The Award-winning author Ray Bradbury will be returning to television with the announcement yesterday of The Bradbury Chronicles, which will be a six hour miniseries based on his works. White Oak Films announced the deal although no network has picked up the project for broadcast.

White Oak’s John Philip Dayton will executive produce with Merrill Capps, Todd Klick, Cory Travalena and Dale Olson doing the actual production chores. Bradbury will be an executive producer with input over stories selected and overseeing the adaptations themselves. Dayton previously partnered with Bradbury on Showtime’s The Ray Bradbury Theater, which ran from 1985-1992.

The author, now 89, remains largely confined to his home given declining health, but continues to write with Summer Morning, Summer Night his most recent work, due out in paperback next June.

Showtime Orders Final Season of ‘The Tudors’

Showtime’s The Tudors has been renewed for a fourth and final season according to Variety. The series’ third season launched just two weeks ago and comes in the wake of the premium channels’ decision not to buy four new series. Showtime did not launch a new series in 2008 and the pressure is on to launch successful projects in order to grow and remain competitive with HBO and Starz.

Jonathan Rhys Myers returns as King Henry VIII for the final ten episodes which will shoot in Dublin starting in June and air next spring. Creator/showrunner Michael Hirst will be writing all the scripts as he has for the previous thirty installments.

The third season opened April 5 and the ratings showed a cumulative audience of 1.3 million once all airings were totaled. The first two seasons, which we positively reviewed, are available on DVD.

Stan Lee to Produce ‘Hero’ for Showtime

Stan Lee will executive produce a television adaptation of Hero for Showtime according to Variety. The novel was written by Perry Moore and was released in 2007, telling the story of an “up-and-coming super-hero who struggles to hide his secret identities.”

Moore is writing the script for the hour long series and will also serve as an executive producer along with Hunter Hill.

Hero joins a growing list of pilots announced by the premium cable network, including yesterday’s Camelot.

Lee last worked in television, producing and hosting two seasons of Who Wants to Be a Superhero? for the Sci Fi Channel.

‘Dexter’ Claims Two More Seasons

If you thought becoming a family man would soften the Bay Harbor Butcher’s resolve, guess again.

The trades have announced that Showtime has picked up Dexter for an additional two seasons. Currently in its third year, Dexter is Showtime’s top-rated drama series. The show averages 2.5 million viewers per week, and is likely to exceed three million viewers when DVR and on-demand numbers roll in.

"I thought at best we would attract a devoted cult audience but soon realized that, ironically, this show is so thematically rich and layered with humanity that audiences of all kinds have flocked to it," says Showtime president of entertainment Robert Greenblatt of Dexter‘s success.

Executive producer Clyde Phillips tells E! Online that he’s elated by the news, especially considering that he and his co-workers were not convinced that this season would enjoy the success of previous years.

"We were concerned because we were creating the show this year out of a whole cloth, whereas the first two years we had Jeff Lindsay’s book," says Phillips. "[In the second season, we] had Dexter in danger, and is he going to get caught … [this] year, we didn’t have any of that. So we’re really proud that we were able to put together a well thought out, well nuanced and exciting storyline for this year."

That’s in no small thanks to the newly arrived Jimmy Smits, who plays Miami Assistant District Attorney Miguel Prado in the new season.

"I have to tell you, when Jimmy and Michael [C. Hall] do a scene, we all go down and watch just because it’s like watching two amazing actors on a stage," says Phillips. "As far as we’re concerned, when we’re sitting in the editing room, those guys are winning Emmys everyday. "

This year, Dexter received five Emmy nominations, including ones for best lead actor (Michael C. Hall) and best drama series. It has won several other awards, including Satellite Awards for Best Drama Series, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actor to David Zayas for his role as Angel Batista.

Dexter‘s fourth season will go into production this spring in Los Angeles. The fourth and fifth seasons will consist of 12 episodes each.

In related television news, ABC has picked up the back nine for Private Practice, assuring a full season.  Maybe Dexter could pay them a visit and put the tortured medics out of their self-involved misery.

‘Exterminators’ Headed to TV

Simon Oliver and Tony Moore’s bug-annihilating comic series The Exterminators appeared to have taken a lethal dose of RAID, with this month’s issue #30 scheduled as the series finale.

