Year-end window closing wrap up, part 1

Year-end window closing wrap up, part 1

This is my first step towards fulfilling my new-year resolution: to post items of interest in a timely fashion. (There are two assumptions there: that I can post anything in a timely fashion, and that this is interesting, but bear with me.) If I close these windows, my browser will run faster and new posts will go up faster. That’s the theory, if that doesn’t work, I’m getting a new computer and declaring email bankruptcy.

* In the strictest sense, this probably counts as a comic strip. And now the song will be stuck in your head.

* If you’ve recently become unemployed, here’s what you’ve been missing– part Dilbert, part Kafka, part symbolic self-immolation.

* How comics can save us from scientific ignorance.

* Will Elder, remembered by the New York TImes Magazine.

* "I usually dream up a dozen or so profoundly stupid ‘high concepts’ for stories every day." — Brian K. Vaughan, interviewed in Esquire. Explains why J.J. Abrams hired him for Lost, I suppose. (Via io9.)

* Star Wars: A Musical Journey. Run, Luke, run.

* Baby, if you’ve ever wondered… wondered if there ever really was a WKRP in Cincinatti… there is now, but it’s a TV station.

* We hate to burst bubbles, but there’s no way the Lone Ranger melted silver over a campfire to make bullets. (And we mean silver the element, not the horse. That’s just disgusting.) This also means that any medieval werewolf stories are in trouble too…

George Lucas Ponders 5th Indiana Jones Adventure

George Lucas Ponders 5th Indiana Jones Adventure

ComingSoon managed to chat briefly with George Lucas when he came to Los Angeles to present the American Cinematheque’s 23rd annual award to Samuel L. Jackson.

Of the actor, who played Mace Windu in the most recent trilogy, he commented, “To be honest, he’s the only one who asked, actually. He didn’t really lobby for it. He was on a talk show and someone asked him what movie he would’ve liked to be in or that he would like to be in that he hadn’t been in and he said ‘Star Wars.’ So I called him up and said ‘Is that true? Do you really want to be in Star Wars?’ He said ‘Yeah – as long as I’m a Jedi,’ and I said ‘Well, I have a little tiny role, but it grows if you’re willing to do the three movies.’ He said ‘I’m in.’ It was just like that. He didn’t look at it like ‘This is a chance to make a whole bunch of money, a chance to do a big thing.’ He just did what was asked of him and tried to make it as good as he possibly could.”

He confirmed his desire to make a fifth Indiana Jones film and noted, “We’re looking for a MacGuffin, which is an object that he goes after. They’re very hard to come by!” He would not commit to which characters, such as Marion and Mutt, would be in the picture, waiting to see the needs of the elusive story.

Lucas also reaffirmed to milk Star Wars for more profit by converting them to the latest 3-D technology which he said “is very difficult. It exists – it’s just extremely expensive, and so what we’re trying to do is figure out a more practical way of pulling it off.”

He then named Anthony Hamilton as his director for Red Tails, his long-gestating project about World War II Tuskegee Airmen which will shoot in the spring.  No casting has been announced.

Scott Allie Talks ‘Buffy’

Scott Allie Talks ‘Buffy’

Scott Allie, Dark Horse’s editor charged with the Buffyverse, spoke with Fantasy News about his work on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The comic is essentially season eight of the WB/UPN series, continuing the storyline of Buffy Summers and her pals.

“Well, the advantage of the comic is that there’s less interference between Joss and the reader.,” Allie noted. “Less for him to overcome to get his vision across. The advantage of the show is that you have the actors, who the fans love as much or more than they love Joss, and you have the infinitely popular medium of television to deliver the Buffy preview stories. That’s speaking in terms of clear pluses or minuses. The differences, I guess, are extraordinary. Sound and motion exist in one, a near total freedom from the dull constraints of reality in the other. The two artforms have so little in common, it’s hard to move from one to the other. I think the writers who worked on the Buffy show — and I said this before Season Eight — have an incredible capacity to switch over. I said that before Season Eight, because I was doing everything I could to work with those writers, including on other properties. Doug Petrie wrote Star Wars for me, and Jane Espenson wrote The Lone Gunmen, the X-Files spinoff. Because they’re just great visual writers.”

Whedon has written stories but then brought in other writers of his choosing and oversees everything that happens while prepping the February 13 debut of Dollhouse on Fox. “His role as Exec Producer seems to fit,” Allie said. “He did have a hard time finding time to write the end of the Fray arc, but he’s been holding down the fort on supervising the other writers and artists pretty well.”

Allie went on to reveal that Faith and Giles, last seen in Brian Vaughn’s story arc, will be seen in Buffy #24, written by Jim Krueger (Avengers/Invaders).

Elsewhere in the Whedonverse, Allie said, “More Firefly comics are in the works — hopefully two different minis over the next year or so. Dollhouse, we’re still discussing with Joss. And by still discussing, I mean waiting until the time is right. No immediate plans there.”

Bob Larkin gets Career Retrospective Book

Bob Larkin gets Career Retrospective Book

Long before AleX Ross, Bob Larkin became the first major painter to be known for super-hero covers thanks to his work on Marvel’s black & white magazine covers throughout the 1970s.  He was also tapped to paint the Marvel super-heroes when Fireside Press began collecting origins of the heroes.

Since then, he has been a celebrated figure for his work in science fiction, fantasy and comic books. More recently he has done licensing artwork featuring the WWE superstars. His work will be the focus of The Savage Art of Bob Larkin – Volume One, just announced from Sal Q Productions for February 2009 release.

According to a release: “There are innovators who blaze trails to show the way forward, and creative genius Bob Larkin is certainly one of them. His magazine and paperback covers are legendary. From Conan to Star Wars, Doc Savage to The Hulk, there’s little that artist Bob Larkin hasn’t painted during his lengthy career. This full spectrum color retrospective also includes an introduction by Joe Jusko and an afterword by Alex Ross.”

The 64-page volume will be an oversized softcover retailing for $19.95.

Jar Jar is Back in ‘The Clone Wars’

Jar Jar is Back in ‘The Clone Wars’

On tonight’s episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the dreaded Jar Jar Binks makes a return appearance. In “Bombad Jedi”, Jar Jar Binks and C-3PO team up to save Padme Amidala from the evil Viceroy Nute Gunray, which is made more complicated when the Separatists assume that the Gungan is a Jedi.

Catalyst Games Wants WizKids’ Properties

Catalyst Games Wants WizKids’ Properties

ICv2 reports that Catalyst Games has submitted a bid for WizKids’ properties, including HeroClix, the Pirates PocketModel Game, Star Wars PocketModel TCG, BattleTech/MechWarrior, and Shadowrun. Yesterday, former employees announced the formation of Piñata Games in the hopes of acquiring HeroClix.

Catalyst currently has licenses for BattleTech and Shadowrun games which they acquired from WizKids and those games will continue despite WizKids sudden closure.

“Catalyst has demonstrated our ability to manage large and important intellectual properties,” Catalyst majority owner Loren Coleman told the site.  Coleman recently met with Topps execs in New York to discuss the potential acquisition.
