Monday Mix-Up: The Dark Knight Meets The Green Hornet!

Monday Mix-Up: The Dark Knight Meets The Green Hornet!

It was just another day in Gotham. Another challenge for the Green Hornet, his aid Kato, and their rolling arsenal, the Black Beauty! On police record, a wanted criminal; The Green Hornet is really Britt Reid, owner/publisher of the Daily Sentinel. His duel identity, known only to his secretary and the District Attorney. And now… to protect the rights and lives of decent citizens rides opens a window, the Green Hornet! Atomic batteries to power… turbines to speed… grappling hook… somewhere on the roof of yet another building.

Enjoy this little crossover classic from the brilliant 60’s Batman television show. And for the record… look at the amazing arm strength by Robin as he hold himself up with only 1 boy-muscled-arm.

SpinTunes Presents Super Song Fight 2010!

SpinTunes Presents Super Song Fight 2010!

Frequent commenter and musician extraordinaire, Russ Rogers, gave us a lil’ hat tip towards a funky-cool contest you crazy ComicMixers will dig. The contest? Why it’s SpinTown’s SpinTunes Superhero Song Fight contest for 2010! Asking those out there in the interwebs to submit songs inspired by and written about Superheros and Supervillains… SpinTunes now has created a cool little player where you the adoring public can link up to, crank the volume on your favorite cans, and rock out to some gamma irradiated rock and roll.

The contestants are a swath of indie folk/rock/alt-funky goodness. Contributors like Denise Hudson and Joanne Abbot lend flighty ballads (‘Invisible Woman’ and ‘Why’) to the contest. Russ’s group, Godz Poodlz, released a Genesis twinged ode to DC’s resident Hazmat habit wearing hero, the Human Bomb. Over the pond plunker Danny Blackwell drops a ditty titled “Love Song From Robin to Batman” which is pretty self explanatory. And there’s a ton of others all waiting to tickle the hairs in your inner ears with musical hero goodness.

SpinTunes stems from the blog of SpinTown, as run by a Travis Langworthy, a teacher with a good ear for tunage, and a heart of gold. The SpinTune contest is voted on by a panel of judges, so no need to cram the ballot box, but feel free to head here, and listen to the tunes, and let them know what makes your boogie woogie, woogie woo.

An Unshaven Interview

An Unshaven Interview

Way back when, at the C2E2 convention, Unshaven Comics cut itself out a little mecca within Artist’s Alley in hopes of making new fans. Across the aisle from such Alley giants like Katie Cook, and siting besides amazing guys like Leo Kohse of Bloodfire Studios… our little table did what it could to be noticed. We wore company tee-shirts. We hung an 8 foot banner with 3 ft tall smiley faces adorned to it’s white vinyl. We yelled at Dan DiDio and Tom Brevoort to buy our book (for the record, Dan did, and enjoyed the free stickers. Tom didn’t even let Kyle finish the pitch). We called in fans from far and wide across the aisle with our tracktor beam-like powers. And then we got the idea to meet awesome media-types in hopes one of them would want to know our Unshaven Backstory.

After shaking down countless not-as-cool people… we ran into the Chicago Red Eye reporter Elliot Serrano. One interview, 17 reminders, and a few under-the-table dealings later (hey… it IS Chicago, mind you) we got ourselves a little publicity! And thanks to a few bribes with the good folks here at ComicMix… here’s a tasty link for you to enjoy our interview. Now click it, and enjoy!

Peter Keefe, 1953-2010

Peter Keefe, 1953-2010

Peter Keefe, creator of the 80’s hit sensation Voltron, passed away May 27th, 2010. His brother Chris Keefe had said his brother passed away due to complications from throat cancer. In additional to his brothers Chris and Tony, Mr. Keefe is survived
by his wife, Pamela Mills Keefe, a stepson, James Mills; his mother, Anne Keefe, and three sisters, Lisa Keefe Updaw, Mollie Keefe
Jones, and Kitty Keefe of Cleveland.

Keefe created Voltron by way of licensing Japanese cartoons “Beast King Go-Lion” and “Armored Fleet Dairugger
XV,” which he discovered in 1983 at a merchandise licensing convention
in Japan. Give credit where it’s due kiddos. Keefe’s splicing of show content, and creating “western friendly” plot helped Americanize Voltron as the predecessor to the eventual “Power Rangers” empire in the 1990s. Keefe was said to “live and breathe Voltron”, taking over the reigns for several other iterations of the lion-led animated super-team after the well of Japanese stock footage ran dry.

