Sarah Paulson, Bobby Cannavale, Nathan Fillion Back To TV

Sarah Paulson, Bobby Cannavale, Nathan Fillion Back To TV

Before the new television season kicks off next week, ABC is already reloading their larder with five new series.  Among them is Cupid, a revival of the one-hit wonder series from a decade ago.  Created by Veronica Mars’ Rob Thomas, it debuted on September 26, 1998 and starred Jeremy Piven as a man who might or might not be the reincarnation of the mythological Cupid.  Consigned to Earth by Zeus as punishment, he must help 100 couples romantically connect without once using his god-like powers. After a mere 15 episodes, the network axed the show. As Thomas was developing new ideas for the network, everyone kept circling back to the Cupid concept and a fresh approach was approved.

Snakes on a Plane’s Bobby Cannavale and The Spirit’s Sarah Paulson with the actress playing the psychiatrist who is treating his “delusion”.

Nathan Fillion will transition from Wisteria Lane to the Big Apple when he stars in Castle. He’s a crime novelist who winds up assisting the NYPD solve murder cases.

Alyssa Milano returns to the network, starring in Single with Parents, a sitcom about a woman struggling to handle her job, her life and parents, played by Annie Potts and Beau Bridges.

Harold Perrineau Jr. remains free from Lost’s island by starring as part of the ensemble cop series The Unusuals along with Amber Tamblyn, Jeremy Renner, Adam Goldberg, Kai Lennoz and Terry Kinney.

SDCC Interview: Jamie Chung Talks ‘Samurai Girl’

SDCC Interview: Jamie Chung Talks ‘Samurai Girl’

In a few short years actress Jamie Chung has began to establish herself as one of the most sought-after young actresses working in Hollywood. From her first apperance as a cast member of MTV’s Real World San Diego through appearances on Days of Our Lives, Veronica Mars and CSI: New York, Jamie’s career continues to advance into bigger and more challenging roles.

More recently, Jamie is co-starring as Chi Chi in the Dragonball feature film based on the hugely popular media franchise and will be starring in ABC Family’s mini-series Samurai Girl, which debuts in September, as the title character Heaven. We caught up with Jamie recently at the San Diego Comic-Con to talk with her a bit about Samurai Girl, her character and how she feels naked without a sword.

COMICMIX: Hi Jamie, thanks for talking to us.

JAMIE CHUNG: Sure, my pleasure.

CMix: So, tell us a bit about your character in Samuari Girl.

JC: Sure. She’s a 19 year old girl named Heaven who’s adopted by one of the wealthiest families in Japan. During some tragic events she ends up finding out her family is influenced by the Yakuza, the Japanese mafia.

In an effort to find out how involved her family is with the mafia, she also discovers that she’s a part of some ancient prophecy which leads her to question who she really is and makes her go a journey of self-discovery to find out the truth about herself and where she comes from.

Superhero Casting Announced

Superhero Casting Announced

While Mike Gold shared the news about the honest-to-goodness JLA movie, another project was also announced yesterday.

Dimension Films will be producing the inevitable spoof entitled, what else, Superhero. The casting has been completed with filming about to begin and a March 28, 2008 release date set.

The film features perennial spoof master Leslie Neilsen, in addition to Brent Spiner (Star Trek: The Next Generation), Marion Ross (Happy Days), the amazing Jeffrey Tambor (Arrested Development), Drake Bell (High Fidelity), Sara Paxton (Sydney White), Christopher McDonald (Fanboys), Kevin Hart (Scary Movie 4), and Ryan Hansen (Veronica Mars).  The satire will be written and directed by Craig Mazin (Scary Movie 3 and 4).

Of course, Mystery Men was a wonderful superhero spoof ahead of its time, so we’ll reserve judgment until next spring.

More Heroes for Second Season

More Heroes for Second Season

The casting announcements for the second season of Heroes have been flowing of late, with the  cast set to start shooting next week.

The biggest name to join is David Anders, best known as the chaerming villain, Sark, on Alias.  He will play, surprisingly, Takezo Kensei, Hiro Nakamura’s childhood idol.  As viewers recall, Hiro now possesses Kensei’s sword.

