Frank Spotnitz Optimistic About ‘X-FIles 3’

Frank Spotnitz Optimistic About ‘X-FIles 3’

Frank Spotnitz spoke with Movieweb about the current state of The X-Files franchise in the weeks prior to X-Files: I Want to Believe coming out on DVD on December 2.

“The studio has not said yes or no,” the producer said of a third feature. “I think the box office; unfortunately, we got creamed in the theaters by The Dark Knight. I don’t think anybody could’ve anticipated that was going to be such a huge, historic phenomenon. To be a dark scary movie coming out the week after The Dark Knight was not the best timing. I think there’s life in the franchise still. I think these are great characters. There’s a date that looms very important in X-Files mythology, which is December 2012. I think after the DVD comes out, the studio will decide whether they want to roll the dice on another X-Files feature.”

On the subject of that date, he admitted, “I think we would definitely have to deal with alien colonization. I honestly think that’s the movie that most non-hardcore X-Files fans, as well as a lot of hardcore X-Files fans are dying to see. Obviously, I think Chris has had ideas about that from the very beginning when he dreamt up this show, 16 years ago.”

‘Pinocchio’ added to Guillermo del Toro’s Crowded Plate

‘Pinocchio’ added to Guillermo del Toro’s Crowded Plate

Director Guillermo del Toro told Bloody Disgusting that he is producing Gris Grimly’s directorial debut, a new version of Pinocchio.

"We are trying to get a full stop-motion version of Gris Grimly’s Pinocchio off the ground, with the Jim Henson Company," del Toro told the site while promoting the DVD release of Hellboy II: The Golden Army. "The idea came from Gris, and everybody loves his book about it. The original story is far more perverse and spooky and semi-necrophilia vibe to it in certain aspects. Gris certainly has that vein in him, he wants to do this with that original spookiness in it, we are trying to get it going. The Jim Henson Company is the behind it and we are currently working on the screenplay! It’s not coming to a screen near you any time soon, even if it were to begin today it would be about three years in the making, but we are working to make it happen. A full-scale puppet universe takes time," he jokes.

Del Toro has been fascinated with puppets it seems given the extensive work on the prologue setting up the story for Hellboy II.  He also says he’s developing an original puppet project with Hellboy creator Mike Mignola.

‘Real Adventures of Jonny Quest’ Headed to DVD

‘Real Adventures of Jonny Quest’ Headed to DVD

Late in the week, Warner Home Video announced that The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest will finally come to DVD on February 17, 2009.

To date, just "Escape to Questworld" has been released as part of their TV Premiere sampler line and that was back in 2004.

The two-disc The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest – Season 1, Volume 1 will contain the first 13 episodes and retail for $26.99. The set will offer a bonus interview with show producers and retrospective on the impact of the original animated series.

The revival ran a total of 52 episodes airing from August 26, 1996 through April 16, 1997. It had a long, troubled gestation period which saw talent come and go during the production of the episodes leading to varying quality.  Jonny and Hadji were joined by Race Bannon’s heretofore unseen daughter Jessie. It failed to live up to the quality of the original adventure series form the 1960s.

Plastic Man’s Animated Adventures Coming to DVD

Plastic Man’s Animated Adventures Coming to DVD

Warner Home Video is apparently readying the Plastic Man Comedy Adventure Hour for a DVD release. On Friday, Mark Evanier mentioned on his News from Me blog, “This afternoon, I had to go out to the Warner Brothers lot to be interviewed for little behind-the-scenes videos that will appear on two upcoming DVDs of cartoon shows. One is of the 1979 Saturday morning Plastic Man series, which I worked on for one season. The other is of the 1985 syndicated Jetsons revival, which I worked on for about an hour.”

TV Shows on DVD notes that when they surveyed people in 2007, the series topped their charts. When a Warner exec was asked during a chat earlier this year, hey replied, "We are looking at all of these, and hope to have news for you in 2009."

The Plastic Man Comedy/Adventure Show
ran from 1979 to 1981 on ABC. Produced by Ruby-Spears, it aired right after Super Friends and was either 90 minutes or two hours and was comprised of segments featuring Plastic Man (voiced by Michael Bell), Baby Plas, Plastic Family, Mighty Man & Yukk, Fangface and Fangpuss and Rickety Rocket.

On this series, Plastic Man had Penny as a girl friend who became his wife, voiced by Melendy Britt and their child, Baby Plas, had his own escapades. Woozy Winks was unfortunately replaced by Hula Hula, a Hawaiian sidekick.
