This week’s marks eleven years since the passing of my late wife, Kimberly Yale. The best way to remember people, I’ve found, is through stories – stories you know or stories you’ve heard. Story is what I do. So here are some of the stories by which I remember Kim.
 
Kim and I had known each other quite a while before we started dating or became a couple. In point of fact, before Kim and I started dating, I had given up on the ritual. It simply had gotten too painful. I was well into my thirties at that point and none of my relationships had lasted more than six months. The common variable in that equation seemed to be me so I just assumed I was never going to find someone. I had not gone on a date for maybe eighteen months prior to Kim’s and my starting up.
 
In fact, Kim had earlier been one of those who had shot down whatever overture I was making. I had gotten back from a business trip to England and picked up a Doctor Who tchotke or two that I thought she would like. I called her up, said I was coming over to her apartment, and headed over in vague hopes of maybe possibly something might happen. Kim and I were more acquaintances than anything else at this point.

Well, Toy Fair is officially over, folks. All that’s left is to sweep up the wayward Legos, find a place for all of the free promotional swag, and calmly reflect on the passing of yet another convention.

Oh, and there’s always the "Clip Reel" — or, as we call it in the InterWebs News, the "Round-Up" article. So, just in case you missed any of our Toy Fair 2008 coverage, here are some of the announcements, audio, video and photos from Toy Fair ’08 we collected thus far.

We still have some audio and video wrap-up coverage, including today’s edition of ComicMix Radio, so keep an eye on the site over the rest of the week. As a special "bonus feature" of sorts, I’ve included a few photos after the round-up below of some sights, scenes, and, of course, toys that  were favorites of the ComicMix crew but didn’t quite fit into the rest of our coverage.

First Look: ‘Doctor Who’ Minimates and Mattel’s ‘Infinite Heroes’ DC Lineup!

There were a number of big announcements this past week at Toy Fair, but two that really caught our attention should make fans of Doctor Who and the DC Universe very happy.

First up is the announcement that a line of Doctor Who Minimates have finally been approved for production by Underground Toys! Minimates fans will soon be able to add figures to their collection based on David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor, Martha Jones and, by the looks of the figure designs, an army of Cybermen, too.

We have a trio of larger images of the Doctor Who designs posted after the jump, but be sure to check out today’s edition of ComicMix Radio (Live at 2:00 PM EST) for an interview with Underground Toys about the details of the line — specifically, when you can expect to see the Doctor Who Minimates on shelves, which characters you can expect to find and how they’re getting distributed.

The second half of today’s ComicMix Radio podcast features an interview with Mattel about their recently announced "Infinite Heroes" line of 3.75-inch figures based on the DC Universe. This is the one that has comics fans and toy collectors talking all over the ‘Net, and we’ll have pictures of the roster of "Infinite Heroes" figures on display in Mattel’s showroom — as well as more more details about the line — available here on ComicMix at 2 PM EST today.

ComicMix at Toy Fair: Eisner’s ‘Spirit’ Meets Conan at Dark Horse

There was quite a bit to see at the Dark Horse Comics booth during this year’s Toy Fair, from statues based on Doctor Who and The Dark Crystal to busts based on Robert E. Howard’s Conan universe and various other products inspired by comics.

Most notable of the bunch, however, were a pair of statues based on the title character of Will Eisner’s The Spirit comics. With a Frank Miller-helmed film based on the character scheduled to hit theaters early next year, Dark Horse Comics’ statues are based on the original Eisner design for the character — literally.

According to DH’s Vice President of Product Development, the statues are based on sketches Eisner made in the event that a 3-D sculpture was ever made of the character. Dark Horse acquired the sketches from the Eisner Estate after the creator’s passing, and had the statues made from teh sketched designs.

"The statues aren’t just in the Eisner style," explained Scroggy, "but actually designed by Eisner."

Dark Horse also had a few busts from its upcoming "Savage Sword Collection" of products based on the work of Conan creator Robert E. Howard. The design of the busts will be based on recent covers of each character’s current Dark Horse Comics series.

Wow. There are more spoilers, rumors and plot predictions than you can shake a stick at in this post over at io9.

