Born in 1957, Gary Carlson first appeared on the comic book scene with his self-published superhero anthology Megaton back in the early 1980s.

He created the character of Vanguard with Erik Larsen, whose Savage Dragon also began in the anthology. Carlson later wrote Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Berzerker, and Supreme.

He and Larsen also co-wrote Aquaman for DC and Nova for Marvel. Carlson created Big Bang Comics, initially for Calber Press—he later moved Big Bang to Image and now self-publishes it, functioning as writer, editor, and publisher.

‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ Trailer Now Online

I don’t know what’s more weird: Seeing the Warner Bros. "WB" shield instead of the 20th Century Fox spotlight logo on a Star Wars film or seeing a Star Wars movie done in the style of the TMNT movie from last year. But the fact remains, the Star Wars: The Clone Wars is real and it’s coming this summer, August 15, 2008!

We all knew that the Star Wars animated movie would take take place between Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and continues with many of the characters and settings from Cartoon Network’s Star Wars: Clone Wars cartoons. But the trailer dropped some new details on us. Renegades have kidnapped Jabba the Hutt’s son. Obi-Wan had dealings with Jabba. Anakin returned to Tattooine. Anakin seems to have himself a young apprentice. Episode III isn’t the first time Anakin caught up to Count Dooku. And Yoda is really, really cute when done in CGI animation.

According to Variety, director David Fincher, whose credits include some of the most visually innovative and interesting films of the last 20 years (Fight Club, Zodiac and Se7en), has signed on to direct a segment of Paramount’s updated and re-imagined version of the cult-classic Heavy Metal.

The new film is inspired, as was the earlier ’80s version, by the erotic and violent magazine of the same name, which first came to our shores in 1977 and billed itself as "The Adult Illustrated Fantasy Magazine." It will consist of eight or nine individual animated segments, each helmed by a different director.

In addtion to Fincher, some of the other directors taking on segments include Kevin Eastman, of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fame, and effects specialist Tim Miller, whose Blur Studios will handle the new feature’s animation. Fincher, Miller and Eastman will also produce the film which, according to Variety, was conceived from the outset as an adult-oriented, R-Rated project.

As I mentioned previously, in addtion to Heavy Metal, Fincher is a busy man, having just completed The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, again starring Brad Pitt, and developing a film based on the Charles Burns graphic novel Black Hole. He’s also working on several other projects including The Devil in the White City, The Killer and Torso — which is based on the Brian Bendis graphic novel.

Warner Bros. has plenty of comic book properties of their own to adapt, given that they own DC Comics, but apparently they want a few more. The studio has optioned the rights to adapt Jeff Smith’s Bone series of comics into a feature-length film.

Smith will serve as executive producer on the film, while Dan Lin, who has worked on such films as The Departed, TMNT, Alexander and 10,000 BC, will produce.

Whether or not the adaptation is live-action or animated will be determined by meetings between the filmmakers.

Previously, an adaptation of Bone was in development by Nickelodeon Films, but the project fell through due to the direction of the project and Smith’s desire to not exclusively aim the film at children.

There are a lot of people who owe a LOT of their careers to parodying Frank Miller. Exhibit A: Kevin Eastman, Peter Laird, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Now, sadly, it looks like the movies are following suit.

We are not particularly proud to present Meet The Spartans, starring (left to right) Carmen Electra, Diedrich Bader, and Kevin Sorbo. Brought to you by the same people who bring you Scary Movies, I suspect that the only surprise in the film is what you see in this photo: that Diedrich Bader actually has a six pack.

We’re going to just recommend you save the price of a ticket and ninety minutes of your life and go watch United 300 instead:

Paul Dini back to animation already? Too much rough Countdown coverage from the blogs?

Imagi Animation Studios has inked a deal with writer/producer Dini to collaborate on the screen for its upcoming CG animated movie, Gatchaman.  Directed by Kevin Munroe and slated for release in early 2009, the movie is based on the original classic Japanese anime series Gatchaman (1970s), which aired in the US as both G-Force and Battle of the Planets.  Dini has written for and/or produced TV series including Batman: The Animated Series, Duck Dodgers and Lost and a range of comics such as Detective Comics, The World’s Greatest Superheroes and DC Comics weekly series Countdown. Imagi is best known to comics fans for its recent CGI TMNT film.

Now that Tim Story has confirmed that we will see the towering Eater of Worlds, Galactus, in this summer’s Fantastic Four 2: Rise of the Silver Surfer, it is now on good authority that the voice will be lent by Laurence "don’t call me Morpheus" Fishburne. It seems after narrating the very popular TMNT Fishburne is going back to his less serious roots. Let’s hope this can only end with a revival of his Cowboy Curtis character from Pee Wee’s Playhouse.

On more depressing note, Fox held a test screening for Story’s FF2 in Seattle and the crowd was less than impressed. One quote from an audience member is that the film was "sooo bad that they felt dirty and wanted to write letters of complaint." This is pretty discouraging to hear after the excitement that followed the trailer for the film earlier this year. With a response like this and a release date of June 15, it seems that Tim Story and his crew may need to hit the cutting room quickl

Blades of Glory was the number one film for the April Fool’s weekend, with an estimated take of $33 million.  Disney’s Meet The Robinsons came in second, with $25.1 million.

300 came in next, with $11.2 million, followed by TMNT with $9.2 million.  If  Hollywood realizes that both films owe their existance to Frank Miller (whose graphic novel, Ronin, was the inspiration to Eastman and Laird back in the 1980s), no one admits it.

Wild Hogs, Shooter, Premonition, The Last Mimzy, The Hills Have Eyes 2 and Reign Over Me rounded out the list.

Cowabunga, Dudes! Matt Raub here, back once again for my review of my pick for “Best Flick of 2007” – TMNT!

Now, before I do my business, a little history. I’m a 100% freak when it comes to anything and everything 80’s. From the music to the wacky neon fashion to the movies, and most important, the TV shows. From The Real Ghostbusters to M.A.S.K., I knew just about everything that needed to be known about cartoons in the 80’s. With that said, I was going into TMNT with roughly 50% excitement and 50% skepticism that we would get a repeat of the first three Turtles movies, which included (in no particular order): Vanilla Ice, time travel, and freckles.

With that said, I was nothing short of blown away by this flick. I caught myself jumping with excitement during the actions scenes and cackling obnoxiously at Michelangelo’s quips. Now, there aren’t a whole lot of CGI films that take my breath away, the exception being The Incredibles of course, mostly due to the need to dumb down the script to appeal to the legion of drooling nine-year-olds. But that wasn’t the case with TMNT. Instead of being a comedy with some action, this flick was all action with some comedy, and I loved it. While it did have some slapstick comedy to keep the toddlers at bay, there were so many more serious elements that I know had to have gone over the heads of the younger audience.

For those of you who aren’t sure where this film stands in comparison to the previous three, I’ll spell it out. This movie pulls a Superman Returns formula, but does it right. The story takes place about a year after the second film, erasing the Turtles in Time escapade completely from continuity (thanks!). With this continuity, we still get Casey Jones, April O’Neil, and a dead Shredder, but the characters all get a revamp, some for better and some not so much: April O’Neil is no longer a reporter, but a glorified Indiana Jones-archeologist type. What?? But like I said, this took the Superman formula and made it work. And no, April doesn’t end up having a half-turtle baby with Leonardo.
