Review: Action Philosophers! The Play

In our era of Existential angst, ain’t it time that we make time to laugh at our messy human selves? If you’re ready for a good dose of some of that and just in time for New York Comic Con this weekend, join the folks at the much-lauded Brick Theater in Williamsburg, Brooklyn with the award-winning Impetuous Theater Group’s production of Crystal Skillman’s [[[Action Philosophers!]]], directed by John Hurley, based upon the comic books of the same name written by Fred Van Lente (married to the playwright) and illustrated by Ryan Dunlavey (reviewed here plus interview with Fred last year). First mounted for the Comic Book Theater Festival in June, this retooled upgrade has 50% new cast.

You’d think that turning a truly comic book into a comedy would be a piece of cake! Wrong-o-roonie! As the dynamic duo of Skillman & Hurley discovered, it’s a challenge. But they kept this Philosophy professor very happy (they could pass my mid-term!). The result: it’s philosophical history a la Monty Python on Crack. Fasten your safety belts and keep your arms in the ride at all times.

South Park Must Die!

South Park Must Die!

The New York-based organization Revolution Muslim helpfully pointed out that South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone insulted their prophet Muhammad and will probably end up like filmmaker Theo Van Gogh.

Mr. Van Gogh was murdered in 2004 for making a movie that was critical of the abuse of Muslim women in some segments of Islamic society. That pretty much meets the standard of a death threat.

Comedy Central’s lovable little rascals did a show last week – the second part airs this Wednesday – wherein every celebrity criticized by South Park threatened to take legal action against the city. Tom Cruise, who was depicted as working at a fudge plant packing product into boxes, said they’d drop the charges if they lined up a meeting with Muhammad. Ever mindful of the censorship they endured the last time they put Muhammad up on their show – let alone what happened to Danish cartoonist Jylands-Posten – the character was depicted with a black “censored” bar over the image until the boys disguised him as a lovable teddy bear. It didn’t work and Cruise unleashed Mecha-Streisand on the town.

For some reason, Revolution Muslim also felt last week’s episode was, to quote CNN, “stupid.”

CNN went on to note that Revolution Muslim supported the anti-West juhad and Osama Bin Laden.

Will Comedy Central air the second part of the story, or will they air a Terrance and Phillip episode instead? Turn in Wednesday!

‘South Park’, the MPAA, and the memo

‘South Park’, the MPAA, and the memo

In honor of South Park‘s new season startig yesterday, we wanted to take the time to show you this memo between co-creator Matt Stone and the MPAA over the release of the movie South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut.

It’s my favorite memo too. Hat tip: Andrew Sullivan

Sequels to ‘Halloween’, ‘Smokin’ Aces’ on Deck

Sequels to ‘Halloween’, ‘Smokin’ Aces’ on Deck

Tyler Mane (Mission: Impossible) will return as the deadly Michael Myers in a sequel to Rob Zombie’s Halloween, itself a remake of John Carpenter’s 1978 classic. Filming will begin in March with the release expected for next Halloween and others from the 2007 cast are expected back.

Smokin’ Aces : Blowback, a sequel to Smokin’ Aces, from director Joe Carnahan, will be a direct-to-DVD production, according to Moviehole. Carnahan’s blog indicates some of the original cast will be back.

Speaking of unnecessary films, Albert S. Ruddy spoke with Cannonball Run Pit Stop about a slew of projects including a remake of Megaforce, perhaps best known as the only other film Persis Khambatta made after Star Trek: The Motion Picture. He claims the South Park team of Matt Parker and Trey Stone have asked him about rights for a remake.

Ruddy wants to remake the celebrity filled disaster Cannonball Ball saying, ”We’d like to do another one, but the rights get very convoluted as you can imagine. Raymond Chow sold his library to 20th-Century Fox for a fortune, so getting a chain of title is a lot more complex than it used to be. If we can work it all out, than we can do another one.” Complete with Burt Reynolds, he promises.

Ruddy says he’s at work with Jet Li on something called Raging Fury, a film not yet listed at IMDb.

Ruddy and Clint Eastwood will reteam for the first time since Million Dollar Baby and make Remembering Mark Twain.  Eastwood is said to be ready to direct the film in 2009 and play the elderly Twain in bookend scenes. “It’s a really sweet, beautiful movie. So that’s what I’m all about!” During Eastwood’s publicity for his current film, Changeling, this has not come up.

‘New Frontier’ Earns Emmy Nomination

‘New Frontier’ Earns Emmy Nomination

The Emmy nominations are here, and the Justice League: The New Frontier animated movie is among the contenders.

The direct-to-DVD adaptation of Darwyn Cooke’s retro comics series is nominated as an animated program at least an hour long.

Competition is all surprisingly nerd-friendly fare: South Park and Family Guy.

Harry Potter goes to South Park

Harry Potter goes to South Park

Deviant Art, a website devoted to the “art and skin community” (i.e. tattoos and other cool stuff) has a post today that combines two of 2007’s most popular fictional locations. Posted by Sam, who seems to be something of a Potterphile (including his favorite Wii game), it contains 45 of J. K. Rowling’s finest.

“This is basically a thing I started when I was bored and it developed, and developed…” says Sam, in case you couldn’t tell.

Besides South Park and Potter, Sam’s a fan of My Chemical Romance, which may be the new geek trifecta.

A Tribute to Bill Mantlo on December 6

A Tribute to Bill Mantlo on December 6

Floating World Comics will host a benefit show for comics writer Bill Mantlo, who suffered severe head trauma when he was struck by a car while rollerblading in 1992. He currently resides in a brain injury rehabilitation nursing home.

Jason Leivian, the owner of Floating World, has asked "hundreds of artists" to donate an illustration of Rom the Spaceknight, a minor Marvel character, toy figure and cult icon that most recently appeared in an episode of South Park. All proceeds from the December 6 show will be delivered to Bill’s brother and caregiver, Mike Mantlo.

The evolution of outrage, by Mike Gold

The evolution of outrage, by Mike Gold

Running Press Book Publishers released a 1,200 page, 15 pound tome called The Completely MAD Don Martin, reprinting all the work Don Martin did for Mad Magazine, back when in the days Mad was a force to be reckoned with.

That means it upset our parents.

That function must necessarily pass from one venue to another. Mad pretty much owned that turf from its inception in 1954 until the mid-60s. It passed on to its own children: the underground cartoonists. They, in turn, begat Matt Groening. Remember when The Simpsons was going to bring down civilization as we knew it – you know, 18 seasons ago? Then Mike Judge and Beavis and Butthead were going to burn your house down. South Park was too obscene for late-night cable teevee. As Kurt Vonnegut (another candidate for this list) famously said: So it goes.

I first encountered Don Martin when I was eight years old: my sister had discovered Mad and I had discovered my sister’s comics stash. Whereas his artistic style was in the spirit of the time, sort of Virgil Partch crossed with Basil Wolverton, his intrinsic bizarreness leapt off the page and attached itself to my obdula oblongata. It shaped my worldview… which probably explains a lot.

The feature was called “The Paper-Pickers” and it was about two sanitation workers picking up scrap in the park. One is a virtuoso of his craft who can spear paper with aplomb. The other is jealous. Why, I don’t know. The virtuoso is doing all the work; the other guy is just taking a walk on a nice summer day. But the competitive spirit prevails, and the also-ran flips out, spears the virtuoso to death and stuffs him in his refuse bag with a smile of evil satisfaction that would frighten Hannibal Lecter after a nice meal.