Nick D’Agosto has been cast as Clarie’s boyfriend and will also have undisclosed super-powers.  D’Agosto has been largely seen in television guest roles from House to ER.  She is expected to return to her cheerleading habit when she winds up in California.  She will be dealing with Lyndsy Fonseca (Big Love) and Dianna Agron (Veronica Mars) as fellow cheerleaders, one bitchy, one sweet.

Eriko Tamura, a pop star and actress in Japan, will be playing a Japanese princess.  She has ten albums and has become quite the idol.

Barry Shabaka Henley (The Horseman) will be a New York police detective named Fuller with Holt McCallany (Vantage Point) as leader of an Irish street gang.

Veronica Mars Goes Wild

Veronica Mars Goes Wild

Over at www.eonline.com/gossip/kristin someone on DC’s staff spilled the beans about the fate of the beloved Veronica Mars.

During a chat this week : "Jonathan in New York: I work at DC Comics, and you’ve got some big love here. There’s a bunch of us who take your word for gospel, and though it’s already sorta out there, we just wanted to send some info your way on the Veronica Mars comic books. They’ll be published by our WildStorm imprint, which is based in San Diego, and R.T. [series creartor rob Thomas] is looking to be firmly on board. We’re even hoping for a late fall release of the first issue. Hopefully, more to come…Keep up the good work!Jonathan, we love you. Tubers, buy DC Comics."

No doubt there will be more about this at San Diego next month.

DC Goes To Mars?

DC Goes To Mars?

Okay, the Mars Bars trick isn’t working, so you can stop sending ’em. The CW is not going to renew Veronica Mars.

However, series creator Rob Thomas told The Toronto Star he was in discussions this week with DC Comics; "they want to do (Season 4) as a comic series."

The comic book medium is becoming the popular new way to zombify dead teevee series. Buffy The Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon has been writing a Season 8 for Dark Horse, and it’s been selling through the roof. Me, I’m holding out for Season 2 of Jack Of All Trades.

Thanks and a tip o’the hat to Larry Shell.

Sending candy bars to CW to save Veronica Mars

Sending candy bars to CW to save Veronica Mars

Since it worked so well for Jericho, there’s another grassroots campaign in the works – this time, people are sending Mars bars to CW president Dawn Ostroff in an attempt to save Veronica Mars.

The Indian Food Store is collecting many many many Mars bars from around the world and sending them to Ms. Ostroff with a note that reads: "Veronica Mars: More Addictive Than Chocolate! Satisfy our craving for Season 4!" They got over 600 orders in the first three hours, and will probably get many more as the word gets out.

Mmmmm… Kristen Bell and chocolate…. <insert Homer Simpson gurgle here>

Yes, and we’re not above running the picture of Kristen Bell in the Leia outfit to get your attention. If need be, we also have the cheerleader and leather outfits. But only if you save the show.

Hat tip: Lisa Sullivan. For the story only. The photos are mine. Mine, do you hear?!?

CW upfronts: Smallville, Supernatural back

CW upfronts: Smallville, Supernatural back

Via Variety: The CW has officially greenlit three dramas and two unscripted magazine shows — but there’s still no final word on the fate of Veronica Mars.

Definitely gone: All of Us, the Will Smith-produced laffer that ran for three seasons on UPN and the CW. Returning shows snagging official pickups: Laffers Girlfriends and The Game and dramas Smallville, Supernatural and One Tree Hill. CW picked up Everybody Hates Chris for a third season earlier this spring.

As expected, CW execs Tuesday called the producers of Gossip Girl, Reaper and a remake of Blighty family drama Wild at Heart to give them the good news. Things are still looking promising for comedy Aliens in America, though as of early Tuesday afternoon , there was no official order yet.

My suspicion: CW is looking to use the FBI option as a way to reduce/restart headcount on Veronica Mars, and if they want to keep it around as a mid-season replacement, then they’d only have to pay the option for Kristen Bell. Everybody else — "hey, sorry, we don’t need you four years in the future, but if you’re available, that would be great…" Saves money and allows them to have a show in reserve for when they have an hour-sized hole in the schedule later in the year. And you know there will be one, sooner or later.

It had been announced previously that this coming season would be the last for Smallville, and Michael Rosenbaum had confirmed it would be his last. Just in time for the next theatrical appearance of the Man of Steel, probably in the Justice League of America movie.
