Kevin Smith to Make Sci-Fi Comedy

Kevin Smith to Make Sci-Fi Comedy

During the promotion for his new film, Zack & Miri Make a Porno, Kevin Smith began talking up a science fiction comedy he had in mind.  In fact, he was riffing for reporters about how it was going to be dark and different for him as a filmmaker.

This morning The Hollywood Reporter runs the story that Smith will do this as his next project after Red State, which he will shoot next spring. He anticipates the film to run in the $45-50 million budget range. The trade says the new feature “will reference other sci-fi movies and revolves around a father-son relationship.”

Smith will produce with View Askew partner Scott Mosier and The Weinstein Company is the most likely studio to handle the project. The trade reports Harvey and Bob Weinstein have already read a draft of the film’s script.

"The moment someone steps out of the spaceship, it’s going to cost a little more," Smith said of the budget, his largest ever.

"All the relationships in the flicks I’ve done have been done before, have been either a guy falling for a girl or two dudes hanging out in a ‘bromantic’ comedy," he said. "I wanted to explore a father and son."

SDCC: Kevin Smith to do Batman miniseries

SDCC: Kevin Smith to do Batman miniseries

From today’s DC Nation panel at San Diego, Kai Connolly and Arthur Tebbel send the news that Kevin "Silent Bob" Smith will be doing a Batman five issue miniseries.

Titled "Cacophony", it features the return of the villian Onomatopoeia from Smith’s run on Green Arrow, as well as Deadshot, Joker, Mr. Zsasz, and will be drawn by Walt Flanagan. Those familiar with Smith’s View Askewniverse will recognize that name as Smith’s longtime friend, actor and character in his film, most notably as Walt Grover the Fanboy.

Noting Smith’s, shall we say, tardiness on certain comics projects, we’ve been told that solicitations won’t happen until scripts are in hand. Nevertheless, the firstissue is expected out in November.

And with Onomatopoeia as the villian, we can safely assume that somewhere in this Batman story, we will have lots of Pow! Biff! and Sock! action. Just when we thought we were done with all of that…

‘Heroes: Origins’ Cancelled

‘Heroes: Origins’ Cancelled

Ben Silverman, the co-chairman of NBC Entertainment, has confirmed that the heavily hyped Heroes spin-off, Heroes: Origins, has officially been scrapped.

The series was originaly supposed to present the origins of characters with super powers, some of which would have been incorporated into the parent show. Top notch writers and directors like Kevin Smith and Eli Roth were attached to the spin-off before it was unceremoniously dumped.

No explanation was given for axing the spin-off, but the poor quality and declining ratings of the second season of Heroes may have been a factor. As for the parent show, it should return for a third season of 20 episodes if all goes well and the Screen Actors Guild doesn’t go on strike this summer.

Strike jitters scotch Heroes: Origins?

Strike jitters scotch Heroes: Origins?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Heroes spin-off , Heroes: Origins, will not be receiving its eight episode run, which was to begin in the summer of 2008. While NBC hasn’t officially said that the series is, ah, eclipsed, producers have not been given a date when it would be put on the schedule. During the network upfronts held last May it was mentioned that Origins would be spelling its older sibling during a late-season hiatus, and that Kevin Smith would be directing the first episode.

The big question: is it because of a pending writer’s strike, or is it because of tanking ratings for Heroes? To which the obvious reply is: Can’t it be both?

Either way, this will be touted as the first casualty of the writers’ strike, which I’m just interpreting as a propaganda stunt to get rabid fanboys ticked off at those mean writers. It’s the same reason that TV Guide runs all those alternate covers of anything remotely science fiction.

Incidentally, the strike jitters is the reason why we haven’t reported on the theoretical deal that Joss Whedon has to develop a new TV show on Fox with Eliza Dushku. Well, that and some other reasons we’re looking into. There are a few shoes waiting to drop…
