First ‘Hulk’ Trailer to Premiere Next Week

This news is not quite as good as actually getting to see the new The Incredible Hulk trailer today. However, at least there’s now an actual date you will see the trailer. According to an official release from Universal, that date is March 12th.

Here’s the pertinant details from that very press release:

The first teaser trailer for hotly anticipated summer superhero epic "The Incredible Hulk" will have its exclusive broadcast debut in a simultaneous "roadblock" on seven networks on Wednesday, March 12. This first opportunity to see material from the motion picture will be aired at approximately 9:56 p.m. EDT/6:56 p.m. PDT on MTV, MTVU, MTV2, VH1, Spike TV, Nick at Nite and CMT.

Not only will you get to see the trailer on all those TV stations, it will be posted on MTV.com afterward. It will also begin showing on March 14th in front of Neil Marshall’s Doomsday — which, in spite of its "borrowing" liberally from Escape from New York and Road Warrior, actually looks kinda cool.

For those of you not familiar with the story of this latest theatrical incarnation of the Hulk, it concerns scientist Bruce Banner (Ed Norton) who desperately searches for a cure to the Gamma radiation that’s poisoned him. On the run and in hiding, he’s pursued by the sinister General Ross (William Hurt) who wants to capture him and exploit the power of the Hulk for his own purposes.

But all bets are off when an even bigger threat appears: the evil and destructive Abomination (Tim Roth). Now, Banner must decide if his own life is worth saving or if he should unleash the Hulk, fight the Abomination, and save the world.

The Incredible Hulk hits theaters on June 13th.

Hip-hop musician Common recently confirmed to MTV that he will be playing the role of Green Lantern John Stewart in the upcoming "Justice League" film.

"It’s a blessing really, to know that I could potentially be this superhero,” he enthused. “Justice League itself is an honor, and Green Lantern is an incredible character to play. It’s a blessing to be associated with it.”

As previously reported, "Justice League" production was initially delayed by the WGA strike, but now could begin again this year. The film is tentaively scheduled for a 2010 release, but nothing is certain at this point.

Actress Carla Gugino, who plays The Silk Spectre (a.k.a. Sally Jupiter) in the film adaptation of the graphic novel Watchmen, had a lot to say about the role in a recent interview with MTV.

I start at 25 years old in the 1940s, and I age to 67 years old with full prosthetics in the 1980s. [Sally] is a larger-than-life character. She’s a costumed crime fighter, but her idea of a costume is very Bettie Page-meets-[Alberto] Vargas.

In the interview, which took place during the recent Screen Actors Guild Awards, Gugino offers up her thoughts on her character’s hairdo, the amount of "ass-kicking" scenes she filmed, and one of the story’s darkest moments: the scene in which her character is raped.

According to Gugino, the film’s title sequence could be one of the most impressive elements of the big-screen adaptation, combining computer-generated effects with live-action shots to create a visual timeline for the troubled superteam.

"It incorporates real history and the fictitious world of Watchmen, and so it’s very cool,” Gugino explained to MTV. “We meet Nixon and all sorts of people.”

Marvel Studios appears to be sowing the seeds for an Avengers film with the latest news regarding this summer’s Incredible Hulk. William Hurt, who portrays General Thaddeus Ross in the film, revealed to MTV that his character will appear in a scene with Iron Man, played by Robert Downey Jr.

Hurt went on to discuss a few other key scenes in the film – including some that the more spoiler-conscious might want to avoid.

"I don’t know how it’ll work," Hurt admitted, saying it was a thrill to appear as General Thaddeus Ross during Downey’s scene. "I know it’s weird [to work with a character from another movie], and to know it’s a device. We did something; I don’t know what that’s going to be like [to watch]."

Lee Falk’s Mandrake The Magician – arguably America’s first costumed comics superhero – is headed to the big screen at last.

No, the Fellini version isn’t being made; Fellini, like Falk, is no longer with us. But director Chuck Russell (The Mask, Scorpion King, Nightmare on Elm Street 3) will be doing one of those reimagining numbers, which probably means King Lothar will not be referring to Mandrake as "master."

More important – certainly more important to my wife and daughter – Mandrake will be played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers, star of Match Point and King Henry VIII in The Tudors. He replaces Criss Angel, whose career was seriously set back when he ditched Britney Spears in her time of need at the recent MTV awards. 

Mandrake The Magician continues to be produced for newspapers, written and drawn by long-time Fred Fredericks, who has been drawing the feature since 1965 and assumed the writing chores after Falk’s death in 1999.

Twenty six years ago this very second, with the launching of a space rocket and a moon landing with a funky flag, MTV launched into the homes of a half million cable subscribers. (For the youngsters in the audience, MTV stood for "Music Television" and they would actually play music videos 24 hours a day.)

Red Mile Entertainment has cut an exclusive worldwide licensing deal to develop and publish video games based on the Sin City graphic novels by Frank Miller. 

“Taking Sin City into the world of video games is very exciting – games offer a whole new way to bring audiences into Sin City,” said Frank Miller. “The Red Mile team has impressed me with its dedication to creating Sin City video games that will remain true to Sin City as I’ve always seen it.”

Red Mile is best known for their “Heroes of the Pacific” game, and are currently working on games based on MTV’s show Jackass. The financial terms of the deal were not announced.

Via Alan Kistler at Monitor Duty, an ugly convention story out on the west coast:

Anime Film Foundation (AnimeFF) was founded as a charity for breast cancer research, specifically the Susan G. Komen Foundation. The group launched the “Tour for the Cure” anime con and stated that all proceeds would be donated to breast cancer research. They recruited several people in the anime community, including those at TheOtaku.com and Richard Stott, founder of the Anime Vegas convention. MTV was ready to video tape part of the convention.

And then things went bad. It turned out that no one signed the contracts for the convention rooms. The convention had to become a single day thing when it had originally been intended to last three days. Several events were canceled. Guests were told that promised accomodations weren’t available.

At the end of the day, AnimeFF representative Jeff Borncamp told the convention center people that the show was over, at which point he allegedly left with all the registration money and dealer deposits. What was supposed to be a charity event appeared to observers to be a "hit and run" scam on not only the anime and gaming communities but on people who thought they were involved in donating money to breast cancer research.

TheOtaku.com has promised to dedicate their resources to bringing all the facts to light and ensuring that this kind of thing never happens again. As far as we know, the Susan G. Komen Foundation was merely having their name taken in vain, and they do good work.
