Mix May Mayhem 2012 NSFW Webcomics Tournament—Nominate Now!

Mix May Mayhem NSFW Webcomics TournamentThis year’s Mix March Madness Webcomics Tournament was incredibly popular, but we did state at the beginning that we weren’t including comics that can best be put under the heading of “not safe for work”. But there are a lot of good webcomics that fall in that category, and strips like Oglaf, Menage a 3, and I Am Arg! shouldn’t be overlooked just because of some naughty bits here and there.

So we’re opening it up to you. We start with you nominating NSFW webcomics. Later this week, we’ll put your nominees into a voting pool to get the top contenders and then at the start of next week, we’ll reveal the brackets and start the contests!

We do have a few guidelines:

1. No comics on hiatus. Our rule of thumb is “has published an installment since January, and two since the start of 2014”.

2. No comics behind paywalls. We know this will be a big barrier for many adult comics, but we consider it antithetical to the free and open environment of the web… and if we can’t see the material, we can’t be sure it doesn’t run afoul of our third guideline:

3. No obscene or illegal comics. Yes, that means the Miller Test will be applied to the comics.

Oh, and one more thing: please give the title of the comic AND the URL so we can look for ourselves. Nominations will close on Thursday at Noon Eastern Time. Get to it and surprise us!

0811-i-300x450-5231358During a recent in-house editorial discussion here, the notion was floated that we should be showing naked female breasts on this website, as part of an attempt to increase search engine rankings and site traffic.* To address this lack of undress, we’d like to present you with The Outdoor Co-ed Topless Pulp Fiction Appreciation Society, whose slogan is “Making Reading Sexy”. Their raison d’etre:

We’re a group of friends, and friends of friends, and friends of friends of friends, and complete strangers, who love good books and sunny days and enjoying both as nearly in the altogether as the law allows. Happily, in New York City, the law allows toplessness by both men and women. So that’s the way we do our al fresco reading. If you’re in New York and the weather’s good, won’t you join us sometime…?

And yes, you can go to their website, which features many photos of them in Bryant Park and other New York City locales fulfilling their organizational mission. (Of course, the site is probably Not Safe For Work.) They’ve been working their way through a recent contribution from Hard Case Crime who generously supplied them with free copies of some of their latest, including [[[Seduction of the Innocent]]] from our good friend Max Allan Collins. We hope he got a good back cover blurb out of it.

They don’t appear to have gotten around to comics and graphic novels yet, but we’re sure we can find something for them by the time the weather in New York gets nice again. And no, despite what you might think, we’re not going to send them a bunch of mini-comics. We just aren’t cynical enough for Cynicalman.

* Yes, this is what goes on in our workplace when we aren’t figuring out how many dimensions Cynosure intersects with. Arguing about whether Thor is stronger than the Hulk is for newbies.

UPDATE 3 AM, 6/22: Holy cow, a lot of money has come in this round– $65.75 for Oglaf and $500 for Go Get A Roomie! We’ve modified the vote totals accordingly, adding 263 votes to Oglaf and 2000 to GGAR, but there’s still time for your favorite to win, either by voting, getting your friends to vote, or by buying votes with proceeds going to the CBLDF!

At long long LONG last– the Finals of the Mix May Mayhem (well, it’s not May anymore) NSFW Webcomics Tournament!

So far, we’ve raised over $650 for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, and now we’re down to the final two contestants– Go Get A Roomie going head to head against Oglaf!

Sorry it took a while, some of the donations for votes came in without saying who the money was going for, so we wanted to wait until we could come to final totals. So far, we’ve raised over $650 for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund— and we’re down to the final four contestants!

Round 3! Your votes and your donations have narrowed the field down to the Elite Eight contestants (and you raised $323 in this round for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, so we’re up to almost $500 in two weeks) and now the competition really begins to get rough!

You’ve made your nominations of your favorite NSFW Webcomics, and now it’s time to vote. The highest vote getters make it into the tournament, with the biggest getting top seeds. In addition, if you think there are some we’ve missed, nominate them in the comments below. The voting ends Monday at 11:59 PM, and brackets go up on Tuesday! Let’s get it on!

Remember: these comics are considered Not Safe For Work. Take care when you follow the links to the comics. We take no responsibility if you are offended, scandalized, shocked, or disgusted.

UPDATE 3:30 AM, 4/29: Well I did say that if we missed some you should tell us, and lo and behold, we got additional candidates The Demonic Adventures of Angel Witch Pita, The Less Than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal, Artifice, Chester 5000 XYV, and Gregor Comics. Better late than never, but make sure you vote to try and let them catch up.