But the story, which was originally pitched by Oliver as a TV series, now comes full circle as it will live on in televised form on Showtime. The Hollywood Reporter has the story:

Showtime is reteaming with "Dexter" executive producer Sara Colleton for "Exterminators," a drama project based on the comic by Vertigo/DC Comics.

Created by Simon Oliver and Tony Moore, the comic centers on an ex-con who joins an exterminator company, working with a freakish supporting cast of characters. A mystery surrounding his girlfriend and the manufacturer of an insect poison percolates on the periphery, and the insects are much more dangerous than they seem.

Warning: Spoiler Alert!

Actress Billie Piper does not appear naked in Secret Diary of a Call Girl. Well, a bit here and there, actually. Oh, and if you’re a Doctor Who fan, he’s not in this series.

You may have noticed Showtime is debuting a series tomorrow called Secret Diary of a Call Girl. However, it’s possible that you’ve been staring at the promos so closely, you might have missed the forest for the trees, so to speak. Yes, that is Doctor Who companion Rose Tyler as the author of said secret diary. But now she calls herself Belle. Somewhere else in the time/space continuum, she remains British pop singer-turned-actress Billie Piper.

Due to the kindness of not-so-strangers, I have seen the first seven episodes of this program as originally aired in England. For one thing, Showtime is selling it with lots of shots of Piper shopping. If you think this show is another Sex And The City, you’re wrong. It’ll appeal to straight men. But the fashions are nice.

The show will arouse most guys’ prurient interest. I was going to say “because there’s nudity and sex garments and stuff,” but SATC had that, too. All I can say is, the show will arouse most guys’ prurient interest.

I’ll bet you I just increased Showtime’s ratings.

If, like many of us here at ComicMix, you’re a Doctor Who fan you might find the sexual content of this show disconcerting. If so, please, by all means, get a life. One that actually involves another person.

‘Marvel Universe Online’ – Why They Killed It

That’s weird. We were just talking about Marvel Universe Online a few days ago. The massively multiplayer online role-playing game (think World of Warcraft with Spider-Man and the X-Men) based on Marvel comics superheroes. Joystiq.com writer Christopher Grant got to have dinner recently with Shane Kim, VP of Microsoft Games Studios, and asked him why it was canceled.

Basically, Microsoft owned up to the fact they don’t do MMOs well.

"We don’t have a heritage of MMOs," said Kim. The article went on to list several MMO attempts that Microsoft attempted that failed. "It’s a hits-driven business … it’s all about quality, all about hits."

Given the rumors of confusion on the dev team about what the game was going to be like at a fundamental level, pulling support from the project seems like a no-brainer. That said, I think MUO’s death highlights Microsoft’s sordid history with Massively Multiplayer games.

I think that the fact that we’re still talking about Marvel Universe Online several months after it was officially canceled shows that the concept is still compelling and viable. But there’s no arguing that outside of a few MMO hits, the landscape is littered with flops from many different companies. Remember The Matrix Online or Star Wars Galaxies? Not surprising when you consider it’s a subscription-based business. How many of us just have HBO and consider that good enough instead of also getting Showtime?

I like to imagine, though, that Uatu the Watcher is spying on one of his "What If…?" universes where Marvel Universe Online game out and was more popular then Warcraft. Of course, the game would be populated by a thousand variations of Spider-Man and Wolverine with names like "5piDer-MaN" and "Wolverine Gets High."

“Dark Defender” Dexter nominated for Writers Guild Award

How do you get nominated for a Writers Guild Award? Write a comic book episode, apparently; one that’s a cut above the rest. (Sorry. Should I have gone with "slice of life drama" instead?)

One of the six nominees for this year’s Writers Guild Awards in the Episodic Drama category is "The Dark Defender" episode of Dexter, which reimagines America’s favorite serial killer as a vigilante called, you guessed it, The Dark Defender, because he seems to only be killing other killers, so he’s just a misunderstood vigilante. Like Rorschach. Or Faust. Or John Wayne Ga– well, you get the idea.

Showtime has been doing little bumper videos in the style of the Dark Defender comic book, here’s a taste:

The 60th Writers Guild Awards will be February 9th, strike or no strike. The finale of this season’s Dexter airs tonight on Showtime, and the series is rerun a couple of times a week.
