had a showdown. And now, Warner Bros. won. It seems that in addition to having the teevee rerun syndication rights (their Turner division got it when they bought bits and pieces of MGM), they got the home video rights as well. All that material Vaughn recorded? Gone with the wind.

But in a few weeks Vaughn will be teaming up with his old partner David McCallum to record brand-new DVD extras. Oddly enough, American Vaughn has been working in Britain filming his AMC/BBC series Hustle, while British-born McCallum has been in the States filming NCIS.

The first box set is expected to be out by Christmas… unless one of the lawyers gets a clever idea.

There’s no need to fear

There’s no need to fear

Forget that god awful looking CGI pup we’ve seen in the movie trailers.  The one, true Underdog will be collected on a three volume DVD box set this summer.  Released by Genius Products, under license from Classic Media, the $29.98 collection will feature digitally re-mastered episodes with Wally Cox (the voice of Underdog) sounding better than ever.  Not only that, the DVDs will collect the 1960s television series as originally broadcast so fans can delight in the additional escapades of Hunter, Go Go Gophers, Klondike Kat, Tennessee Tuxedo, King and Odie, Tootie Turtle and Commander McBragg.  The release date has been listed as both July 24 and August 6 while the god awful-looking CGI movie opens on August 4.

Trivia point: did you know that the meek, sheepish Wally Cox once was Marlon Brando’s roommate? Underdog, indeed!

Song of the South to rise again?

Song of the South to rise again?

Disney’s first live-action motion picture (well, mostly), Song of the South, just might see the light of day once again. Locked up tight in their well-promoted archives since 1986 and never released on video tape, LaserDisc or DVD in the United States, the subject once again was raised at their annual shareholders meeting, this time in acknowledgement of a petition drive demanding the movie’s release. The petition has attained 115,000 signatures thus far.

It should be pointed out that Disney’s fear they might be seen as actively racist has not deterred them from releasing the movie overseas, and these prints have served as the basis of the great many bootleg editions that are commonly found in this country.

“The question of Song of the South comes up periodically,” Disney CEO Robert Iger told the Associated Press. “We’ve decided to take a look at it again because we’ve had numerous requests about bringing it out. Our concern was that a film that was made so many decades ago being brought out today perhaps could be either misinterpreted or that it would be somewhat challenging in terms of providing the appropriate context.”

The movie is historically important, and, of course, there’s that annoying First Amendment thing. It stars James Baskett as Uncle Remus and Hattie McDaniel as Aunt Tempy. Ironically, there weren’t a lot of starring roles given to blacks in 1946. Baskett was quite the star in the black movie circuit.

The song Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah won an Oscar as best picture, and the Splash Mountain rides at the Disney theme parks were inspired by the movie.

It is believed a DVD release will make a great deal of money for the House of Mouse.

Galactica plots its new course

Galactica plots its new course

Now that the third season is behind him and he’s got a full commitment from the SciFi Network for a third, Battlestar Galactica developer and executive producer Ron Moore decided to spill a few beans about what’s ahead for the series.

Moore revealed Katee Sackhoff will be back as Starbuck throughout the upcoming season, although he did not reveal if she was the final Cylon. Despite her previous public comments regarding her getting new work on other series, Moore told the trade magazine TVWeek "She was very careful how she phrased it. We wanted people to feel the loss. We didn’t want to put Katee in the position of lying to people. She did look for other work and is getting other work — just other work that won’t interfere with her "Battlestar" commitments."

He also disclosed the upcoming two-hour Galactica made-for-teevee movie that will be airing this fall (and available on DVD shortly thereafter) will not pick up from the point where season three left off, providing a convenient "jumping in" point for new viewers. "It didn’t feel right to try and resolve the cliffhanger with a single airing and DVD release. It didn’t make any sense. We told a story that takes place in the past in the "Galactica" universe but relates to events in the fourth season."

As has been widely rumored, Moore confirmed the possibility of a prequel series called Caprica. It’s "still in development," Moore said. "They’re not picking it up as a pilot right now. They’ve talked about doing a two-hour version of it, or a DVD. The longer it goes on, the less likely it seems that anything will happen."

Of course, if this fall’s stand-alone movie does well – or if the Star Trek theatrical prequel does extremely well (a longer shot, IMHO) – don’t be surprised if SciFi gets a lot more interested.