However, if Doctor Who fans can resist the urge to scroll down through the full post (where the spoilers for Lost, Sarah Connor Chronicles and other series are collected), there’s also a great video preview of the sci-fi series’ much anticipated fourth season.

The video has been appearing in British movie theaters, and features (among other things) the return of Rose Tyler and Martha Jones, the creepy Ood from "The Impossible Planet" episode in Season Two, and a massive wasp. Good times are in store for the Doctor, it seems.

Fan Comics Celebrate ‘Doctor Who’, ‘Torchwood’

Pia Guerra may have her work cut out for her.  While Guerra’s first issue of IDW’s Doctor Who comic book series is scheduled to come out in July, fan-drawn strips about the British sci-fi phenomenon and its spinoffs are already well underway.

Pseudonymous LiveJournal bloggers calling themselves spastasmagoria and jigglykat have created Torchwood Babiez, which is so unbearably adorable it could give Cute Overload a run for its money.  So far the ladies are up to Page 10, and they’re just getting rolling.

Meanwhile, Rich Morris is currently up to Page 81 of his wonderful strip The Ten Doctors, which can be enjoyed by casual viewers of the show but is really designed for the more fanatic trivia buff who remembers over a quarter century of Doctors, companions, villains and planets.  Only three of the story pages have been inked and colored so far, but Rich’s art is worthwhile even in pencil form.

Doubtless there are a ton of other fan-based comics making the rounds; we’d be especially interested to see any paying tribute to the kid-friendly "Sarah Jane Chronicles."

Former Doctor Who Christopher Eccleston Joins ‘G.I. Joe’

Chris Eccleston, who played Doctor Who in the first season of the recently relaunched series, will play a villain, Destro, in the upcoming "G.I. Joe" film.

The role was originally slated for Irish-born actor David Murray, but "visa issues" forced his withdrawal.

"G.I. Joe" is scheduled for an Aug. 7, 2009, release and currently stars  Dennis Quaid, Channing Tatum, Sienna Miller, Ray Park, Rachel Nichols, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Marlon Wayans, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Arnold Vosloo.

We told you about this event before and now Kevin Kelly at i09 let’s us in on the highlights of Friday night’s "Y: The Last Party" in L.A., celebrating the conclusion of Y: The Last Man, Brian K. Vaughan’s hugely popular tale of the last man on Earth.

The party, which took place at Meltdown Comics on Sunset Blvd., featured guests such as Vaughan himself, comic co-creator and artist Pia Guerra, Grant Morrison, Drew Goddard, Mark Waid and Joss Whedon.

Among the highlights of the event, whose proceeds went to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, were many revelations regarding the creation and inspiration of the comic as well as some tidbits about who might play the comic’s title character, Yorick Brown, in the oft-discussed, big-screen version and what co-creator Guerra’s next project will be.

According to the report:

[Vaughan] originally came up with the concept for Y as a project called Boyson, "The Last Boy On Earth" for Penthouse Comics full of "women built like robot fuck machines" and one boy remaining on the planet. After they folded, he replaced the robots with a Gloria Steinem quote and sent it over to Vertigo.

‘Doctor Who’ Season 4, Digital Audio Downloads Announced

A variety of "Doctor Who" news hit the ‘Net recently, so here’s a quick wrap-up of some stories "Who" fans might want to keep on their radar:

  • SCI FI Channel has confirmed that Season 4 of "Doctor Who" will begin this April on the network, with Catherine Tate replacing Freema Agyeman as the Doctor’s companion. Tate appeared in an earlier episode of the series titled "The Runaway Bride." Agyeman will appear in the series again midway through the season.
  • SCI Fi Channel also confirmed that the youth-targeted "Who" spin-off series "The Sarah Jane Chronicles" will also begin airing in April.
  • And if you’re the sort who wants to reconnect with some of your favorite Doctors of the past, Big Finish has annoucned that they’ll begin supplying the "Doctor Who" audio plays they’ve been producing since 1999 on CD in a download-friendly MP3 format.

The plays feature popular "Doctor Who" writers such as Paul Cornell and Mark Gatiss, as well as writers familiar to the comics crowd, including Dan Abnett (Nova) and Simon Furman (Transformers). Former "Doctor Who" actors lending their talents to the plays include Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann.
