Superman: Doomsday, the first of Warner Home Video’s new series of original animated movies to be released on DVD, will be abailable on September 18.
Rated PG-13, the D2DVD carries a cast different from Superman: The Animated Series. Adam Baldwin voices Superman, Anne Heche is Lois Lane and James Marsters plays Lex Luthor. Equally important to comics and animation fans, long-time animation producer, sometime comics artist and full-time Jack Kirby fan Bruce Timm is the producer.
Based upon DC’s "The Death of Superman" (which WHV claims to be the best selling graphic novel of all time; the trade paperback omnibus edition will be released tomorrow), Superman: Doomsday contains many extras, including the documentary "The Clash of the Juggernauts," the usual interviews with the animation staff, a preview of the upcoming WHV D2DVD Justice League: The New Frontier.
Superman: Doomsday is listed for sale in this month’s Diamond Previews and will be available (at least for advance order) from your friendly neighborhood comics shop. It retails for $19.98. WHV has (you guessed it) a website with a preview clip.
As reported earlier, the Cannes Film Festival awarded the animated film Persepolis (adapted from Marjane Satrapi’s graphic novel of the same name) the Jury Prize, which it shares with Silent Light by Carlos Reygadas. Here’s a nice photo of all three winners (including Satrapi’s co-director Vincent Paronnaud).

The trailer. A long seen but woefully underappreciated art form. Now, they’re not only getting the recognition they deserve, but they’re becoming the movies they deserve.
First, we have the Golden Trailer awards, being held Thursday in New York (at NYU, no less, indicating what a lot of the Tisch Film School graduates are actually going to be doing with their degrees).
But now we’re talking about an entire movie of trailers. Eli Roth (Hostel) has anounced plas to do an entire movie filled with nothing but trailers for non-existent movies. The film would be called Trailer Trash and, like the segments directed by Edgar Wright and himself for Grindhouse, be fake trailers for fake movies. No main feature. “I want to make a movie like Jackass or Borat or Kentucky Fried Movie that’s just totally ridiculous, absurd and silly”, Roth told Rotten Tomatoes. And theoretically, it might even have– well, plot might be too strong a word, let’s try theme.
He might have a point. For years, ComicMix regular Robert Greenberger has been running his travelling trailer show at conventions, with nothing but trailers for upcoming films, and he’s gotten strong audience reactions every time– the trailers are often better received there than the movies are in theaters.
Even if you have a pretty new computer these days, you might be out of luck when it comes to new diversions.
A brand-new web-only science fiction series called Sanctuary has debuted, and I couldn’t even get the preview to play on my new Macbook without it freezing and reloading four times in two minutes. And that’s with the most updated version of Flash.
And Blizzard has just announced StarCraft II — which also freezes up the machine when we try to play the trailer.
Heck, I can’t even grab any artwork to show you, it’s all Flash and fancy stuff. If you think your machine can take it, you now have the links.
Have I mentioned there are tons of computer users (like my mom) still on dial-up?

That would be your basic second (international) trailer for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
DC Comics has just announced it’s partnered with the comic books section of MySpace to preview the first two issues of its much-anticipated Countdown series, which has reverse numbering because we aren’t confused enough.
The first 10 pages of Countdown #51 will be up on MySpace/comicbooks on May 4, followed on May 11 by the last 12 pages of that issue and the the first 12 pages of issue #50. The final ten pages of Countdown #50 will be on the site on May 18.
Why the sudden interest in the site? Well, DC’s also launching its own DC Nation MySpace page on May 2, so that could have something to do with it.
While it’s always good to see major corporations paying attention to the netroots, let’s hope smaller efforts aren’t completely usurped by the bigger fish.
