Mike Mignola Talks Hellboy and Beyond

Hellboy creator Mike Mignola explained his growing separation from the character in comics and on screen during this recent chat with Publisher’s Weekly.

The creator’s ever-changing role on the masthead of many of the stories taking place within the Hellboy universe has certainly become more noticeable over the years. With the big-screen sequel to 2004’s Hellboy feature film scheduled for a July 2008 release, as well as a pair of Hellboy animated films hitting shelves over the last few years, many have credited Mignola’s absence to the needs of caretaking for the character’s multimedia growth.

The real reason, according to Mignola, might be a simple case of wanting to move on to the next thing – in comics, that is.

“After 13 years of doing Hellboy, I love the character, I love doing the covers, I love writing the stories, but I’m kind of looking to do something a little different,” Mignola said.

The articles provides a detailed list of many of the Hellboy-centric comics and other projects you can expect to see in ’08 and beyond, including a definitive reference guide and a project Mignola will be working on that occurs within the Hellboy universe, but lacking Hellboy as a character. Fans of the first two Hellboy animated films will be disappointed, though. Mignola says he doesn’t plan to continue producing the straight-to-DVD features.

Doug Jones on Hellboy 2: The Golden Army

Doug Jones on Hellboy 2: The Golden Army

IFMagazine has an interview with Doug Jones, who played Abe Sapien in the first Hellboy feature film and returns in several roles (including Abe) in the sequel, Hellboy 2: The Golden Army. According to Jones, Abe will have a much more prominent role in The Golden Army, including a larger share of the action scenes.

You’re going to see [Abe] with a gun in his hand firing at things. No sword, but you’ll also see him with no weapon in his hands doing a certain fighting style that Guillermo called ‘the way of the water’ and would be most reminiscent of Capeoira, that Brazilian dancing fighting style that everyone seems at least somewhat familiar with.

Jones goes on to discuss the addition of a love interest for his character, the possibility of a "Director’s Cut," and the influence of Hellboy creator Mike Mignola on the film.

Baltimore comes to the big screen?

Baltimore comes to the big screen?

Variety reports that New Regency has acquired the film rights to the illustrated novel Baltimore, or, The Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire, drawn by Mike Mignola and written by Christopher Golden.

David Goyer, himself no stranger to the world of graphic storytelling, is slated to direct, and Golden and Mignola will be writing the screenplay.

The graphic novel published by Bantam "tells the story of the awakening of supreme evil on Earth. Lord Henry Baltimore is bitten by a demonic vampire bat on a WWI battlefield. The plague destroys his family, and Baltimore creates a team to hunt and fight the Red King, the embodiment of all evil."

Great to see that movies based on comic book properties are continuing to get greenlit, especially those properties not necessarily oriented towards tights and flights.

Starz coming out for NYCC

The New York Comic Con is beginning to look like San Diego East.  Expect lots of stuff that’s comics-related but isn’t necessarily graphic storytelling on paper.

Case in point: ICv2 reports on Starz Home Entertainment’s presence at the con, where they’ll ill screen the second direct-to-DVD Hellboy movie, Hellboy Animated: Blood & Iron, on Saturday morning at 10:30, and sponsor a panel featuring Mike Mignola later in the day.  Starz is also sponsoring a panel featuring Stan Lee at 1 pm on Saturday, where Stan-the-Man will discuss his animated shows that Starz is distributing on DVD.

Personally, I want to meet that lady who does the 30-Second BunniesTheatre toons!