After “Voltron,” Mr. Keefe continued to create television shows, including Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs, Denver the Last Dinosaur, Widget the World Watcher, and The Mr. Bogus Show. He was working on “Z-Force”, another cartoon at the time of his passing. Sadly, he wasn’t part of the production team for the forthcoming “Voltron Force” set to debut on Nicktoons later in the fall.

I’ll add on a personal note that Voltron was easily the first cartoon that resonated with me as a child growing up in the 80’s. While the plot was thin and repetitive (we get it, just form the giant robot already, and save the day already!) the show holds a soft spot in my heart. And at only 57 years old, it would seem Mr. Keefe should have had more time to help bring his vision to the airwaves. Another loss to the community of creators. Fellow Voltron lovers, place your lions at half attack mode in honor of the man who gave us the Defender of the Universe.

Monday Mix-Up: Toy Story / Fight Club

Monday Mix-Up: Toy Story / Fight Club

With Toy Story 3 on it’s way to theaters soon, we thought we’d treat you to a lil’ mashup that puts a new light on our favorite characters. In an alternate universe where Woody just isn’t happy with himself, or the life that he leads, one man can make it all change. Tyler Lightyear, space soap salesmen, helps our hero find his inner strength. How? By hitting the bottom of the toy chest of course. You
buy a toy. You tell yourself, this is the last toy I will ever
need in my life. Buy the toy, then for a couple days you’re
satisfied that no matter what goes wrong, at least you’ve got your toy
issue handled. Then the right set of warrior accessories. Then the perfect videogame. The mint-in-box collectors ring. The Battle Ravaged Chase Variant. Then you’re trapped in your lovely nest, and the things you used to own, now they own you. It’s only after you lose everything that you’re free to do anything.

Now feel free to enjoy the clip!

Spider-Man Webs Up A Gallery

Spider-Man Webs Up A Gallery

Tip of the hat to friend of ComicMix, Missy Andersen, for linking us up to this lil’ piece of joy. Seems the hard working Viennese/Croatian design collective For Use/Numen created an astounding installation perhaps inspired by the famous wall crawler. Or it has something to do dancing, and choreography, and packing tape. Either way, visit the Fast Company blog and checkout the awesomeness up close(r).

Thwip!

Apple kills Flash

Apple kills Flash

In case you missed it, and danged if it didn’t happen fast… Shirt.Woot! debuted a dilly of a pickle today on it’s newest shirt, featuring our favorite scarlet speedster taking a little nap on the concrete. The culprit? Well, a poisoned Apple. It seems Apple killed Flash. Get it? Or do we need to spell this one out?

Savvy tech-nerds get it. You see, those fancy iPhones, and iPads don’t support the web-based technology Flash, created by Adobe. The two companies used to be like Wally and Hal. Or Hal and Ollie. Or Ollie and Black Canary. But now? They’re like Superman and Lex Luthor, or Batman and the Joker. It ain’t pretty. Sure, both companies have attempted to explain their malaise for one another in wonderfully worded “open letters”, but we comic fans know hatred when we see it. And this situation is like Professor X and Magneto: best buddies turned enemies based on their personal mantras.

While we would have love to slap one of these cotton beauties across our geeky torsos… alas, Shirt.Woot! has already sold out. Faster than Barry slapped Wally back to the co-feature eh’?

Comic art auction to help animal shelters in Nashville

Comic art auction to help animal shelters in Nashville

With all the devastation that’s occurred recently across the United States, it’s time we comic book fans do a little bit to help. ComicMix contributor (and recent birthday boy) Mark Wheatley has donated a pair of awesome sketches to an Ebay auction collection. The proceeds from these auctions will go to help the Nashville Animal Rescues & Shelters devastated by the recent flood, which caused over 1.9 billion dollars in damages to the area. Both sketches, one of Batman, the other, Conan, are 11″ x 14″ and are original black marker sketches by the artist. Do yourself a favor and click the links above to visit the auctions, or see what else is available and drive the bids up. It’s going to help a great cause, and could win you some great original art.
